Beefeaters (1967)

Podczas pobytu Alexisa Kornera w Danii w 1969 roku zespół zrealizowała drugą płytę "Meet You There", na której w dwóch nagraniach obecny jest właśnie Korner.

Peter Thorup - guitars, vocals, flute
Morten Kjærumsgård - organ, piano
Keith Volkersen - bass
Max Nhuthzhi - drums

A precursor to this band was formed in Copenhagen in early 1964, but their strong orientation towards blues-rock began only with the arrival of Peter Thorup in 1966. In 1967, The Beefeaters played as support band for Jimi Hendrix, John Mayall and Pink Floyd during their concerts in Denmark. Both albums were top-notch "real" blues-rock efforts to file along albums by John Mayall, early Fleetwood Mac and even Cuby & The Blizzards. The first album was, along with Steppeulvene, the most important Danish album of 1967. The Beefeaters weren't entirely blues purists either, they also displayed beat and soul influences. The sound (very well developed for 1967) was largely based on Thorup's talents as vocalist and guitarist, but Kjærumsgård's Farfisa organ (sometimes replaced by piano) obviously augmented the group’s sound. Burnin' Red Ivanhoe was one of many groups who later copied this distinctive organ sound. In 1969, Povl Dissing left the group, which continued for a while longer with Ole Fick (from Burnin' Red Ivanhoe) as their lead singer. The post-Dissing group recorded the soundtrack to "Smil Emil", but no further vinyl output emerged. (from Scented Gardens of the Mind)

After Tea - Jointhouse Blues (1970)

After Tea was founded in 1967 by Hans van Eyck and Polle Eduard, both ex-members of the Tee Set. The group produced three moderate hits in 1967-1968: “Not Just A Flower In Your Hair”, “We Will Be There After Tea” and “Snowflakes on Amsterdam”. The most important composer Hans van Eyck left shortly after the recordings of the first LP, “National Disaster” and subsequently rejoined the Tee Set. Martin Hage was next to leave, replaced firstly by Pierre van der Linden (later to Focus, Trace), and later by Ilja Gort. In 1969, German keyboard player Uly Grun joined the group. That same year, Ray Fenwick departed for a solo career. He later returned to England to rejoin his 60s bandmates the Spencer Davis Group. He was replaced by ex-Baroques guitarist Ferry Lever. In 1971, the group finally split up. However, just four years later, Polle Eduard, Ferry Lever and Ilja Gort reunited once again to record the single, “Mexico”, under the After Tea monicker. Polle Eduard continued his career as songwriter by penning a few for Nico Haak, and subsequently recorded an album of Dutch songs one year later, in 1976. Ilja Gort worked as a producer for Basart.

Hej Hanno (1975)

Tadeusz Wozniak is a very special singer and musican. His famous songs came from the early seventies like "Zagarmistrz swiatla". The second album also was very interesting and... very progressive. Wozniak joined the ballads with progressive and jazz-rock elements. This archive is incomplete (one track is missed)

Phoenix - Mugur De Fluier (1974)

Nicolae Covaci - ghitara solo, fluier , voce, percutie, double-six
Mircea Baniciu - voce, ghitara acustica, percutie
Iosef Kappl - ghitara bass, voce, percutie, vioara, blockflote
Costin Petrescu - baterie , tambal
Valeriu Sepi - percutie

Transsylvania Phoenix or, more commonly, just Phoenix, is one of the most prominent Romanian Rock and Roll bands of the latest decades, and also the first one to take musical inspiration from ancient Romanian folk themes. Formed in the 1960s, it began by doing covers of Beatles songs. However, they soon had to change their style since the Romanian communist regime disliked any form of western culture. The communist regime suggested that all rock oriented bands should look for inspiration within the Romanian culture. These restrictions made the band's leader Nicolae Covaci search within the Romanian folklore, which gave them a unique sound.

Phoenix was launched in the cosmopolitan town of Timişoara in 1962 by a pair of schoolboys: Nicu Covaci and Béla Kamocsa, under the name of Sfinţii (The Saints) (...) In 1965 they had their first big concert in Bucharest. Their performance brought a collaboration with Cornel Chiriac to record some of their songs. (...)

In December 1967 Phoenix had their first major series of concerts in many western cities, capped off by two huge concerts in Timişoara. After winning a few prizes in national students' contests, held at Iaşi the following year, in 1968 they recorded their first EP, Vremuri (Old Times), containing two original songs, Vremuri and Canarul (The Canary), and two covers (Lady Madonna - The Beatles and Friday on my Mind - Easybeats). A second EP would follow one year later, named Floarea stâncilor (The Flower of the Rocks), with all four songs being original compositions. Both albums sport a sound reminiscent of the beat style popular in that era. They then started working on a rock theater play "Omul 36/80" (The Man 36/80) which won several prizes for originality. (...)

Communist officials were not very comfortable with the Western-style music that they were singing, and kept creating them problems. So Phoenix abandoned beat turned to Romanian folklore, pagan rituals, mystic animals and old traditions. In 1970, Phoenix started a collaboration with the Institute of Ethnography and Folklore and the Folklor section of Timişoara University on an ambitious project, a rock poem that combined traditional wooden instruments with modern sounds. The first outcome would be the 1972 LP Cei ce ne-au dat nume (Those Who Gave Us Our Names) - the first LP to be recorded in Romania by a Romanian band. Two years later, Mugur de fluier (Flute Bud) followed. Both albums underwent severe censorship.

Floarea Stincilor (EP) 1969

In 1973 Phoenix represented Romania at the "Golden harp" festival in Bratislava (Slovakia) and then in the "Disc festival" in Sopot (Poland). Also, they wanted to record a new rock-opera, named "Meşterul Manole", but the communist officials censored it all, by "losing" the unique book with costume sketches and lyrics given to them for official approval. The result was only a EP with an extract from the opera, Meşterul Manole, uvertură (Meşterul Manole, uverture) and two older songs, Mamă, Mamă (Mother, Mother) and Te întreb pe tine, soare... (I'm asking you, sun...).

(...) The "Cantafabule" show was first presented in Timişoara in February 1975. The disc was recorded in a very short time and was published the same year with a misspelling in the title: "Cantofabule." What followed were two years of almost continuous concerts but also the creation of the soundtrack for the movie "Nemuritorii".

By this time, the popularity of Phoenix had grown huge; people loved their songs not only for what they were, but also because

they contained thinly-veiled allusions to the Communist regime. The band members, especially Nicu Covaci, found themselves increasingly harassed by the Securitate. Covaci married a Dutch woman and left the country in 1976. He returned in 1977, bringing in relief aid for those struck by the powerful earthquake on March 4. After two grandiose concerts in Constanţa and Tulcea, Covaci surprisingly left the country again, this time with all the band members (except Baniciu) hidden inside their Marshall speakers - a huge undertaking, since in Communist Romania it was extremely difficult to obtain approval to travel abroad, and illegal border crossing was punished with imprisonment.

After arriving in Germany, Phoenix disbanded. Kappl and a few others (Erlend Krauser, Ovidiu Lipan) formed a new band, Madhouse and released a not very successful album named From The East. In 1981, Covaci co-opted Neumann and Lipan and English bassist Tom Buggie, who had an amazing technical playing ability, under the name Transsylvania Phoenix (since a band named Phoenix already existed) and released an LP named Transsylvania, containing two old Phoenix songs translated into English to target the Western audience and five new ones. Covaci together with Kappl also released two EPs and one maxi single as Transsylvania-Phoenix. (from transsylvaniaphoenix.blogspot)

I found this rare albums somewhere in the web. I don't know the ripper. Thank you the Unknown.

3/3 Sanbun No San (1975)

Machine Song

Do takich zespoółów należy znakomity 3/3 Sanbun No San. Zapraszam do posłuchania. SZOK !!!

Reck - guitar, vocals
Higo Hiroshi - bass
Chiko Hige - drums

This reissue proves and disproves in equal measure conventional wisdom about the pre-punk music world. It shows that there was actually compelling, aggressive, underground, alternative music made around the world in the 1970s before the punk explosion. Nearly everyone knows this fact by now. But 3/3 (or, Sanbun No San) also proves that punk’s revolution was an economic revolution as much as, if not more so than, a musical one. The 1970s’ interstices between punk and hippie were filled by marginal weirdos, loners, basement dwellers, artists, and radicals—that is certain. Problem was that there was no way for these people to get their message, such as it was, out to the world. The recent great finds of this era, like Debris’, Simply Saucer, or even the Electric Eels and “I Got A Right”-era Stooges, were and continue to be appreciated retrospectively. At the time, there was no infrastructure in the music world to support what was deemed unmarketable; even less prevalent was the notion that independent releases were an end, not a means. Punk changed all that.

Recorded in 1975, the LP by 3/3 was probably the most legendary Japanese record among punk collectors simply because it barely existed. Rumors persist of fewer than 10 copies ever made. The LP was manufactured as a test pressing with the hopes of generating record-label interest. That didn’t work. Its nods to psych were too late and its patches of raw, straight-forward, aggressive heaviness apparently were either too late for the post-Sabbath trend or too early for punk. Few people had heard this record prior to this reissue, but in recent years, when many English-speaking record collectors began to frequent Tokyo specialty shops, rumors began to spread outside Japan about the pre-Friction band. Supposedly, a CD-R was auctioned on Yahoo Japan, and if true, I believe that CD-R provided the source material for this reissue. (A strange drop-out near the end of the first song is not a pressing defect—it does at least appear in the MP3s I obtained a while back, possibly also sourced from the mythic CD-R.) So, does the LP live up to its legend?

As a piece of proto-punk, this record is everything one demands from that pseudo-genre. To me, the bizarreness of some proto-punk (I’m looking at you, the Midwest) is acceptable if it is the substitute for heaviness and aggression on records that lack those qualities. Luckily, 3/3 is heavy and not weird at all, at least certainly not to anyone who has listened to even the most elementary heavy psych. Some of its songs, with mucho wah-wah, are clearly influenced by Hendrix more than any other artist, and for the most part, the record doesn’t have the slow, riffy heaviness of Sabbath (or Sabbath-like Japanese bands such as Blues Creation or Flower Travellin’ Band). It falls somewhere in the middle, enhanced in my estimation by its stripped-down, live-sounding recording. This recording quality is reminiscent of the other key obscurities in the Japanese proto-punk world that were reissued recently, the two 7”s by Benitokage. Unlike in Benitokage, however, I don’t detect any glam influence in 3/3. Also, relatively speedy tempos abound. Certainly it’s faster than the Pistols! Reck’s singing, present in about half the songs, strikes me as sufficiently proto-punk as well. He doesn’t scream but he doesn’t wail either, and in some places Reck seems to be singing nonsense (or maybe it’s proto-punk scat). It’s unpretentious, which is probably the best way to describe the overall effect of the album. The LP doesn’t exactly hold together as an album because the song order is imperfect, with the best stuff at the end of the A side and beginning of the B side, and the weakest, most Jimi/wah-wankish, and longest song starts the record. But the record fittingly ends with a song called “Let it flow,” which has a definite downer, spaced-out vibe. As a document of a live show or even rehearsal, this record succeeds because it lacks the mediation a more polished recording would introduce.

3/3’s line-up included Higo Hiroshi on bass and Reck on guitar and vocals, whereas in Friction, Reck played bass and sang, and the redoubtable Tsunematsu Masatoshi played the six-string. The drummer remained the same in both bands. A close look at the photos on the back of this LP reveals that it’s Friction depicted, not 3/3, even though the kick-drum appears to have a “3” on the front of it. With Friction’s current crosscultural popularity (amongst both punks and nerdy norms), listeners will surely be attempting to hear hints of Friction’s spare, abrasive, downtown-Manhattan-one-upped-in-Tokyo sound. They’re not there, except insofar as 3/3’s rawness and live-quality recording may have carried over to the punk era. (Lyrically, Friction remained psychedelic as far as I can tell.) Though nothing by 3/3 jumps off the vinyl and grabs you around the throat like “Crazy Dream.” Alas, such is the lot of the punk fan working backwards.

So, is upwards of $40 a fair price for an LP with no information about the band and photos of the wrong band on it? Well, let’s just say, you need this record, and shoplifting from the few independent record stores left isn’t a solution. It’s in my nature, I think, to jump at the chance to own on vinyl music that is otherwise unavailable, especially music made by folks who went on to be in one of the best bands of one of my favorite eras (first-wave Japanese punk). Apparently, others agree, as this LP is one of the first that curmudgeonly Shadoks has pressed twice on vinyl. The first pressing comprises 500 numbered red-vinyl copies, and the second 350 black-vinyl copies. One hopes that Mr. Shadoks is giving some of his profits to Reck and Co., but one has doubts in this regard. (shit-fi.com)

Lot of thanks for this release to Crotchab blog.

July - The Second of July (1967/2005)

July - brytyjska grupa powstała w połowie lat 60-tych jako skifflowa grupa The Playboys brzmieniem przypominająca The Shadows. Zespół ewoluował z czasem jako Tomcats i prezentował bardziej rhytm and bluesowy repertuar. John Field i Tom Duhig założyli grupę Jade Warrior.

Chris Jackson - drums, keyboards
Tom Newman - vocal, guitar, sitar
Allen James - bass
John Fierld - vocal, tabla, conga
Tom Duhig - guitar, organ

July started out in the early '60s as an Ealing-based skiffle act working under the name of the Playboys, and then metamorphosed into an R&B outfit known as the Thoughts and then the Tomcats, through which John "Speedy" Keen passed as a drummer. The final Tomcats lineup, which evolved out of an unrecorded band known as the Second Thoughts, found some success in Spain when they went to play a series of gigs in Madrid in 1966. They returned to England in 1968, the group's lineup consisting of Tony Duhig on guitar, John Field on flute and keyboards, Tom Newman on vocals, Alan Jamesplaying bass, and Chris Jackson on drums, and changed they their name to July. The band lasted barely a year, leaving behind one of the most sought-after LPs of the British psychedelic boom (on the Major Minor label in England, and Epic Records in the U.S. and Canada). Their sound was a mix of trippy, lugubrious psychedelic meanderings, eerie, trippy vignettes ("Dandelion Seeds," "My Clown"), and strange, bright electric-acoustic textured tracks ("Friendly Man"), with some dazzling guitar workouts ({"Crying Is for Writers"}) for good measure, all spiced with some elements of world music, courtesy of Tony Duhig (who has since come to regard July as an embarrassing element in his resume). Their first single, "My Clown" b/w "Dandelion Seeds," has come to be considered a classic piece of psychedelia while the album is just plain collectable, despite some shortcomings. The band separated in 1969, with Duhig moving on to Jade Warrior, Newman becoming a well-respected engineer, with Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells to his credit, and bassist Alan James later working with Cat Stevens and Kevin Coyne, among others. Of the various reissues, Bam-Caruso's 1987 Dandelion Seeds is the most accessible, with Essex's The Second of July consisting of previously unissued recordings from 1967. ~ Bruce Eder & Steven McDonald, All Music Guide

Songs of the Humpback Whales

I wymyśliłem właśnie takie oryginalne rozwiązanie - Songs of the Humpback Whales, czyli Pieśni Humbaków.

Kilka lat temu zespół badaczy z różnych amerykańskich uniwersytetów i instytutów oceanograficznych rozpoczął zakrojone na wielką skalę badania nad komunikacją u waleni.

Płetwale błękitne z północno-zachodniego Pacyfiku śpiewają inaczej niż te w zachodnim Pacyfiku, a jeszcze inaczej brzmią te żyjące w wodach wokół Antarktydy.

Różne populacje mają odmienne kombinacje taktu, barwę dźwięków i wysokości tonów.

Muzyka tych oceanicznych ssaków uspokaja podobno płaczące dzieci, płody, rodzące kobiety i umierających.

(Alice Wignall)

The humpback whale (Megaptera noveangliae) has some of the most spectacular aerial displays of all the large baleen whales. The are often seen breaching, raising their mammoth body high out of the water, then falling on their back into the water. Displacing up to 80,000 pounds of water with a single breach, humpbacks may engage in up to 20 successive breaches. The reasons for this behavior are not clear but it could be to displace parasites, signal to other whales, scratch an itch, or just for fun. In any case, propelling 30-40 tons of body weight out of the water requires a lot of energy and produces a lot of excess body heat.

One distinguishing feature of the humpback whale are their long pectoral fins. Notice in the drawing below, the humpback’s pectoral fins can be up to 1/3 the length of the body, or about 15 feet (total length: 50 feet). These long appendages can be used to dispel excess heat. Blood shunted into vessels in the fin will be warmer than the surrounding water, so heat will be lost to the environment. A similar adaptation is seen in the large ears of elephants.

Feeding behaviors of humpback whales are unique among the large whales, including one method of rounding up fish known as “bubble net feeding”. This feeding strategy involves one whale emitting a circular stream of bubbles from its blowhole to encompass a school of fish. The bubbles act as a net, effectively concentrating the fish into a tight ball. One whale trumpets a high-pitched “feeding call,” and then the whales charge up through the school with their huge jaws wide open to engulf mouthfuls of fish. When they are hunting cooperatively, one whale may use their large, white pectoral flipper to stun or scare the fish into a corner of the bubble net, thereby further condensing the school into a “bite size” morsel! Humpbacks, like most large baleen whales, feed in polar, nutrient rich waters during the summer season. There is, however, a population of humpbacks that feed in the Gulf of the Farallones, where upwelling brings cold water to the surface, causing a massive planktonic bloom.

In the late fall, humpbacks will begin their migration to warmer equatorial waters in Hawaii and Mexico to breed. During the winter months male humpback whales engage in a courtship ritual where they produce sounds with a great variety of notes, and have rhythmic patterns that are repeated again and again. These are the songs of the humpback whales. The singing whales remain motionless in the water for the duration of the song, which can go on for up to 24 consecutive hours. Males in an area all sing the same song, and the song changes during the course of the breeding season. The probable reason for the songs is to attract females! The patterns in the songs include high frequency sounds, which reach females closer in proximity and lower frequency sounds, which travel farther under water. More information about the songs of humpback whales, as well as recordings, can be found on websites listed below.

Humpbacks were one of the first species of cetaceans to be individually identified using a method called “photo identification”. The underside of the flukes of humpback whales have a black and white pattern which is unique to each whale. Individuals can be identified by this pattern, so photographs taken of the flukes as the whale dives can be used for identification. This allows scientists to determine social systems of the whales, and track their migratory patterns.

ks.

Ksiądz Tischner w pełnych humoru filozoficznych felietonach, będących równocześnie arcydziełami stylu i myślowej precyzji nadzwyczaj trafnie przełożył systemy pierwszych filozofów na język i odczuwanie ludzi Podhala (...)

A to wszystko dlatego, bo Stasek Nędza z Pardałówki – dlo niepoznaki zwany Talesem z Miletu - z nudów wynaloz myślenie.

Dzieciństwo i młodość spędził w Łopusznej. Franciszka Jopa. W latach 1955-1957 odbył studia na Wydziale Filozofii Chrześcijańskiej Akademii Teologii Katolickiej w Warszawie, zaś następnie w latach 1957-1959 na Wydziale Historyczno-Filozoficznym Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego. Równocześnie pracował jako wikariusz w parafii św. Mikołaja w Chrzanowie (1957-1959) i w parafii św. Kazimierza w Krakowie (1959-1963). W 1963 obronił doktorat u prof. Romana Ingardena na UJ. Od 1963 roku wykładał filozofię w Wyższym Seminarium Duchownym (później - Papieskim Wydziale Teologicznym, a od 1981 - Papieskiej Akademii Teologicznej) w Krakowie. W 1974 roku habilitował się w Akademii Teologii Katolickiej w Warszawie.

W latach 70. odprawiał w kościele św. Marka Msze święte dla przedszkolaków. Równocześnie pełnił obowiązki duszpasterza krakowskiej inteligencji przy kościele św. Anny.

(...) W ostatnich latach życia ciężko zachorował na raka krtani. Pomimo, iż utracił możliwości mówienia, niemal do ostatniej chwili pisał.
Kie pudziemy z tela, to nos bedzie skoda

Józka Tischnera kochali górole i lubiyły cepry. Pamięć o jego myślach jes je wse zywo. I pytają się ludzie, jak to jest:
no bo góralscy mędrole sprzed wieków
jakiesi dzisiejse nazwiska nosóm
i koło nos się przechodzajóm;
to, cy óni sóm dzisiejsi, cy downi?
He.
Hej. (Ks. Andrzej Orczykowski SChr - katolik.pl)

Archiwa zawierają 4 płyty dołączone do wersji książkowej czytane m.in przez samego Józefa Tischnera.

Joe Byrd And The Field Hippies - The American Metaphysical Circus (1969)

Projekt pod nazwą The Field Hippies, który powstał z inicjatywy Joe Byrda jest oczywiście naturalną konsekwencją i kontynuacją wcześniejszego projektu - The United States of America.

The Elephant At The Door

The American Metaphysical Circus is a landmark psychedelic recording of the late 1960's, largely unparalleled in having remained in print for nearly 20 years. It was recorded by Joseph "Joe" Byrd after his departure from the band The United States Of America, and featured some of the earliest recorded work in rock music utilizing extensive use of synthesizers and vocoder, along with an extended group of West Coast studio musicians he named as Joe Byrd and the Field Hippies.

The album is most noted for "The Sub-Sylvian Litanies" which opened Side A. This three part - suite has been described as "an entire acid trip in 11 minutes". Other album highlights include the similarly-oriented "The Elephant At The Door", and the politically-charged "Invisible Man", written for and aimed squarely at President Lyndon B. Johnson. Two of the more unusual tracks on the record are "Mister Fourth Of July" - a ragtime tune complete with scratchy 78RPM-style effects, and "Leisure World", featuring narration from long-time ABC voice-over and "Ghoulardi" originator Ernie Anderson in an ode to California's first retirement mega-community.

Among the musicians featured on the record are prominent West Coast studio musicians Tom Scott and the late Ted Greene, who is credited with the album's stellar guitar work in one of his few recorded appearances. Meyer Hirsch was a member of the Buddy Rich Big Band and is an experimental composer. Vocalist Victoria Bond has gone on to a prominent career as a classical composer, conductor and vocalist. Fred Selden, a student of Byrd's at UCLA, joined the Don Ellis Orchestra (led by Byrd's partner in the UCLA New Music Workshop), received a Grammy nomination, and later returned to UCLA to receive his PhD.

The extensive use of effects, delays, echoes, backwards vocals and other recording tricks and techniques are reminiscent of some of the experiments and work carried out by George Martin on behalf of The Beatles during their psychedelic phase of the late 1960's, as well as Pink Floyd - Byrd in fact referenced Martin in a 2004 interview.

The United States Of America

The album's cult status was confirmed by its presence in the Columbia Masterworks catalog for an estimated twenty years. Byrd reported in 2002 in an interview published on Salon.com and follow-up in regards to a letter filed in the infamous Napster music copyright case, that despite estimated sales of at least 100,000 units for The American Metaphysical Circus alone, he had never received a penny of royalties for either The United States Of America or The American Metaphysical Circus.

Because "The American Metaphysical Circus" offered a markedly different sound in its intense horn and woodwind arrangements and even more novel content than on the earlier "The United States of America" release, many fans of the earlier record are not as enchanted with the latter, and vice-versa. In the UK, the first United States of America was more well-known and highly regarded, in part because of the inclusion of one track on a popular Columbia sampler album, The Rock Machine Turns You On, which was not released in the United States. In the U.S. the remarkable persistence of "The American Metaphysical Circus" kept it in print for nearly twenty years in the Columbia catalog, whilst "The United States of America" was relegated to cut-out bins shortly after its 1968 release. The fact the United States of America remained largely obscured, as discussed by lead singer Dorothy Moskowitz in a 2003 interview, until a revival driven by English bands including Portishead, Broadcast and Radiohead in the 1990's, speaks to the historical significance of each release in each countryfrom Sony/Columbia/CBS.

It has become a popular and oft-repeated misconception, with the more recent revival of interest in The United States of America, that The American Metaphysical Circus was not as popular or a commercial success, whereas factual information discussed by Byrd surrounding the Napster case and the experience of American record enthusiasts confirms exactly the opposite.

Prior to its re-release, mint vinyl copies of The American Metaphysical Circus were sold by collectors for prices sometimes in excess of $100US, and the both the original 1969 issue and 1996 CD still command premium prices on collector Web sites. Atlantis Records described the 1999 re-release as "sought after 60's American Psych/Electronic rock classic from United States of American mainman Joseph Byrd". Gatefold Records offered "Welcome re-issue of the 1969 followup to the United States of America album (Joe Byrd was the leader of that group). Trippy Moog and electronics noodling mixed with stunning bursts of fuzzed out guitars and acid-damaged lyrics".(wikipedia)

Interesting interview with Joe Byrd.

Thrice Mice (1971)

Wolfgang Buhre - Sax
Werner Von Gosen - Guitar
Wolfram Minnemann - Keyboards
Karl-Heinz Blumenberg - Vocals
Rainer Von Gosen - Bass
Arno Bredehoft - Drums

Early summer 1966, infected with Beatlemania, brothers Rainer and Werner v. Gosen decided to form their own Beat band. Born in Flensburg and raised in Hamburg they attended the Alexander-von-Humboldt grammar school in the suburb of Harburg. Both had previously taken piano lessons. Rainer took up the bass, Werner guitar and schoolmate Arno Bredehöft drums. The trio called themselves Thrice Mice and had ambitions of making it to the top which started well by successfully taking part in many of the "Battle Of The Beat Band" competitions.

In August they beat 6 other bands to win first prize in the Hamburg grammar school Beat-Band-Battle at Hamburg-Alsterdorf School. The newspaper Hamburger Abendblatt used the following headlines to report the event: "Beat Battle Too Loud For Music Teacher" and "Judge Sat Outside". The article from August 24th reported "ear numbing Beat Music, ear numbing applause, 7 Hamburg Beat Bands fought it out in the heat of the moment for the first prize. The Hall was boiling and only one person was left outside - the judge! It was just too loud for the music teacher who should have been a competent jury member, which he in fact was albeit from a distance. He sat on a bench in the gangway in front of the hall and listened from there. After 2 hours of noise the loudness ebbed and he announced the winners - Thrice Mice".

That Thrice Mice didn't even attend the host school and still won was a sign of their talent and ambition. The victory brought them recognition in the already growing Hamburg scene and was followed by the band winning a Beat competition organised by one of Hamburg's largest papers the "Harburger Anzeigen und Nachrichten" (Han). The event with 24 bands battling it out took place in February 1967 at the Friedrich-Ebert-Halle in Harburg in front of an audience of 1,200. Thrice Mice won with nearly half all audience votes cast and one of the jury members from the famous Hamburg Star Club profoundly commented: "I thought that Thrice Mice were best". The event was well received and the music critic Willi Hofmann tried a sociological cultural historical explaination: "… I have to say that the press' approach towards Beat Music is to be applauded. As with all people's movements the power comes from the roots, from the undifferentiated and basic state of awareness. The natural phenomenon of Beat is a huge protest against the fraying of modern Jazz Music, against everything old and rotten and against constraint. It works like the trumpets of Jericho and it is a wonder that the venue was not damaged by the noise.

It is a victory for electricity that can easily be enhanced und undermined by voices, it is ancient magic and new technology, similtaneous ecstasy and monotony. Within the stylistic barriers of few chords and rhythms the bands are set apart by personal effort. The relentless hammering and the brightness can be likened to Pop-Art in painting, a protest against all petty-minded mealy-mouthed behaviour. Without mentioning closeness it is the expression of directness and digression, a real sign of the times but in fact ancient. The youths in the hall consumed the noise with deadly earnest faces".

Whether the fans present saw it this way is questionable. In any case Rainer and Werner found flowers outside their house after the concert, left by young girls as a sign of their adoration. This wasn't the only recognition for their hard work. The prize for winning the Han competition was that the four top placed bands were to appear with a track each on an EP. TThrice Mice decided on a self-penned piece called "An Invitation". The song, whose style could be compared with The Who, gave the band the possibility to work their way to the top professionally. The EP, which is now very rare, was lent to us by Rainer v. Gosen and "An Invitation" is included on this CD. The band's local successes continued and the third v. Gosen brother, Jürgen, was brought in as road manager.

The band took a break in 1968 when Rainer had to join the German Army on national service. Arno Bredehöft joined the Beathovens and left the band for the best part of a year. Gerd Adlung took over the drums and Hans-Hermann Jäger came in on organ. When he had completed his duty Rainer returned to the band together with Arno and the original line-up was together again. It was apparent then that the band had reached its musical limits as a trio and was thus complimented by three experienced musicians with fine pedigrees: Karl-Heinz Blumenberg (vocals, alto saxaphone, percussion, flute, guitar) had played Jazz, Skiffle and Folklore, Wolfgang Buhre (tenor, alto and soprano saxophone, clarinette und percussion) played jazz with Chris Barber, Monty Sunshine and Albert Nicholas, the last new member Wolfram Minnemann (organ, piano, guitar), also from a Jazz back-ground, had played Folklore with members of the legendary City Preachers.

This was the line-up that made their eponymous debut released by Philips in 1971. The members varied musical experience exemplified the importance of bringing all these different musical directions and stylistic perceptions together under one roof.

All the groups songs were developed collectively and after they started with the usual beat and pop music they tried some soul and reached the end of the road. By playing cover versions of international hits the band saw that they were impairing their own compositions. A promotion text from their record companies "Rolling News" summed the situation up nicely: "Thrice Mice's music is based on a medium-heavy rock basis that has many variations whereby the jazz influences are prominent. A classical mood is found in parts of their best song "Vivaldi's Revival", part progressive, part blues. "We don't want to rubber stamp ourselves" say Thrice Mice. "There are groups that you recognise by their rhythm which may have its advantages but it would put us into a corner. Each one of us plays at least two instruments and we are open to everything and feel that we can offer more".

The fruits of that can be heard on the Thrice Mice LP comprising four tracks. First "Vivaldi", the band's hit followed by "Jo Joe" the volatile idiosyncratic philosophy of a contemporary man living his life in the present (translator's note: we didn't understand that in German and it is only fair that you don't either!). The third opus is taken from Joachim Ringelnatz Pate's "Fancy Desire", the story of a deer in the park that turns out to be a sculpture. Last is "Torekov" a track with a peculiar story. Some of the band were camping in Sweden and got to know a pretty Finnish girl who, when she was passionate, would say very strange things in english. Her mutterings were worked into the song as the main text and Torekov was where the camp site was.

The album was recorded in November/December 1970 at the famous Windrose Dumont studios in Hamburg. Before this the band had become well known outside Hamburg and were one of the few German bands to appear at the Easter 1970 Pop and Blues Festival in Hamburg's Ernst Merck Hall in front of 10,000 fans. A live recording of Vivaldi's Revival from this gig can be heard on the CD. Even bigger was their presence at the Fehmarn Festival from the 4th to 9th of September 1970 in front of a crowd of 25,000 which also saw Jimi Hendrix's last live perfomance before his death on the 18th September. Alexis Korner introduced them on stage and according to the record company jargon joined them a few minutes later. Two tracks from this gig are also included as bonus track on the CD.

Thrice Mice hoped that their status as semi-professional band would get better after the first album but in 1972 the band called it a day when Rainer v. Gosen moved to Frankfurt am Main due to work committments. The remaining members tried to keep Thrice Mice alive but eventually decided to break up the band. Werner v. Gosen and Karl-Heinz Blumenberg recorded two albums with Altona before Werner quit the music business. Blumenberg had later success with Leinemann, Wolfgang Buhre is still an active musician, Wolfgang Minnemann emigrated to Portugal and Arno Bredehöft died far too young. (longhairmusic.de)

No To Co - Tchervonaya Ruta (1973 ?)

Grupa Skifflowa No To Co - polski zespół wokalno-instrumentalny, łączący polski folklor z muzyką skifflową. Grupa powstała pod koniec lat 60. XX wieku. Jej założycielem był Piotr Janczerski, ówczesny wokalista zespołu Niebiesko-Czarni. Zespół, jeszcze wtedy bez nazwy, debiutował w grudniu 1967 roku w programie telewizyjnym "Po szóstej".

W ogłoszonym wtedy konkursie, spośród kilku tysięcy nadesłanych propozycji, wybrano nazwę Grupa Skifflowa No To Co. Od stycznia 1968 grupa grupa rozpoczyna występy estradowe na terenie całego kraju, a także koncertowała m.in. we Francji, Kanadzie, USA, RFN, Wielkiej Brytanii i krajach socjalistycznych.

Piotr Janczerski – vocal
Jerzy Krzemiński – vocal, guitar
Jerzy Rybiński – bass, vocal
Jerzy Grunwald – guitar, vocal
Aleksander Kawecki – drums, guitar
Jan Stefanek – violin, sax, piano, vocal
Bogdan Borkowski – guitar, banjo, harmonica, vocal

No To Co was the polish beat band from the sixties. The following album is probably the strangest edition I've ever seen. I didn't find this in any official discography. I found this record in some russina forum but I don't remember where.

To taka kraina, w której każdy muzyk chce nagrywać.

Garwol – gitara i śpiew
Mario– perkusja i głos
Rzepson – basówa i zaśpiewa
Saimon – śpiew i gitara

Sun Dro

Przedstaw genealogię i historie zespołu.

I: Formacja Pivo, z której wywodzi się gitarzysta i wokalista Kości – Gawrol miała swego czasu kilka spektakularnych sukcesów, m.in.

Co my faceci byśmy zrobili bez dziewczyn?

I.: Skąd pomysł umieszczenia coveru Breakoutu?

A dlaczego akurat ten utwór?

– pobrzmiewa u was prepunkowa psychodelia, nieco hipisowskich klimatów, niemiecki krautrock.

S.: A grunge w latach 90.? Dla mnie to istotne wydarzenie muzyczne. Nam wypaliło niezłe dziury w głowach. Przecież to wtedy mieliśmy po 15 lat i wykupowaliśmy wszystkie kasety w sklepach muzycznych. W naszej muzyce jest faktycznie trochę Hendrixa, trochę Zeppelinów, no i trochę grunge`u.

S.: New Rock Revolution?

Totalna wolność i niezależność.

I.: Gdzie i kiedy będzie można Was usłyszeć na żywo?

Kości is psychedelic/stoner band from Wroclaw-Glogow. Their music reminds the raw kind of the flower-power era - music of MC5, Velvet Underground, The Stooges. "Sun Dro" is the second album of the band.

Polanie - Niepokonani

Polanie to moim zdaniem jedna z najciekawszych grup polskiego big beatu.

W jej skład weszli muzycy należący do najstarszych wiekiem (średnia ok 30 lat) i stażem estradowym spośród wykonawców uprawiających w Polsce muzykę rockową:
- Wiesław Bernolak z Czerwono-Czarnych (org, g)
- Włodzimierz Wander z Niebiesko-Czarnych (ts, hca)
- Andrzej Nebeski z Niebiesko-Czarnych (dr)
- Zbigniew Bernolak z Niebiesko-Czarnych (bg)

Poza Nebeskim wszyscy komponowali.

Są tu pozycje z repertuaru The Animals (''I'm Crying''), Raya Charlesa (''Black Jack''), Kinks (''Sunny Afternoon'') i Lovin' Spoonful (''Summer In The City'').

Styl wykonawczy i instrumentacja robią wrażenie epigońskie; w większości kojarzy się z nagraniami brytyjskich zespołów r'n'b z polowy lat .60. Interpretacje wokalne Puławskiego są dość manieryczne. Wszystkie te mankamenty dostrzec też można na małej płytce wydanej równocześnie z LP i zawierającej 2 utwory z repertuaru Artwoods oraz standard ''Georgia On My Mind''.

Original record cover

The band Polanie was one of the famous polish garage bands from sixties. They played very raw rhytm and blues. Unfortunately they released only one record which is now record collector item. Strongly recommended !!!

Wipers - Live in 1984 (1985)

The Wipers, to punk rockowa grupa utworzona w 1977 roku, w Portland, w Stanach Zjednoczonych przez gitarzystę Grega Sage’a. Wydany w 1981 roku, drugi i bez wątpienia najlepszy album zespołu, „Youth Of America” zapewnił Wipersom nieśmiertelne miejsce w panteonie najbardziej niedocenionych wśród najbardziej wpływowych zespołów początku lat osiemdziesiątych.

Misunderstood, mistreated, underrated, and/or just plain unknown, Greg Sage should be mentioned in the first breaths about trailblazing guitarists and U.S. independent music of the '80s and '90s. Since forming his band, Wipers, in Portland, OR, in the late '70s, Sage has been put through the ringer more than enough to justify his hermetic operating methods and attitude. While most of his devout fans consider it a travesty that his name isn't as known as a contemporary like Bob Mould or even an unabashed fan-boy turned legend like Kurt Cobain, Sage would likely retort that it's not for the notoriety that he began making music. Unlike most other musicians who gain inspiration and motivation from watching their favorite stars revel in popularity and idol worship, Sage's inspiration stemmed more from the joy he got from cutting records on his own lathe. He has been more than content to remain in the underground, retaining optimum control over his own career while lending production help and support to younger bands that look to him for his guidance. Throughout his lengthy and prolific career, he has downplayed or shunned any attention or recognition given to him, preferring to let the music speak for itself.

Initialized with the intent of being a recording project and not a band in the truest sense, Sage formed Wipers in 1977 with drummer Sam Henry and bassist Doug Koupal. Sage's original goal was to release 15 records in ten years, free of traditional band aspects like touring and photo shoots. However, he found out early on that being involved with independent labels involved plenty of compromise -- and that independent labels took a great deal of independence away from him, rather than empowering him.

After a debut 7" on Sage's Trap label (an outlet that Sage also used to release a pair of Portland scene compilations), Wipers recorded Is This Real? on a four-track recorder (free of overdubs) in their rehearsal space. Park Avenue Records was willing to release it, but they insisted that Sage and company re-record everything in a professional studio. Despite the relatively polished outcome, Is This Real? remained the group's rawest and most direct outing. It was full of Sage's raging but agile guitars and what would become his trademark songwriting style, dealing with extreme isolation, confusion, and frustration with an agitated sense of melody. 14 years after its release, Sub Pop picked up the record and reissued it without any involvement from Sage.

Prior to the recording of the group's finest moment, 1981's Youth of America, Henry left to join Napalm Beach. Koupal stayed on long enough to play on a couple of the album's songs but left the band to move to Ohio; Brad Davidson moved in to play bass and Brad Naish took over on drums. Having been unimpressed by the professional studio experience, Sage took it upon himself to record and engineer everything by himself. The move paid off, resulting in a furiously spirited but brief LP full of extended passages that allowed Sage to flex his astounding skills on guitar without sounding like a showoff.

For 1982's excellent Over the Edge, the structures of the songs tightened, the pop sensibility hit full stride. As a result, "Romeo" and "Over the Edge" each sustained a fair amount of radio play in the U.S., thanks to a few stations that were developing play lists that would later be identified as alternative or modern rock. Another factor in Wipers' somewhat increased exposure had to do with the better distribution of their new label, Restless. Before Over the Edge's release, Sage fell out with Park Avenue on a number of unresolved issues.

The next studio record, Land of the Lost, didn't appear until 1986. During the lull between studio time, the band toured, Sage released his first solo album (1985's hushed Straight Ahead), and the band released a self-titled live album. Naish left the group in 1985 and was replaced by Steve Plouf. Follow Blind came out in 1987 and The Circle followed in 1988. Aside from some slight production nuances and the occasional dabbling with stylistic curveballs, the three studio albums between 1986 and 1988 more or less swam in the wake of the first three but are far from embarrassments.

A 1989 tour was accompanied with an announcement from Sage that Wipers would be ending. The end result of mounting frustrations with the independent music business and the fact that the band had lost the lease on a studio space they had devoted three years to developing, Sage packed up and headed for Phoenix to remain close to his mother. He left a town that he couldn't get arrested in, let alone reviewed. Plouf came along to Arizona (Davidson married, moved to London, and sporadically played with the Jesus & Mary Chain), and Sage built a fully operational studio in his new hideout. He recorded a second solo record, Sacrifice (For Love), and released it in 1991.

Meanwhile, several alternative rockers became vocal about their admiration for Sage. The most notable was Kurt Cobain, whose band Nirvana covered Wipers songs and asked Sage to open for them on tours. Never wanting to be opportunistic and never wanting to draw attention to himself, Sage politely turned down the offers. Sage would also reason that the timing was never right, as he and Plouf had trouble securing a bassist who would be willing to learn over 100 songs and tour unglamorously to little fanfare. Sage himself was never a fan of touring; trudging through the States to promote records had been nothing but one nightmare after another, he never got a thrill from the attention that comes with being a frontman, and only a couple towns -- specifically Boston and Chicago -- were regularly supportive. Wipers enjoyed most of their touring success in Europe, where they were treated with much more respect and filled theaters holding a couple thousand fans.

With a 1993 tribute record called Fourteen Songs for Greg Sage & the Wipers floating around, the Sup Pop reissue of the first record, and the attendant exposure gained from them, Sage effectively squashed any steam his "career" was gaining by releasing Silver Sail in 1995, a Wipers record that hardly resembled the storming fury that made his back catalog suddenly revered. And then, once the attention waned, Sage and Plouf returned to their '80s aggression with 1996's The Herd. Three years later, the duo unleashed Power in One on Sage's new Zeno label. In 2001, Sage used his own label to release a three-for-one package of Wipers' first three albums. Remastered with plenty of bonus tracks, it's probably one of the most unselfish moves committed by a musician. Electric Medicine, Sage's third solo record, came in 2002. ~ Andy Kellman, All Music Guide.

Chris Thomas King - The Roots (2003)

W wieku 9 Chris Thomas King lat zaczął profesjonalnie grać w klubach muzycznych stolicy stanu Louizjana, Baton Rouge, w klubie prowadzonym przez ojca. Tam spotykał się z takimi legendami muzyki jak Slim Harpo, Silas Hogan, Willie Dixon, Lowell Fulson i Buddy Guy. Magazyn Rolling Stones uznał go już wtedy za spadkobiercę Jimiego Hendrixa i Howlin’ Wolfa.

Niedawno Chris Thomas King zagrał w filmie – wcielił się w rolę Tommy’ego Johnsona w nagrodzonym nagrodami Grammy filmie O Brother Where Art Thou?

Come In My Kitchen

Recorded and released in 2003, the "Year of the Blues," Chris Thomas King's The Roots is a tribute album of originals and covers celebrating Leadbelly, Skip James, Blind Willie Johnson, Tommy Johnson, Son House, and Robert Johnson. With King leaving his hip-hop blues visions in the laboratory, this is a tried and true recording of traditional blues music played mostly on a lone acoustic or National steel guitar. King's performances of tunes like James' "Hard Time Killing Floor" and "Cypress Grove" may feel a little reverential, but only on first listen. King's reads of these tunes are through the eyes of a younger man who grew up with this music as a monolith. This sounds especially true of his performances of Blind Willie Johnson's (whose character he played in Wim Wenders' film Soul of a Man) "Trouble Will Soon Be Over" and Leadbelly's "CC Rider." But these songs, too, are stunning in their ghostly modern incarnations, with King's amazing voice expressing nuances in the music that went unheard in the past.

Hard Time Killing Floor Blues

But it is King's own songs that are the crowning achievements here. "John Law Burned Down the Liquor Sto'," "Watermelon Man," "Dark Clouds," and the closer, "Raining Angels," among others, offer the true weight of the album's importance. These are modern folk-blues songs that sound as timeless and hunted as the music that came from the Delta and migrated later to Chicago. King's no academic; he's a singer with great soul and emotion and he's a writer with a keen sense not only blues history but of soul music phrasing, offering a solidly new chapter in the blues tradition. Highly recommended. --- Thom Jurek, All Music Guide
