Patty Waters - The College Tour (1966)

Patty Waters (born March 40's ; exact place and date unknown) started as a crooner, singing semi-professional in high school. Later on she became a singer with the Jerry Gray Hotel Jazz Band. Her family moved to Denver, and there she started listening to Billie Holliday, Nancy Wilson and Anita O'Day.

During her stay in Los Angeles, she began extensive voice training. Her singing drew attention by people such as Herbie Hancock and especially Miles Davis. Davis helped her annotate her early compositions, and Patty still treasures his handwritten score to her own "Moon, don't come up tonight".

The early sixties saw her arriving in New York, where she made guest appearances with Bill Evans, Charles Mingus and Jaki Byard, among many others. After saxophone player Albert Ayler heard her singing in a club, he brought her to his record label, ESP-Disk. She accompanied herself on piano for side one of her first record, and the Burton Greene Trio accompanied her on the second side. Burton Greene had finished his ESP-Disk just one day before. In Downbeat Burton Green recalls : "I did "Black is the color" with Patty Waters. People still get their blood curled behind that. Patty was like a newspaper. That record put my name on the map ; they knew who I was when I got to Europe."

In 1967, in the Downbeat International Critic's Poll, Patty Waters missed n°1 by one vote, tying Betty Carter for the second spot, also showing in the Talent deserving of wider recognition.
Patty did a second ESP-Disk in 1966,and in 1968 she recorded as a member of the Marzette Watts Ensemble. By the end of the 60's she decided to escape the increasing violence of New York, and resettled in Northern California, where she raised her son (by the late famed drummer Clifford Jarvis). There she earned several college degrees in art, while her son became a championship surfer. In the music world she appeared only sporadically, working with musicians like Steve Swallow and Art Lande.

Suddenly in 1996, she released a jazz album with pianist Jessica Williams, called 'Love Songs'. According to Patty Waters, it's a no rehearsal one take album. This CD with full of standards was well received, but Patty Waters remained the somewhat obscure legend of the two ESP Disks she made in the sixties.

It's hard to put Patty Water's influence on vocal music in perspective, as she didn't record a large body of work like Billie Holliday or even Yoko Ono, who must have heard Patty's live work in New York in the early 60's. Besides, contempory female singers who did carry on recording, like Jeanne Lee only received a relatively small following of connoisseurs. Jazz audiences and critics suffered under a general loss of appreciation for singers in the last thirty years, and not only in the more progressive regions of jazz.

Still in 1966 at the ime Patty Waters album was release, Downbeat recognised her stature as an iconoclast : "Waters seems interested in eliminating some traditional restrictions to vocal performances for the same reason that Ornette Coleman has done away with certain devices for the instrumentalist. During the process, she is opening the way for exciting possibilities".

In 1998, Patty Waters lived on the memories of strong individualists. Singer Diamanda Galas showed her appreciation in an intensive BBC interview and continued : "She pushes, I think, even further than an instrumentalist can push it, because she's got more flexibility with her voice, and she's the only singer I know who was doing that."

The weight of Water's influence can be approximated by Galas'stating that she only listened to Patty Waters twice : "That's all it took for some grain of inextricable influence". Fans of Patty Waters don't necessarily come out of the jazz world. Rock group Teenage Fanclub covered her "Moon, don't come up tonight" and one of their songs is called "Patty Waters". Patti Smith is a known admirer, and Thurton Moore of Sonic Youth once called Patty one of his 'heroes'. Recently Patty took up doing live music again, and she appeared at the 1999 Montery Jazz Festival for two shows, which were received by cheering fans and standing ovations. (Remco Takken)

Shit I found it on some blog but I couldn't remembert it but thanks anyway.

Deltahead (2006)

Edison-Thrash? Silent-Movie-Punk? Punk-Blues-Noir? Sewer Blues? Coughsyrup-Boogie? (info dystrybutora, serpent)

"Deltahead's live act is totally unique. A two piece from Stockholm, Sweden, they both sit at 28" Ludwig bass drums, separated by a radiogram type bass speaker emanating Daliesque horns. Benjamin then plays a stand up bass sitting down and David plays slide guitar, while they both sing and drum simultaneously with radio interference and occasional washboard! Has to be seen to be believed. Punk Blues Noir!"

Absolutely kickass, freaky, punky piece of mindexploting music.

Sun Ra - The Night of the Purple Moon (1970)

One of a rare handful of small group sessions, The Night Of The Purple Moon is one of bandleader Sun Ra's most accessible and enjoyable albums. Similar in scope to side one of Atlantis (Evidence, 1967), Cymbals (Evidence, 1973), New Steps (Horo, 1978) and Other Voices, Other Blues (Horo, 1978); this stripped-down studio session is a unique example of Ra's wide-ranging artistry.

Dominated by the sound of the Rocksichord (or, in Saturnian parlance, Roksichord) Ra plays the newly invented keyboard almost exclusively, adding a pair of mini-Moogs to a few solo pieces. Recorded in 1970 at Variety Recording Studio in New York with three core Arkestra members, the original quartet album is augmented with home recordings from 1964 featuring Ra alone on Wurlitzer electric piano. With the original master tapes damaged, this edition is remastered from pristine vinyl, lending the performances a warm, nostalgic quality.

The funky timbre of the Roksichord engenders the session with an often humorous quality, which Ra embraces with aplomb. The tunes are all short and quirky, blending joyous swing, subtle blues, rollicking funk and raucous abstraction in equal measure.

With electric bassist Stafford James as his primary accomplice, Ra enlists faithful tenor saxophonist John Gilmore to fulfill percussion duties. Gilmore's utilitarian trap set accompaniment is subtle, but effective. Multi-instrumentalist Danny Davis relieves Gilmore on "Impromptu Festival" allowing Gilmore's lyrically muscular tenor to take flight.

Davis alternates between various reeds on half the songs, lending percussive support to the rest. His caterwauling alto sax eruptions on the tumultuous "A Bird's Eye View Of A Man's World" and burbling alto clarinet on "21st Century Romance" are tempered by his mellifluous flute work on the plaintive "The All Of Everything."

The briskly swinging title track and funky "Dance Of The Living Image" are driving ensemble excursions, ripe with Ra's boisterous keyboard antics. A wickedly deconstructed blues motif, "Blue Soul" is just one of a handful of Ra's unaccompanied Roksichord/mini-Moog solo excursions. The bonus cuts feature Ra's overdriven Wurlitzer conjuring hazy Gamelan melodies, with "Wurlitzer and Celeste" invoking an extraterrestrial music box --- Troy Collins, Allaboutjazz

Track listing: Sun-Earth Rock; The All Of Everything; Impromptu Festival; Blue Soul; Narrative; Outside The Time Zone; The Night Of The Purple Moon; A Bird's Eye View Of A Man's World; 21st Century Romance; Dance Of The Living Image; Love In Outer Space; Love In Outer Space (Alternate Take); Wurlitzer and Celeste; Wurlitzer Solo 1; Wurlitzer Solo 2.

Personnel: Sun Ra: Roksichord, mini-Moog (4-6), Wurlitzer electric piano (13-15), Celeste (13); Danny Davis: alto saxophone (1, 8), alto clarinet (9, 11-12), flute (2), bongos (10-12), drums (3); John Gilmore: tenor saxophone (3), drums; Stafford James: electric bass.

Reportaz - W górę rzeki (1988)

W latach 80-tych był jednym z najważniejszych zespołów polskiej awangardy. Potwierdzają to dwie wydane wówczas płyty: „Reportaż” w Polsce oraz ,,Up The River’’ wydana w jednej z najważniejszych firm europejskich tj. Recommended Records z Londynu. Uzupełniają je liczne kasety wydane w Polsce, we Włoszech, Francji i w USA. Pod koniec lat 80. grupa przerwała działalność, aby powrócić do niej w 1999 roku. Początkowo w takim samym składzie, w jakim zakończyła, tzn. jako trio: Andrzej Karpiński (perkusja, instrumenty klawiszowe, śpiew, przedmioty), Paweł Paluch (fagot) i Arnold Dąbrowski (instrumenty klawiszowe, śpiew).

Arnold Dąbrowski - piano, vocals, crank lyre, synth
Paweł Paluch - bassoon, xylophone, b.vocals
Andrzej Karpiński - percussion, speak, objects

Up the River (live), Poznan 1989

Poznan`s Reportaz is one of the most historical and best art-jazz-improv and R.I.O. influenced bands of eastern Europe. Active since 1982, they went through many line up changes around mainman Andrzej Karpiński. "Up the River" recorded in 1988 and appeared originally on extremely limited cassette edition. ReR Megacorp released it later on vinyl. It comprises two long with plethora of diverse ideas tracks, ranging from complex composing to free improvisation. Very strong stuff. The archive contains extra Reportaz tracks from Re Records Quarterly vol.1, 1985.

BLO - Chapter One (1972)

Recorded in Nigeria 1972 .. For the first time BLO comes out with the original gatefold sleeve. This band from Nigeria became very famous among collectors worldwide. Perhaps this is the most sought after album from Africa. The 3 members Berkely JonesLaolu Akintobi and Mike Odumosu created the name BLO from B for Berkely L for Laolu and O for Odumosu. 2 members toured with Ginger Baker in 1972 and BLO supported Osibisa on tour in Nigeria. At that time BLO was voted as the best band in Nigeria.

Chapter One walks the line between rock, funk and psychedelia. Perhaps the most obvious reward in listening to this album is the great guitar work featured prominently throughout the length of the album. At times it is straight forward and driving, yet most of the time it has an "out of this world" psychedelic sound to it. On the instrumental track, "Miss Sagitt", it even sounds Arabic towards the latter half of the track. The bass and drums are fantastic also, but most of the “African beat" was reduced to traces because they were in fact completely absorbed into the heavy rock drive. As for the vocals, they are sparse throughout, and the majority of these tracks would be instrumentals were it not for the occasional vocal outburst. The group would change direction after this album after being pressured by their label to make a more funk dominated record.

Ethnoevolution (2006)

Wandering Festival of Traditional Ukrainian Art.

In spite of that lately the number of various collections has been growing incessantly and it becomes more difficult to surprise the audience with this or that collection, this disc no doubt has its expressive face. Not simply expressive – interesting, friendly, deep, joyous, fresh, eternal... This impression is produced due to two factors. On the one hand, Ukrainian folk songs mainly sound on the disc, at that such that can hardly be called well-known. However, even the three quite authors' songs that sound here – intertwine in the general background quite naturally (and it would be strange if it were different). And on the other hand – that half of the songs are represented in the authentic version, while the second half sounds in modernized, reconsidered variants. Actually, this is really one of many displays of the ethnoevolution – from authentic music to ethno-rock, right? And here it is pleasant to mark that this reconsideration is careful – even in some of its radical displays. The festival is quite young, but the attitude to the world that it conveys – is the right grain, which is unlikely to get lost among the weed. We hope that this disc will become a persuasive argument for the benefit of such thought.

Stypendysta Ministerstwa Kultury w 2002.

Mówił w jednym z wywiadów: "Budowa melodyczna tych utworów wytwarza pewien rodzaj spokoju, pewien rodzaj dystansu do świata". (...) [Sławomir Gołaszewski]

Performer, media artist , composer, musician, visual artist, lecturer. Lives and works in Wroclaw (Poland). Since 1969 he has practiced the life performance The Art of Shoes, The Art of Trousers, The Art of Life of Andrzej Dudek-Dürer (living sculpture) non-stop activity in the places where the author appears.

"Dürer is one of my egos. In the course of self-analysis I was reaching my subsequent egos and I had realised that now there were seven different egos in me. This is like seven slides one on another, and looking through all of them at once you see something different than while watching one after other. These are energies of sorts for me that make me capable of living and creating. That's why my work is not limited to a single area of exploration - it stretches from music through graphic art and photography; I have got involved with practically and contemporary media - up to musical instrument building." (Andrzej Dudek-Dürer interviewed by Marcin Czerwinski: Trans-meeting, Rita Baum issue 5, Spring 2002)

"Art for me is a way, a special possibility of self-realization and cooperation... All My Life Is Art!"

Patti Smith Group - Live in France 1978

Patti Smith (ur. 30 grudnia 1946 roku) - amerykańska punkowa wokalistka i poetka. Zyskała rozgłos swoim debiutanckim albumem Horses. Wniosła do punk rocka feministyczny i intelektualny punkt widzenia.

W 1978 roku nagrała piosenkę Because the Night, którą dostała na taśmie od Bruce'a Springsteena jako odrzut z jego płyty Darkness on the Edge of Town.

12 marca 2007 r. Patti Smith razem z zespołami R.E.M., Van Halen, The Ronettes i Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five została wprowadzona do Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.Występowała w Polsce dwukrotnie: w Warszawie (2002) i w Poznaniu (2007).

Horses

The Stooges may have defined the sound and attitude of punk rock, and the New York Dolls lent it some style, but Patti Smith gave it its substance. Imbued with an all-consuming passion for the verse of Arthur Rimbaud and the grit of early rock ‘n’ roll, Patti combined simplicity and intellect to help forge the most vital and honest musical form of the 20th century.

After humble beginnings in Chicago and chasing her muse to Paris, Patti Smith eventually found her way to the artistic circles of New York in the early ‘70s. Her readings at St. Mark’s Poetry Project lead to performances including musicians like rock historian and guitarist Lenny Kaye and pianist Richard Sohl, who would later comprise her fully fledged rock band and contribute to a series of records that were as aggressive and daring as they were beautiful.

Rock 'n Roll Nigger

This show from March of 1978 was a sort of spiritual homecoming for the woman that had once busked on the streets of the City of Light, immersed in the environs that had created her favorite poems. But the cobbled alleyways needn’t have served as her theatre this time around; the punk scene Patti helped nurture was in full swing and the recent release of the album Easter yielded her highest charting hit, “Because the Night,” co-written by Bruce Springsteen. The band is in top form as the rattle through a brief set, book-ending their palpitating version of Them’s “Gloria” with newer material that is just as transcendent - listen for a room full of raucous French fans chanting, “pah-TEE, pah-TEE!!”

With maybe the exception of hip hop, punk was the last great folk movement in music; if not accessible in sound or subject, then certainly in its practice. These were artists of often limited means or ability coming together to kick and scream because they had to. Music chose them, and the sum was certainly greater than the whole of its parts. Listen to the Patti Smith Group for evidence: this is the sound of the ordinary being made extraordinary.

Rozpoznawalną cechą kapeli jest akustyczne brzmienie i używanie wielu manier wokalnych, m.in. "białego śpiewu". W swoich aranżacjach siedmioosobowa grupa stosuje instrumenty strunowe: dutar i cymbały, smyczkowe - mazanki, skandynawską nyckelharphę i cała gamę tradycyjnych instrumentów dętych. To one w dużej mierze tworzą specyficzny i niepowtarzalny koloryt brzmienia zespołu nadając mu mistyczną aurę.

Robert Brzozowski - kontrabas / doublebass
Piotr Majczyna - śpiew / vocals
Bogdan Bracha - skrzypce, śpiew / violin, vocals

Pacholę

The Saint Nicholas Orchestra (Orkiestra p.w. sw. Mikolaja) came into existence in 1988. Since then the band has focused on everything associated with folklore, especially whatever has been condemned to be forgotten, and yet can inspire and enrich contemporary culture.

The Orchestra gathers together people who would like to experience an adventure in folklore. The beginnings of the Orchestra were connected with hiking in the Polish mountains, which fifty years ago were still inhabited by Lemko and Boyko Ruthenians (eastern Polish Carpathians). The group’s members wandered through abandoned valleys and saw old terraced fields, orchards gone wild and forgotten paths. Who tilled these fields and trod the paths? How did those people live? What made them happy? What made them sad? The musicians tried to answer these questions by performing music that was once played there.

At first, its repertoire embraced mainly Ruthenian songs but now it comprises also music from the Hutsul region (Ukrainian Carpathians) and Poland - at the moment its main inspiration. The instruments played are: the violin, dulcimer, mandolin, mandola, cello, dutar, flutes, bass drum, congas, percussion instruments, guitars - 8 persons.

The Orchestra has played over 200 concerts and took part in 10 TV program. In 1994 the band played at the festival of European Broadcasting Union as the representatives of the Polish radio. Stylistically, the group departs from traditional patterns by applying foreign or non-traditional instruments such a dutar or guitars.

The arrangements are "unplugged" and they incorporate stylistic elements from many musical cultures. The words and melodies are authentic and collected from written and aural archival records.

In Poland, the Saint Nicholas Orchestra’s music is recognized by audiences as strongly transformed folk music, inspired by authentic and original folk sources. Foreign listeners, however, sometimes understand the group’s music as a quite genuine continuation of living folk tradition because it plays acoustic instruments and tries to preserve the folk vitality and liveliness of the original in its arrangements and performances.

The Byrds.

There's a band from Pennsylvania out there named Unknown Mystery 60's Group, and the conceit behind them is that their albums are really lost artifacts from private tapes of a band that played in the 1960s and didn't go anywhere. It's an interesting concept that comes to mind when listening to Coyote, the second album from the Welsh band El Goodo (itself named after the classic Big Star tune) - because if the name wasn't on the disc label, you'd swear you were hearing a lost album from the 60s. (Of course with the trippy cover art, perhaps only the 2009 copyright would give it away.)

El Goodo borrow heavily from many bands of the era (Beach Boys, The Throgs, The Byrds), and right off the bat "Feel So Fine", with its dirty-sounding fuzzbox guitars and reverb-drenched production, takes you right back in time with its Kinksian sound. "Be My Girl" would fit right on Nuggets, while "Aren't You Grand" has a Spaghetti Western sound behind its Merseyside melodies. Elsewhere, the gentle "Don't Worry Marie" could be mistaken for a lost Peter & Gordon track, "Informational Overload" recalls "Pleasant Valley Sunday", the horns of "Talking to the Birds" are straight out of Love, and the jangly "I Can't Make It" is positively Byrdsian. Also of note is "Pete", which features vocals not unlike John Lennon's "captain's voice" in "Yellow Submarine" and a feel that recalls the mid-period Beatles' goofier moments such as "You Know My Name".

Coyote may be retro with a capital "R", but it's done so lovingly and painstakingly that it's also quality with a capital "Q".

Kula Shaker - Live At Birmingham 1997

Muzyka zespołu łączyła nawiązania do rocka psychodelicznego lat 60. (Jimi Hendrix, Grateful Dead), rocka progresywnego i muzyki hinduskiej.

W kwietniu 2006 ukazała się (za pośrednictwem serwisu ITunes EPka The Revenge of the King. W czerwcu 2007 w Japonii, a w sierpniu 2007 w Europie ukazał się trzeci album zespołu, Strangefolk (wikipedia)

Jay Darlington (later Harry Broadbent) - keyboards

Hush

Kula Shaker are an English psychedelic rock band who came to prominence during the Britpop era. They split during 1999 but have now reformed without Jay Darlington and are touring and planning to write a new album during 2006. In September 1995 Kula Shaker were joint winners of the "In The City" contest (along with Placebo), which quickly resulted in a record contract with Columbia Records, who were eager to sign another band that had the multi-platinum, crossover appeal of Oasis. A debut single, 'Tattva (Lucky 13 Mix)' (later re-recorded for their debut album) was released on CD and limited 7" vinyl in March 1996, but it entered just outside the Top 75, at number 86. "Tattva" was followed quickly in April by the band's second single, "Grateful When You're Dead", a slice of Acid Hendrix-esque rock which was to became their debut UK Top 40 single (entering at #35). Music press and public alike finally began to take notice of the band, and this sudden exposure propelled the re-released (and re-recorded) "Tattva" to number 4 in the UK charts. The band's upward climb continued with their third single "Hey Dude", a more traditional rock song which was only kept off the top spot by the Spice Girls when it was released in August.

October saw the release of the band's eagerly awaited debut album K, which became the fastest selling debut since Oasis' Definitely Maybe. The album went on toks002 sell over 850,000 copies in the UK, a further 250,000 copies in the US, and well over a million copies worldwide. The fourth and final single from K was "Govinda", which reached number 7 in the UK charts in December of that year. "Govinda" was sung totally in Sanskrit, and mixed swirling guitars with traditional Indian music. Total sales for all the singles from K came to half a million. 1997 got off to a fine start for the band with four nominations for Brit awards, and they subsequently took home the award for "British Breakthrough Act" at the ceremony in February. In the same month they released what would turn out to be their biggest hit, a cover of Deep Purple's version of "Hush" ( originally by Joe South ) , which peaked at number 2. The song also proved successful in the US, where it was used on the soundtrack to the blockbuster movie "I Know What You Did Last Summer". The song was also placed at number 224 by Virgin Radio, in a poll for the 20th century's greatest songs. In the wake of the single's release, some ill-advised remarks on the traditional mystical properties of Swastikas by Crispian Mills put the band in the firing line of some of the UK press.

Grateful when You're Dead

Despite the negative publicity, the band pressed on regardless with a set of live shows in the summer of that year, most notably being acclaimed by many as the best live act T in the Park had ever seen. This was in addition to headlining the Glastonbury Festival, and performing at the V music festival in England. The focus during the latter part of 1997 moved to the US where both "Tattva" and "Hey Dude" received airplay exposure. "Tattva" became a minor number 10 hit in the Modern Rock Tracks Chart and "Hey Dude" peaked at number 25. K itself peaked at number 11 in the Heatseekers chart and K crept into number 200 in the Billboard charts. An EP, Summer Sun, was released in the US for the band's fans there. The 6 tracks on the EP were all B-sides to earlier UK singles.
