Połączenie charakteru ćwierćtonalnego i wymagającego rytmicznego wyczucia flamenco, atruxos z Galicji i górskiego wołania irrintixis z kraju Basków, jodłowania z Balearów i gwizdania gomero oraz używanie gardłowego, ciemnego, niskiego, ochrypłego, brilliant lub dysonansowego tembru z bogatej tradycji muzycznej Indii, Mongolii, niektórych krajów arabskich, Korei, Chin i Afryki, pozwoliło Mirandzie Fatimie stworzyć niebywałe połączenie tradycji w dialogu z nowoczesnym brzmieniem. (bravefestival)

Fátima  Miranda was born in Salamanca and lives in Madrid. After completing her M.A. in Art History, she specialized in contemporary art, publishing two books in this field.

Since 1979 she is a founding member of the improvisation group Taller de Música Mundana and Flatus Vocis Trío, which is exclusively dedicated to phonetic poetry. She has recorded The paper opera with the former and Grosso Modo with the latter.

Between 1982 and 1989, she has directed the Music Library of the Complutense University of Madrid. In 1985 she received the National Award of Culture and Communication bestowed by the Ministry of Culture for her book La Fonoteca (The Sound Library).

Since 1983, she has been doing research on the voice and vocal music in traditional musics and this has propelled her to use the voice not only for singing and speaking but also as a wind and percussion instrument built into the body. All of the above constitutes the basis for her own integrated musical language.

In 1987-1988 she studied with the japanese singer Yumi Nara and she learnt mongol harmonic singing with Tran Quang Hai.

In 1987 she commenced studies of North Indian Classical Music in Dhrupad style with various members of the eminent Dagar family.

From 1983 to 1993 she studied bel canto with various professors in order to combine vocal techniques traditionnally considered incompatibles.

In 1996, she was awarded the prestigious DAAD grant, being invited by the Berliner Künstlerprogramm des Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst, as artist in residence in the city of Berlin.

During the nineties she has created three concerts-performances for solo voice: Las Voces de la Voz (1991), Concierto en Canto (1995), ArteSonado (2000), each of them edited on CD. In 2005 she has created Cantos Robados, edited on DVD.

Fátima Miranda has collaborated among others with Llorenç Barber, Robert Ashley, Wolf Vostell, Jean-Claude Eloy, Julio Estrada, Bartolomé Ferrando, Pedro Elías, Stefano Scodanibbio, Bertl Mutter, Rachid Koraichi, John Rose, Hans Peter Kuhn, Stéphane Abboud, Werner Durand, Mirella Weingarten and Sacha Waltz.

She has performed as a soloist in numerous international festivals within contemporary, vocal and experimental music circuits as well as those of theatre, sound poetry and performance art.

The System - Thought Control 1980-1983 (1997)

Dosyć unikalne nagrania mało znanej grupy spod znaku Crass.

The System formed in the summer of 1980 having messed around in various other bands since 1978. In 1981 they met a band called FLUX OF PINK INDIANS, who helped them make their first single - the Warfare ep. This was very successful and contained their anthem - the Dogs Of War. By mid 1981 they were touring with FLUX OF PINK INDIANS and the legendary CRASS. They followed up with their second single - the System Is Murder. By this time they were being recognized all over the Uk, Europe and the USA. Soon the album would follow and here it is! Sorry it is a bit late but politics never change. And its as relevant today as it would have been then.

Early 80's anarchopunk bands that sadly broke up after releasing only two classic e.p.'s that musically fall in somewhere between Crass and Flux of Pink Indians. However, it came to light recently that the band had in fact recorded a full length LP and had just never had the opportunity to release it until now-and what an album it is! Picking up right where they left off on their 7"s (which are sadly now in the hands of collectors for the most part), with 12 new studio tracks and two live tracks recorded in 1983, all with the angry anarchopunk lyrics this band wrote so well. The packaging is petty much the original document (with Thatcher, Reagan, etc.) although packaging is up to the expected high Skuld Releases standards. (Dan)" Profane Existence #33

Dead Kennedys - 1978: Demos

Swój debiutancki koncert Dead Kennedys zagrali 19 lipca 1978 roku w Mabuhay Gardens w San Francisco w Kalifornii.

W tym czasie zaczęli regularnie występować w miejscowych klubach. Z powodu prowokującej nazwy, czasami zmuszeni byli grać pod innymi np. Sharks, Creamsicles albo Pink Twinkies.

Kiedy zabrzmiały pierwsze takty California Über Alles, Biafra w typowym dla siebie prowokującym stylu krzyknął: Hold it! We've gotta prove that we're adults now. We're not a punk rock band, we're a new wave band. Wtedy członkowie zespołu wyciągnęli zza pleców czarne krawaty, co w efekcie tworzyło znak dolara $, i zaczęli grać drugą piosenkę Pull My Strings, wyrażającą ostry satyryczny atak na przemysł muzyczny i zawierającą m.in. wers Is my cock big enough, is my brain small enough, for you to make me a star?

Peligro.

W tym czasie zespół dostał propozycje współpracy z dużą firmą Polydor Records. East Bay Ray próbował nakłonić Biafrę do podpisania kontraktu.

EPka In God We Trust, Inc. z 1981 roku z okładką przedstawiającą Jezusa przybitego do krzyża z banknotów i album Plastic Surgery Disasters z 1982 roku pokazały rozwój zespołu na polu muzycznym. W czasie występów w Europie powstał koncertowy album A Skateboard Party.

Wydaniu następnego albumu pt. Frankenchrist w 1985 roku towarzyszył skandal, ponieważ załączono do niego w formie plakatu obraz szwajcarskiego artysty H. R. Gigera "Penis Landscape".

Po rozpadzie zespołu Biafra rozpoczął karierę solową, współpracując z innymi wykonawcami (m.in.

W 2001 roku po wygranym procesie sądowym z J. Biafrą, dotyczącym honorariów i praw do nagrań zespołu, pozostali członkowie grupy zdecydowali wznowić działalność, wokalistę zastąpił Brandon Cruz. W takim składzie zespół zawitał m.in. do Polski (Kraków, 2002). W 2003 wokalistą został Jeff Penalty. Biafra odciął się od reaktywowanego zespołu, określając go jako: the world's greediest karaoke band.

Bunt wobec otaczającej artystów rzeczywistości lat 70. i 80. W prowokacyjny i szyderczy sposób prezentuje on istniejący system polityczny, cyniczność i głupotę establishmentu, prawicowy fundamentalizm religijny, wyśmiewa ogłupienie amerykańskiego społeczeństwa kulturą masową, konsumpcjonizmem, różnego rodzaju modami, snobizmem, także w kulturze.

Jello Biafra - wokal
East Bay Ray - gitara
Klaus Flouride - gitara basowa, wokale
6025 - perkusja

Bootleg 1978 Demos został nagrany w czerwcu 1978 w San Francisco roku podczas prób zespołu. Są to pierwsze nagrania jakich zespół dokonał.

The 1978 Demos were the first demos by the Dead Kennedys. They were recorded in late June 1978. "Kepone Kids" would later become "Kepone Factory". "Kidnap", "Dreadlocks of the Suburbs", "Mutations of Today", and "Cold Fish" remain officially unreleased by the DKs.

During 1978 the band wrote and recorded several songs; these have entered the bootleg market in numerous different selections. On his website Klaus Flouride has stated some of the recorded tracks were never meant to be demos at all, but were rather "explorations that never got finished". Guitarist East Bay Ray has also mentioned "they were more like sketches of songs". To date it's unknown how many songs the band recorded, but the following tracks have been verified.

Frank Zappa - Hot Rats Show in Los Angeles 1970

FRANK ZAPPA & HOT RATS
OLYMPIC AUDITORIUM, LOS ANGELES,CA.,USA MARCH 7, 1970

Frank Zappa - Electric Guitar, Vocals
Max Bennett - Electric Bass
Don "Sugarcane" Harris - Electric Violin, Vocals
Ian Underwood - Keyboards, Alto Saxophone
Aynsley Dunbar - Drums

It is not the prettiest recording (see John Naurin's notes below) but it is almost complete (a couple small cuts) unlike the old LP boot "Frank Zappa & Hot Rats At The Olympic". It is also a very rare recording. There are only 2 known recordings of this band. This and 02-28-70 San Diego. And this is the better one.

SHARLEENA (9:31)- This premiere performance of this eventual guitar solo classic appears essentially as it would on "Lost Episodes". This version, or at least this recording of this version, has a harder guitar edge, but nevertheless bounces along at the same frantic pace. Harris and Frank both take solos, with Frank contributing some heavy rhythm support during Harris' violin workout and during a short full-band jam in the midst of these solos. Harris takes the longer of the two solos, though Frank's wah-wah tinged effort still satisfies. This is a worthy performance, and just as enjoyable as the revelatory "lost episode".

TWINKLE TITS/INTERLUDE (9:57)- This one-time only performance- a waltz!- resembles a light-hearted version of "Little House I Used To Live In". While actual pieces of "Little House" are found in this extended instrumental, new pieces of music are found in the opening theme. After the short intro, Frank takes a one minute solo, after which the song begins toying with the borrowed themes as noted above. Approximately two and a half minutes into the song, we enter the solo zone, with Harris, Underwood, and the rhythm section getting an opportunity to display their chops. Again, Frank's rhythm work is awesome throughout (this is the great fault of FZ shows from the mid-70's on-> no Frank playing rhythm). Frank eventually takes a second solo, during which there is an interesting cut in the tape. At 7:29 into the song, the tape edits out of the solo into a composed piece of music known as "Interlude", previously performed by the '60's Mothers. This tune is reminiscent of "Little House" but is an entirely new piece of music. After the cut, the remaining portion of this track consists of "Interlude", without returning to the "Twinkle Tits" theme. While these are definitely two different tracks, it is possible that they were joined together here as a medley. [David Lynch, who helped with info on this track, writes: "The coda was performed by the '69 Mothers under the title "Interlude". I have two separate '69 recordings of this piece, which is more or less complete on the Hot Rats recording. That having been said, they may still have been performed together during this concert, as the Hot Rats were wont to run together tunes in medleys, and Zappa mentions the Hot Rats band knowing "three tunes, maybe five" at the beginning of this concert."]

DIRECTLY FROM MY HEART TO YOU (5:40)- Without a doubt, the greatest cover song Frank ever performed. There is honest emotion in this piece (a Frank rarity!), thanks to some impassioned playing and singing by the why-couldn't-he-have-stayed-around-longer Harris. This is essentially performed as on "Weasels Ripped My Flesh", with an intensity that only comes with performing live. Excellent.

CHUNGA'S REVENGE (24:12)- In seven days, Frank took a mangled piece of music known as "Bolero in G" and transformed it into the instrumental powerhouse known as "Chunga's Revenge". This performance is as powerful as always, with the strong opening theme, followed by a series of equally strong solos. Frank extends this early performance beyond its solo-vehicle expectancy, and churns out some thoroughly exciting and spine- tingling music. The first series of solos runs about 13 minutes, containing an Underwood saxophone solo, a Harris keyboard solo, and a jazzy, melodical Frank solo. These solos are all great, and made even more so by Bennet's ever-shifting bass lines, and Dunbar's thunderous drumming. After the obligatory drum solo, Bennet returns to the "Chunga's" theme with a slow, death march take on the main riff. Frank abruptly enters the scene, with a full-blown psychedelic mangling of the theme. The bass player continues with his methodical plodding, leading the jam with a slow, walking bass line, gradually building in intensity thanks to the impetus of Frank's rhythm. Over this, Harris whips out the violin solo of his life, producing musical blasphemy for four exhausting minutes. The sounds Sugarcane wrangles out of his violin must be heard to be believed. The whole band eventually coalesces back into one, before Frank takes off for yet another solo, exploring the stratosphere for three more minutes. Finally, 24 minutes after the insanity began, the music stops, and everyone scrambles to find their minds. Heaven.

WILLIE THE PIMP- Unfortunately, my tape of the 3/7 show does not contain this song; thus, Charles Ulrich will describe this for you-> "My copy of 3/7/70 has "Willie The Pimp" after "Chunga's Revenge". There is no edit between the songs. FZ introduces the song as "Willie The Pimp", regrets that Beefheart isn't there to sing it, and recites some of the lyrics. Sugar Cane Harris plays violin on it. There's a guitar solo, an organ solo, a bass solo, then an edit to the ending. The whole thing is about twelve minutes long (plus whatever has been edited out, of course)." David Lynch adds: "I have a tape of the March 7 show that DOES include Willie the Pimp. It's an instrumental run-through of the tune, comparable in quality to the rest of the recordings of this band, that lasts 11 and a half minutes- after the opening theme, Frank lets loose with a 2 1/2 minute solo, followed by a 2 minute 21 second violin solo, followed by a three minute keyboard solo, followed by a bass solo that lasts for 1 minute 21 seconds before there's a splice to the closing theme. The "Willie the Pimp" vamp is heard prominently throughout the performance."

Robert Wyatt & Friends - Theatre Royal Drury Lane 1974 (2005)

W pierwszej – wystąpił Ivor Cutler i Phyllis April King "z wyborem piosenek i wierszy".

Muzycy stanowili czołówkę ówczesnej sceny rocka progresywnego, muzyki eksperymentalnej, rocka awangardowego, jazz rocka i free jazzu.

(wikipedia)

One of the chief complaints about prog rock is that it stifles the playful energy of rock 'n' roll in favor of an emphasis on instrumental virtuosity and compositional sophistication. The fact that words like "compositional sophistication" can even be used in reference to prog rock is probably reason enough to think that the music's enemies may have a point.

While the music of bands like Yes, ELP, and King Crimson can be invigorating and exciting, there's a level of raw emotionality that often gets lost in the maze of tricky rhythms and endless solos. It wouldn't be much of a stretch to say that Robert Wyatt's music falls within the prog camp. His compositions are long and complex, he lets his soloists go on for minutes at a time, and his rhythms are just about undanceable. But as the newly released live album Theatre Royal Drury Lane ably demonstrates, Wyatt's music has a beguiling innocence and emotionality that is rare in any kind of pop music and almost non-existent in prog.

The album (recorded in 1974 but unreleased until now) finds Wyatt at the peak of his powers, as he leads his friends from the English prog scene (including Pink Floyd drummer Nick Mason and guitar wizards Fred Frith and Mike Oldfield) through his roiling, careening music. That Wyatt was so in control of his musical power is sadly ironic, as the concert the music is taken from marked a major step in his return to music after a 1971 accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Maybe it took that kind of trauma for Wyatt to create music as rich and rewarding as what's on Theatre, but whether or not that's true, the album stands as a high point for listeners looking to explore the musical and emotional possibilities of rock.

Wyatt's ability to blend heartfelt, almost childish sentiment with aggressively challenging music is evident throughout the album. Whether it's his vocal on "Memories", where he improvises an angular, leaping melody with the unpredictable and unrestrained joy of someone discovering his voice for the first time, or the lyrics of "Signed Curtain", which are mostly a description of the parts of the song ('this is the first verse, this is the chorus', etc), Wyatt never lets the muso virtuosity of his supporting musicians overwhelm his own playful fascination with the music. On the aforementioned 'Signed Curtain', Mike Oldfield unleashes a long spiraling solo that might seem self-indulgent in a different setting, but is saved by the fact that Wyatt's own lack of pretension created a musical atmosphere of altruism rather than the selfishness — a problem of too much prog.

The set is dominated by songs from Rock Bottom, Wyatt's first post-accident album, and the performances match, if not better, their studio versions. "Little Red Riding Hood Hits the Road" provides a Miles/Fusion groove capable of accommodating both Wyatt's own scatting and a thrillingly knotty Hugh Hopper trumpet solo. "Sea Song", a clear-eyed look at the effect of Wyatt's paralysis on his marriage, rises on waves of frantic drumming and sinister synth lines and falls on watery electric piano and Wyatt's warm vocal.

The non-"Rock Bottom" maintain the high level of the rest of the album. Julie Tippetts delivers a crystalline, folky vocal on the stirring "Mind of A Child", and the concluding "I'm A Believer" (a shorter version of which provided Wyatt a small hit in England) extends The Monkees' pop anthem into a rousing, horn-driven seven-and-a-half minute epic, complete with multiple solos, cool tempo shifts, and a circus-music interlude.

More sensitive and compassionate than most prog, and more musically challenging than most pop, Wyatt's music occupies a unique space in the musical landscape. There's simply no one else doing what he did. As Wyatt is a reluctant live performer, Theatre offers the valuable opportunity to hear his music in a non-studio setting. The album is both a welcome addition to Wyatt's catalogue and an indispensable document for anyone interested in that rare breed of musician who is forever alive to the possibility of new opportunities and forever blind to the existence of obstacles. Faust - Od serca do duszy (2007)

This double live album documents the group's first foray into Polish territory. The sound quality is vastly superior to last year's In Autumn box set of live recordings. Each little noise right up to the mightiest clamour is captured quite clearly; it is almost possible to smell the sweat.

Faust open with a new song called "Sex," an improvisation leading on from a recording of a man speaking about sex in German (referring to the act, not the number). This piece sets a high standard for the rest of the album, the raw power of the band is like a truck hurtling out of control and heading straight for where I am sitting. "We Are Not Here…" raises the bar again in terms of sheer brute musical beauty. Although I unfortunately must experience Faust live only through these second hand experiences, on Od Serca Do Duszy it is possible to feel the danger and excitement that the group are renowned for.

It is not all flexing muscles and battering sheet metal into smithereens; the gorgeous "Our Soul to Your Ears" provides a welcome breather amidst the raucous din. Here Jean-Hervé Péron urges the crowd to shut up and (amazingly!) they do. The band then use this almost blank canvas to sketch out a delicate piece of music that proves that they are not just living off the glory days of their youth. This is only the eye in the storm as the peace quickly gives way to "Ist Rund Schoen?" I have never been big on this song in any of its previous incarnations but Poland must have brought something great out in Faust as it is a cracker here.

The second disc sees Faust in improv mode, half of this disc is given up to two wild tracks of jamming. "Impro: Krakow I" is the kind of song that would make Acid Mothers Temple extremely jealous. An encore of their signature tune ("Rainy Day Sunshine Girl") is the icing on an already sweet cake. It is as vivid an image of an instant in time as one could hope for. Indeed, as live albums go (and live Faust recordings for that matter), Od Serca Do Duszy is a decent stab at capturing a band in the moment. (John Kealy)

Julie Driscoll - 1969 (1971)

Julie Driscoll (ur. 8 czerwca 1947 w Londynie) – aktorka i wokalistka rockowa kojarzona z subkulturą modsów. Znana dzięki przebojowym wykonaniom "'This Wheel's on Fire" Boba Dylana, "Season of the Witch" Donovana i "Light My Fire" The Doors. Wraz z Brianem Augerem założyła zespół Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger & The Trinity.

W kwietniu 1965 r. organista Brian Auger zakończył działalność swojego kwartetu Brian Auger & the Trinity i miesiąc później założył grupę Steampacked. Muzykami byli członkowie poprzedniego zespołu a uzupełniała ich trójka młodych, świetnie zapowiadających się wokalistów: Julie Driscoll, Rod Stewart i Long John Baldry. Gdy w kwietniu 1966 r. Rod Stewart odszedł do zespołu Shotgun Express, grupa Steampacked kontynuowała działalność do września 1966 r.

We wrześniu 1966 r. Brian Auger i Julie Driscoll reaktywowali The Trinity, tym razem jako Julie Driscol, Brian Auger & the Trinity. Long John Baldry założył grupę Bluesology.

Julie Driscoll, Brian Auger & the Trinity wydali kilka singli, które cieszyły się sporym powodzeniem, a prawdziwą sławę przyniósła im ich wersja "This Wheel's on Fire" (autorstwa Boba Dylana i Ricka Danko). W 1967 r. ukazał się pierwszy album zespołu Open. Julie Driscoll stała się najpopularniejszą piosenkarką i najmodniejszą osobą Wielkiej Brytanii. Jej intrygująca i niebanalna uroda spowodowała, że zaczęto w stosunku do niej używać określenia Twarz (ang. The Face).

W Dartington International Summer School, Welsh College of Music and Drama uczy m.in. wokalnych umiejętności improwizatorskich.

Julie Driscoll - vocal, acoustic guitar
Brian Godding - electric guitar, vocal
Chris Spedding - electric guitar, bass
Keith Tippett - piano, celeste, arrangements
Jeff Clyne - bass
Trevor Tompkins - drums
Elton Dean - alto sax
Nick Evans - trombone
Derek Wadsworth - trombone
Mark Charig - cornet
Karl Jenkins - oboe
Bud Parkes - trumpet
Stan Saltzman - alto sax
Barry Reeves - drums
Bob Downes - flute

Sixties pop diva-turned-avant jazz singer Julie Driscoll was born June 8, 1947 in London. As a teen she oversaw the Yardbirds' fan club, and it was the group's manager and producer Giorgio Gomelsky who encouraged her to begin a performing career of her own. In 1963 she issued her debut pop single "Take Me by the Hand," two years later joining the short-lived R&B combo Steampacket alongside Rod Stewart, Long John Baldry and organist Brian Auger. After Steampacket dissolved, Driscoll signed on with the Brian Auger Trinity, scoring a Top Five UK hit in 1968 with their rendition of Bob Dylan's "This Wheel's on Fire." Dubbed "The Face" by the British music press, Driscoll's striking looks and coolly sophisticated vocals earned her flavor of the month status, and she soon left Auger for a solo career. Her debut solo album 1969 heralded a significant shift away from pop, however, enlisting members of the Soft Machine and Blossom Toes to pursue a progressive jazz direction. Also contributing to the record was pianist Keith Tippett, whose avant garde ensembles Centipede and Ovary Lodge Driscoll soon joined. She and Tippett were later married, and she took her new husband's name, also recording as Julie Tippetts. With her 1974 solo masterpiece Sunset Glow, she further explored improvisational vocal techniques in settings ranging from folk to free jazz. Two years later, Tippett joined with Maggie Nicols, Phil Minton and Brian Ely to form the experimental vocal quartet Voice, and in 1978 also collaborated with Nicols on the duo album Sweet and s'Ours. A decade later, she and Keith released Couple in Spirit, and in 1991 Tippett teamed with over a dozen instrumentalists from Britain and the former Soviet Georgia in the Mujician/Georgian Ensemble. The following year, she re-recorded "This Wheel's on Fire" as the theme to the smash BBC comedy Absolutely Fabulous. (Jason Ankeny, AllMusic)

Sun Ra - The Paris Tapes (1971)

Surprisingly, this remarkable and magnificently captured performance has never been issued on LP or CD before. Sun Ra and his larger than usual Arkestra are caught live here – dancers and all – sometime during 1971 at the Théâter du Châtelet in Paris, France for what is surely one of the Arkestra's finest concert happenings – particularly during this period.

While Ra's Arkestra was recorded live several times during 1971, the personnel and the instrumentation presented here are closest to a October 14, 1971, performance that was captured in Helsinki, Finland and issued on a CD/DVD I have not heard called Helsinki 1971 – The Complete Concert & Interview (Transparency, 2009). So it's a reasonable guess that The Paris Tapes were probably made around the same time, even though the Helsinki disc dubs the Arkestra as "Sun Ra and His Intergalactic Solar Research Arkestra" while the Paris disc credits "Sun Ra and His Mythic Science Arkestra." (Notes writer Chris Trent indicates that the Paris concert came six weeks after the Helsinki concert, but that's probably not right.)

What is here is simply stunning. Ra's El Saturn Records must have had some intention of issuing this exceptional performance, or parts of it, at one time or another because the sound is stunningly well realized. The presumption is that someone in the Arkestra's camp recorded the concert. It surely doesn't sound like a bootleg. Someone recorded this music quite beautifully, stored it especially well and somehow, some four decades later, we can now hear what must have amazed that Parisian audience in 1971.

Here, London's Art Yard label collaborates beautifully with Amsterdam's Kindred Spirits to issue The Paris Tapes, a spectacular addition to the already massive Sun Ra discography. The Kindred Spirits LP features two Arkestra standards from the concert, "Space Is the Place" and "Watusi" and the rather too repetitive and dull Latin-based "Somebody Else's Idea" (an extremely obscure Ra number featuring June Tyson's lead vocal). The Art Yard CD presents the full two-hour and twenty-minute concert over two discs, jam-packed with some of the Arkestra's most compellingly captured and lively music.

Live in Paris is the Arkestra at its most percussive. From the very first notes of the generically titled "Introduction," we're on another aural plane of Ra's multi-visional musical multiverse. As Dusty Groove aptly notes, the effect is more spiritual than avant garde. Perhaps liner notes writer Knoel Scott's one-track script, which proposes among other things, that "Introduction" is the musical soundtrack to racial savaging, is one way to experience Ra's unique musical achievement here. I don't hear it that way at all and I don't believe it was formed or fashioned with that in mind. The pervasive percussion and spacey sounds probably had more to do with Ra's sci-fi positivity: lift yourself up and you can go to outer space.

There are three drummers credited here (Clifford Jarvis, Lex Humphries and Tommy Hunter) and percussionist Nimrod Hunter and nearly everyone else in the Arkestra doubles up on percussion when they're not doing their thing. Over nearly two and a half hours, the percussive force neither wanes nor wavers. It becomes hypnotically more compelling, grounding even the freest exchanges of Arkestra soloists in a rhythmic orgy that will make sense to jazz listeners who have trouble accepting or understanding music that goes somewhere out there ("Discipline 27," "Discipline Number Unknown")

A strong rock sensibility is present here as well that isn't as obvious elsewhere in Ra's music. It's as if Sun Ra – like Miles Davis – took in Jimi Hendrix, the Grateful Dead and Santana and worked their thing into his own (The Paris Tapes even suggest that Miles Davis was listening closely to what Sun Ra was doing too). Part of that comes out of Ra's helming of the organ and Farfisa keyboard (to wit, the exciting two-part "Love in Outer Space" and the second of the two untitled pieces). But he's played those instruments elsewhere and the effect was not quite like this. Perhaps it's the combination of Ra's electric eclectics and the powerful surge of percussion that make The Paris Tapes feel like the Arkestra's "rock" album.

The entire concert is invigorating from start to finish, but there are several highlights that make The Paris Tapes an essential Arkestra listening experience. The tremendously performed "Third Planet," which the Arkestra also performed at the 1971 Cairo concert captured on Horizon (a Saturn LP also issued on CD by Art Yard), is one of Ra's best and, amazingly, very little known. As a composition, it harks back to the classics of Jazz in Silhouette and Supersonic Jazz. As a performance, it is a reminder of the section work this group was always capable of and, more importantly, the terrifically proficient soloing each and every one of these guys could do – particularly within the stratosphere.

"Watusi," a Ra favorite first heard on the 1970 Fondation Maeght Nights set as well as on the Helsinki and Cairo concert recordings, is an amazing percussion workout that – surprisingly – never gets tired or stale over its mind boggling 23-minute performance. This makes you wonder whether a DVD of this concert, like the Helsinki performance, wasn't somehow available. No doubt this would have been spectacular to watch. It makes for quite a listen as well.

Finally, there is the unusually and unapologetic African variation of "Angels and Demons at Play," where a lone flute floats magnificently for much of the time above layers of dense percussion that tells the story of the song's title better than nearly all of the variations ever waxed of this song. Things get livelier when Sonny comes out to play, blazing his electrified Farfisa organ for a brief respite. It's hard to say who the Farfisa represents. But maybe that's the point. It's a truly wondrous performance; one of the best on record.

The Paris Tapes: Live at le Théâter du Châtelet 1971 is an unexpected pleasure and a valuable addition to the many live Arkestra recordings out there. This is a side of the Sun that isn't very well known and stands among the Arkestra's best captured performances.

Rufus Zuphall - Avalon And On (1993)

Rufus Zuphall is important German progressive skirt volume out Aachen. It was created 1969 of Günter ruffle (guitar, singing), Helmut Lieblang (bass), Klaus gulden (transverse flute) and Udo Dahmen (Schlagzeug). In their pieces the musicians British merge Folk, Blues and Skirt with Jazz- and classical period elements to an own, often instrument valley coined/shaped style. A characteristic of this group, those usually as so-called “Herb skirt volume“, is the use that is designated Transverse flute, which often to comparisons with the English volume Jethro Tull leads. Beyond that their music from free song structures, psychedelischen elements and the slope to long persisting pieces lives. From the outset harmony ores the Songschreiber duo Helmut Lieblang (texts) and Günter ruffle (music), so that the predominant part of the repertoire these volume originates from their feather/spring.

By the close to the border one Rufus Zuphall played first more into that The Netherlands and in Belgium, where it 1970 before 30.000 spectators their break-through with the Jazzfestival in Bilzen to celebrate could. Beside musicians how Black Sabbath and Cat of Stevens inspired it as only amateur band on the main stage the public there. In December 1970 it took up white the devil “, soon whose piece of title of over 17 minutes of length (with inserted „buzzer time “) within three days their first LP „applied as a classical author of the category. Further pieces, how Splinter piglet or Knight OF third degree attained admittingness. Despite bad selling conditions the LP became a sales impact.

On the second album extend the equipment, and concomitantly the expression and the style width. Round beside the still prominent transverse flute Clavinet, Melotron and 12-saitige guitars the total sound, which developed on the one hand toward harder skirt, on the other hand in addition, the lyric moments particularly out-costs off. Altogether the second album works more extremely, the arrangements more strengthened than with the predecessor. Before their planned third LP, Avalon, decided the musicians were finished, out of musical as to be gone personal reasons in the future own ways. The LP finished to the half appeared then also only over 20 years later than Avalon and on, filled up with live-photographs from the years 1970 and 1971. After the separation tried Udo Dahmen and Manfred clip mountain with new seamists and guitarist the volume alive to hold, which failed in the long run, so that Rufus Zuphall dissolved 1973 finally.

1999 decided the former members to a reunification and played in original occupation, extended by that Hammondorgel- and E-Pianospieler Gero of grains a concert up Castle William stone in Würselen with Aachen. Udo Dahmen left it for time reasons with this concert, and to its place first refuge Schippers moved, before Roland Hegel took over the impact things part. In the year 2000 Rufus Zuphall published the CD as so far last album „Colder Than light live one 2000 “on the label forty-five. In this occupation played and/or. those plays volume until today in various clubs and on numerous festivals, about that Millennium open air Old person castle, on that Heart mountain festival or that Woodstöckchen open air Gressenich.

Günter Krause - guitar, keyboard, vocals
Thomas Krittel - guitar
Manfred Spangenberg - bass
Klaus Gülden - flute
Udo Dahmen - drums, percussion
Helmut Lieblang - bass on tracks 6 and 7

This box-set is one of my most valued prog artifact! It fitted to my RUFUS ZUPHALL collection perfectly, as I didn't have "Phallobst" or the new remaster of "Weiss Der Teufel", which both contain the live tracks of their Aachen concert as bonus tracks. "Avalon And On" LP has been released only recently, and that album containing great proggy psych folk material was an interesting find during late 90's as I bought this box. The single has Günter's version of JIMI HENDRIX's "1983" song, done with piano and singing, nad it's quite beautiful! There's also a neat and informative book about band's history included.

Only reasons giving this 4 stars instead of 5, are that most of the material are now avalable on cheaper and more easier to find releases, so the price of the box begins to be too big for the material it contains. (progarchives.com)

Moussa Doumbia - Keleya (2007)

Moussa Doumbia to pochodzący z Mali saksofonista, aranżer, kompozytor i autor tekstów. W twórczości swojej połączył w szczególny i pełen energii sposób afrobeat z funkiem, osadzając to w klimatach tradycyjnej muzyki malijskiej. Niedługo potem wraca do Mali gdzie niestety umiera w zapomnieniu. Proponowany album "Keleya" to kompilacja otworów nagranych w latach 70-tych.

Moussa Doumbia was a saxophonist, arranger, author/composer who used African American funk as his main inspiration during the 1970’s. Living in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, West Africa, the Malian artist recorded an audacious music for a restricted public, with the help of two French American producers based there, Cathy & Albert Loudes.

Moussa Doumbia probably arrived in Abidjan circa 1974. He played live music at his residency in a fancy nightclub owned by a French man, the Boule Noire, in a trading cosmopolitan neighbourhood called Teichville. Armchairs, imported drinks & spotlights were fair enough to turn the Boule Noire into a central spot for the dancefloor funk amateurs. Office & business employees would get to Treich’ at the end of the day to have a beer in one of the numerous maquis (cheaper, local food, usually open air, restaurants) or a lebanese chawarma. They would melt with the heterogeneous population there, mostly West African & Lebanese businessmen & their employees. But only the richest of them would afford the Boule Noire during the whole week, while most of them would wait until Saturday night to go to the local ball. Treich’ also was an important crossroads for the local music industry and concentrated most of the important producers & record retailers. Lido Musique, Sacodis, Saffiedine, the pioneers were there when records were a more affordable leisure than others to the poorer ones.

Moussa Doumbia lived by the scene & had a place in Treich’, not far from the club. He would play there every night for the locals, mostly Dioula people from Northern Ivory Coast & Southern Mali, for which he would sing in his native language, the Dioula. Described as an enthusiast, cheerfull person by the people who met him, he was a rigorous professional who wouldn’t drink or smoke and could play for hours without a break for his own pleasure. He would hold the microphone, shout, rap & sing, blow his sax, hit a drum…all night long. As original as Nigerian musican Fela Kuti, Moussa Doumbia played a music hardly heard in that part of Africa. Bete, Baoule, Dioula, Mossi peoples who came from all Ivory Coast & the neighbouring countries (Guinea, Mali & Burkina Faso mostly) to Abidjan didn’t really enjoy Fela’s afrobeat. James Brown would stand as a major artist in record stores and on the radio, but local artists wouldn’t play this funk music home. The public usually prefered, when it came to imported music, the Afro Cuban style from New York, Puerto Rico or Cuba. He loved French pop singers like Johnny Halliday, Sylvie Vartan or Mireille Mathieu. Or played international instrumental easy listening by Ray Conniff’s or Paul Mauriat’s orchestras. But Moussa Doumbia was lucky enough to settle in Abidjan at the same time as the first French speaking West African record company, the Société Ivoirienne du Disque (SID). Even at a small scale, the SID built a recording studio, imported a record press & developped a national distribution network, giving more independance to the local record industry. Both SID owners and their main arranger/co-artistic director, African American sax player Greg Skelton, with their American background, were exactly the people Moussa Doumbia needed to record his music there.

The SID recordings were not the best though. On such tunes as « Femme Sénégal » or the long version of « Keleya », the semi-professional sound engineers working at SID and Moussa Doumbia’s arranger skills show real limits. During that specific recording session, Doumbia was backed by a ten pieces band when he usually played with a funk quintet. Even though guitar player Francis Kingsley or organist Cheikh Muhammad « Smith » were excellent musicians, we can clearly hear they didn’t rehearse enough, nor did the sound engineers manage to obtain a clear sound on their two tracks table. The sound was hard, agressive, and sold pretty bad at that time, despite the producers hopes and attempts to export the music to Western Countries. It was not until the late 90’s that Moussa Doumbia’s raw & nasty afro funk rocked London, Paris & New York’s dancefloors.

Moussa Doumbia’s original synthesis of funk & African rhythms is comparable to Fela Kuti’s, Poly Rythmo’s or Ebo Taylor’s. It reflects what was yesterday’s urban culture of a small part of Abidjan’s population. Doumbia used to sing mostly in Dioula. His every day life was very African : he would share a small hut with his wife not far from the club where he played. On one hand, he was a cosmopolitan, who had lived in Paris for several years, was fascinated by African American music, and could sing in both French and English. And even when he played his funk over Dioula or Mandingue rhythmic patterns, his sound would still be quite far from Mali’s Rail Band or Guinea’s Super Boiro afro mandingue pop. His saxophone was always funky, dirty, raw & syncopated. But on the other hand he would choose Dioula to express himself most of the time. An unheard music he would play, giving up sometimes on funk breaks for more hybrid compositions that melted African rhythmic elements to funk or afrobeat arrangements. « Samba » & « Nambara » played on afrobeat/afrofunk tempo, were taken from the Guinean folklore tune made famous by South African singer Myriam Makeba. Most of all, his inspiring themes were African answers to universal questions : relationships between men and women as in « Keleya » (jealousy), greed as in « Wanri » (money), religion with « Faux Marabout ». Even if he could sing in French or in English as in « Black & white », or use funk as a musical background, his lyrics could only be understood by a small scale public who lived the way described in his songs.

Moussa Doumbia came back to France circa 1980 and worked there as a record seller at Richard Dick’s « Salsa Musique » store. He went back to Mali a while later, where he is known as « James », probably a reference to James Brown, and died there.

The music industry & the media never really gave a chance to Moussa Doumbia. His discography was as hard to get as was his story to tell. But his work definitely deserves full aknowledgment and respect, not just because he was an original powerful saxophonist, but also because he never gave up on expressing himself the way he wanted, melting cultures together in an original modern way. Purling Hiss - Hissteria (2010)

Well its finally here. Its the new LP by Purling Hiss and its called Hissteria. Its two sides of hi-energy psychedelic punk rock & roll that manages to weld Funhouses dialed-in sleaze rhythms to the hungover excess of Hendrix at Woodstock. Or Ginn at Polliwog Park. Its full of clanging cymbals, howling vocals, fretboard heroics, and menacing vibes. Purling Hiss is the work of a well-mannered longhair named Mike Polizze, who is best known for his reckless shredding as the guitar player for Philadelphias Birds Of Maya. Hissteria is a suitable soundtrack for zonked drives across the dead highways of the USA. Or for predawn paranoid sessions as you pace back and forth in the kitchen trying figure out just what the hell youre going to do, man. Or just crank it real loud when the party gets strange. Some people will love it and the rest of them can go somewhere else and go fuck themselves. (Richie Records)

Gendos - Ham-Dyt (Shaman Tree, 2005)

Śpiewająca czarna rzeka
Najmilsza z rzek Mancurük lśni
I choć mnie gdzieś po świecie gna
O niej myślę – mój dom jest tam

Tak piękna jest przyroda twa
Nie oddam jej za żaden skarb
Cień twoich drzew znad brzegów hen
Jest ze mną gdy wędrując sam

Śpiewająca bystra rzeka
Od źródeł z gór Mancurük lśni
Uleczyć chce i szczęście dać
Czyste otworzy oczy nam...

(Mancurük, tłumaczenie: Mateusz Moczulski)

Gennady Chamzyryn urodził się w wiosce Shuj położonej w tajdze u podnóża gór Ałtaj. W czasach szkolnych grywał w różnych zespołach, głównie muzykę taneczną, na zabawach. Dyskoteki dotarły do Tuwy stosunkowo niedawno.

W 1994 roku Gendos rozpoczął współpracę z Brytyjczykami, Kenem Hyderem i Timem Hodgkinsonem, tworząc K-Space. Łączą oni w swoich projektach elementy etniczne z jazzem.

W 2000 roku Gendos, wraz z ex-basistą Yat-Kha, Aleksejem Saaja, tworzy formację GenDOS Rock Group.

Obok Gendosa udział wzięli Sainkho Namtchylak, NetLenka, Mazzoll, Jon Dobie, Jacek Majewski, Piotr Rachoń i Jędrzej Kuziela.

Będzie on promował kulturę i kultury różnych narodów.

Stonowana i cicha muzyka…

Ham-Dyt to zamknięta całość, opis jednego dnia z życia człowieka, raczej społeczności ludzkiej.

Usłyszeć tu możemy różne instrumenty ludowe (pierwotny homus – drumla, doshpulur – trzystrunowa gitara, chadagan – chińska cytra, tim-pan - druidzki blaszany bębenek i najważniejszy dungur – szamański, strojny w tajemnicze kwiaty i dzwonki, bęben) archaiczne sposoby śpiewu (khoomej – śpiew gardłowy).

Nawet wiolonczela w rękach Gendosa nabiera odmiennego, chropowatego, charakteru. (gendos.art.pl)

Gendos was born in small, hidden in taiga, village – Shuj. Teenager time Gendos played at dancing parties. His memories of those times “ twist, shake, twist, shake “

In the capital Kyzyl was formed by Vresh Milojan first vanguard Tuvinian band – Biosintes. Gendos became a member of the group. Biosintes music was orientated around an ethnic type of improvisation, sometimes constructed on a rock ostinato, sometimes completely free. But a major inspiration was Tuvinian throat-singing . The basic function of ensemble was the creation of recordings for and the participation in the performances taking place at the 'Kyzel' theatre. Gendos found his shamanic roots during he was playing shaman rule in one of them. In 1996 Biosintes toured in Europe and participated at the Total Music Meeting in Berlin with Sainkho Namtchylak (First Take).

Gendos met two vanguard musicians from Scotland and England , Ken Hyder and Tim Hodgkinson. They formed K-Space. Gendos started to play rock with Darky Medvedev, Alexej Saaia and Igor Karalaev. As Gen-DOS ensemble they recorded Shizo i.d. album.

Gendos started to visit Europe quite often. Poland became his second home. He met many significant musicians. He played concert in Program 3 of Polish Radio with Tie Break. His meeting with Mazzoll opened new music horizons. The concerts became meetings of artists creating, exchanging their experiences, energies “ here and now” without rehearsal. Concert in Mozg Club, legendary, Polish vanguard club with Mazzoll, Majewski, Janicki was broadcasted by Polish Television. The concerts with young Polish jazzmen Piotr Rachon, Aleksnader Papierz were fascinating audience as well. Gendos formed “Tuva Pulse” band. Ensemble based on cooperation with various musicians and idea – that Gendos is a bridge between Tuvian tradition and contemporary music. One of the most interesting happening was concert with Sainkho during Colours of Ostrava Festival (summer 2005)

Exceptional concerts in exceptional place. Alchemia, Jewish district club is strikingly decorated with old paintings and furnitures. Popular with artists, most gallery openings throughout the district culminate in splendid bohemian madness at Alchemia. It has become a genuine place of meeting, meeting of contemporary shamans – musicians. Alchemia was visited during two editions of Shaman Nights in 2005 and 2006 by Sainkho Namtchylak, Jon Dobie, NetLenka, Mazzoll, Jacek Majewski, Piotr Rachon, Jedrzej Kuziela, Altai Khangai (Mongolia) and Chyskyyrai (Sakha).

The supreme project we have released. 13 musicians coming from 3 continents and 8 countries have met on the stage. They represented different cultures, tradition, styles of music, languages and one common idea – meeting of people. Improvising music from beginning to the end. Gendos was the only person who knew everybody: Chyskyyrai from Sakha (Jacutia), Petra Jankova from Czech Republic, Ganbold Muukhai and Ganzorig Nergui from Mongolia, Chris Dahlgren from USA, Asaf Sirkis from Izrael, Jon Dobie from England, Lubos Holzer from Czech Republic, Jorgos Skolias, Jedrzej Kuziela, Jakub Rutkowski, Dominik Strycharski from Poland and special guest, story teller Misha Malcev from Sakha.

Henri Texier - Varech (1977)

Henri Texier to urodzony w 1945 roku, francuski kontrabasista i kompozytor jazzowy. Karierę rozpoczął pod koniec lat 60-tych, występował z najlepszymi muzykami w historii jazzu, m.in. Donem Cherry, Sonny Rollinsem, Dexterem Gordonem, Budem Powellem, Billem Colemanem i Chetem Bakerem.

Henri Texier is an outstanding French bassist who has concentrated most of his activity in his native land. Born in Paris, Texier began his career at age 15 playing piano in nightclubs, but he soon switched to bass in order to play in the big band of Jef Gilson. That brought Texier into contact with drummer Daniel Humair, and together they developed one of the strongest rhythm sections working in France in the early '60s. Texier and Humair quickly found work backing up touring American artists, among them Bud Powell, Donald Byrd, Phil Woods, Dexter Gordon, and Chet Baker. By 1968, Texier and Humair had been joined by pianist Martial Solal, and the three collaborated on some pivotal recordings made with vacationing saxophonist Lee Konitz. Also in 1968, Texier formed the group European Rhythm Machine, which featured Woods, Humair, Gordon Beck, and George Gruntz.

In the '70s, Texier took time off to learn a number of additional instruments, including oud, flute, cello, and various types of percussion, and to develop his singing voice. Upon his return to full-time performance, Texier played in a number of ensembles, often with Louis Sclavis and drummer Aldo Romano. In 1986, Texier began a fruitful relationship with Label Bleu, which has released most of his work since then. In the early '90s, Texier's son Sebastian Texier joined on as reed player with his father's groups, often playing clarinet. North African motifs have played an important part in Texier's work since the mid-'90s and in 2001, Texier's trio began to tour Europe accompanying the practically silent 1970 Algerian film Remparts d'Argile.

Henri Texier has a strongly physical approach to the bass, although his tone is often described as "bell-like." American auditors may feel that Texier simply walks a crooked line between hard bop and free, but in France Texier has gained recognition for his work in developing a type of jazz that is uniquely French and not beholden to American models. In June 2001, Texier was made a Chevalier of the l'Ordre National de la Légion d'Honneur, the highest honor the French government accords to its artists. (Uncle Dave Lewis)

Chicago Women’s Liberation Rock Band - Papa Don't Lay That Shit On Me (1972/2005)

Do priorytetowych postulatów feministek tego okresu należą: przyznanie kobietom prawa do pracy w zmniejszonym wymiarze godzin, dowartościowanie pracy kobiety w domu, zanegowanie instytucji małżeństwa i rodziny.

Często były to małe grupy „rozbudzania świadomości", zespoły redagujące pisma podejmujące wybrane problemy ważne dla kobiet, a pomijane w dyskusji publicznej (np. kwestię stosowania wobec kobiet różnych form przemocy).

Rewolucję w myśleniu wywołała książka Betty Friedan „Mistyka kobiecości" (The Feminine Mistique, 1963 r.). Przemawiała ona do legionów kobiet, które poświęciły własną tożsamość i poczucie własnej wartości, akceptując małżeńskie życie w złotej klatce podmiejskiego domu.

Cztery główne założenia dotyczyły równych szans wykształcenia i pracy, równej płacy, otwarcia całodziennych żłobków, udostępnienia bezpłatnych środków antykoncepcyjnych i bezpłatnego przeprowadzania aborcji bez konieczności podawania powodów. „W 1975 r. dodano postulat niezależności finansowej i prawnej kobiet oraz żądanie przyznania kobietom prawa do określenia preferencji seksualnych i zaprzestania dyskryminacji wobec lesbijek".

(Aneta Kapelusz)

Mountain Moving Day (original record cover, 1972)

(Original liner notes from the album Mountain Moving Day which featured both the Chicago and the New Haven Women's Liberation Rock Bands)

Both the Chicago Women's Liberation Rock Band and the New Haven Women's Liberation Rock Band were begun about 2 1/2 years ago by women in and around the women's movement in our two cities. At that time some of us were already musicians who had gotten an education in sexism by playing in male bands. Some of us were fugitives of high school marching bands, folk music groups and Mrs. Porter's music recitals. Some of us had stashed unplayed instruments under our beds years ago. And some of us were would-be musicians, learning to play for the first time. All of us wanted to create a new kind of band and a new kind of music, though we had no clear idea how to do that.

We knew what we didn't want: the whole male rock trip with its insulting lyrics, battering-ram style and contempt for the audience. We didn't want to write the female counterpart of songs like "Under My Thumb", "Back-Street Girl", "It's a Man's Man's Man's World" where men say to us "you're beneath contempt and we will celebrate your degradation".We had to think of some other way to make a hit besides bumping and grinding like Mick Jagger, raping and burning our guitars like Jimi Hendrix, or whacking off on stage like Jim Morrison. We didn't want to pulverize our audience's (and our own) eardrums with 1010 decibels. As performers we didn't want to get off by trashing the people we played for, and we didn't want to have a star backed up by a squad of secondary musicians.

But what did we want anyway? We knew that we wanted to make music that would embody the radical, feminist, humanitarian vision we shared. And the lyric were the obvious place to begin - the field was wide open. Most of the rock songs women have sung till now were about the pain men cause us the pain that's supposed to define us as women. We didn't want to deny that tradition (women struggled hard for the right to sing even that much) bvt we wanted to sing about how the pain doesn't have to be there how we fight and struggle and love to make it change. At first it was easiest to write new lyrics to old songs, but as time has gone on we have begun to write entirely new material (the record contains examples from both these phases).

We also had to demystify the priesthood of the instrument and the amplifier move and set up the equipment, find the fuses, fix the feedback, mike, monitor and control it all ourselves. We had to try to break down the barriers that usually exist between performers and audiences by rapping a lot between songs about who we are, what we're doing, and where our songs come from. Whenever possible we've played in places where people can dance, done some theatre and comedy, passed out lyrics so people could sing with us, and invited other women to come and jam with us.

The hardest thing to deal with was the music itself what could we make out of such a motley collection of tastes, backgrounds and instruments. We had started from scratch, not by fitting accomplished musicians into traditional slots. We had no leaders, arrangers, managers, agents, roadies even equipment or instruments. We thought of the bands as collectives, so we wanted to learn together and work toward eliminating the inequalities of (musical) power that existed among us. Our progress has been slow and difficult-it has come out of thousands of hours spent practicing, teaching each other, taking lessons, listening to other bands, jamming, writing and working all kinds of things out with each other. Over the past 2 1/2 years each band has evolved its own material and style which is partly the result of the combination of instruments we happened to end up with and largely the result of our efforts to make collective, non-assaultive joyful rock music.

WHAT WE DO:

We are the "agit-rock" arm of our respective women's movements. In Chicago this means we are a chapter of the Chicago Women's Liberation Union (more about this later). In New Haven we are all members of New Haven Women's Liberation. We go places where leaflets can't go college dances, women's conferences, rallies, benefits, festivals, prisons and miscellaneous events. And perhaps we say things that leaflets can't say because we have music and performance to help us generate for those few hours while we're playing some glimpse of the world we'd like to see happen. Some of our jobs have been more than just exciting'we and the audience have shared in a deeply-felt celebration of our vision. At others we've been met with bad vibes, hostile men, inadequate electricity, freezing weather.

We charge for our performances according to what people can pay, and so far have spent our earnings on equipment, transportation, food, drink, rent for rehearsal space and donations to the women's movement. We don't see the bands as profit-making (all of us have other jobs which support us) but as part of what needs to be done to change the culture of this society.

What we all want to do is use the power of rock to transform what the world is like into a vision of what the world could be like; create an atmosphere where women are free enough to struggle to be free, and make a new kind of culture that is an affirmation of ourselves and of all people.

CWLU

We in the Chicago band wanted to add just a little note about the organization that we're a part of because we feel that it has been important to us and to the women in Chicago. This is the Chicago Women's Liberation Union, which is the only on-going radical feminist organization of its type in the country. In its three years it has provided a political unity and sense of direction for much of the women's movement in Chicago. Some of the projects included in the Union are:
  • Women's Graphics Collective (original feminist art & posters) Liberation School for Women (alternative education for and about women)
  • Health Project (which fights to keep city maternity centers open and offers pregnancy testing and health referrals)
  • Work Work Group (to equalize salary and job differentials for city employees)
  • Womankind (a women's newspaper)
  • Speakers Bureau
  • Rape Crisis Cente
