GG Allin - Shit Sprayin' Classics (2001)

O tym kto jest najbardziej wykręconą postacią w historii rocka lepiej nie dyskutować. Każdy ma na ten temat własne zdanie i własne kryteria oceny owego "wykręcenia". Jednak każdy się chyba zgodzi, że w "wykręcone" postaci rock`n`roll obfituje bardziej niż jakikolwiek inny gatunek muzyki. Czy znacie jednak kogoś kto swoim stylem bycia i podejściem do scenicznego show byłby w stanie swą kreatywnością przebić pana GG Allina?

Z jakiegoś dziwnego powodu większość obrazoburczych oszołomów pochodzi z konserwatywnych, bogobojnych rodzin. I tak też było w przypadku tego muzyka. Nawiedzony ojciec chłopca miał wizję - we śnie objawił mu się sam Zbawca, który obwieścił, że oto nowonarodzone dziecko będzie doskonałą, silną i naznaczoną przez Pana istotą. Dumny tata postanowił ochrzcić swego potomka imieniem Jezus Chrystus Allin. Dla najbliższych - GG.

Dopiero po rozwodzie rodziców i pozbyciu się balastu w postaci tyranizującego familię ojca, GG zaczął nieśmiało pokazywać mroczną stronę swojej natury. Zaczęło się niewinnie: najpierw, za złe zachowanie, został wydalony ze szkoły i przeniesiony do placówki wyspecjalizowanej w kształceniu nieco trudniejszej młodzieży. Później do jednego z klasowych zdjęć Allin przebrał się za dziewczynkę, co nie do końca spodobało się nauczycielom. Na boku kradł, sprzedawał narkotyki i ciężko pracował na opinię "złego chłopca". W dalszym jednak ciągu nie wyróżniał się swoim zachowaniem z tłumu innych niesfornych małolatów. I podobnie jak inni zbuntowani młodzieńcy zakładał garażowe zespoły. Z jednym z nich wystąpił nawet w szkole. W tamtym czasie jedynym szokującym scenicznym popisem GG było zniszczenie szkolnej dekoracji. Aż włos się jeży...

Pierwszym znaczącym zespołem Allina był The Jabbers - kapela wyraźnie nawiązująca do dokonań Iggy`ego Popa i klasyków punk rocka. W międzyczasie muzyk wziął ślub i dorobił się córki. I tu by się burzliwe lata kariery muzyka zakończyły, gdybyśmy tylko mieli do czynienia z każdym innym rock`n`rollowcem. Wkrótce małżeństwo się rozpadło, a Allin zaczął prowadzać się z nastoletnią dziewczynką.

GG angażował się w kolejne muzyczne projekty: The Texas Nazis, The Cedar Street Sluts czy The Scumfucs. Z tym ostatnim nagrał nawet dwa albumy. Oto pełna lista utworów z płyty "Eat my fuc" z 1987 roku.

"Hard Candy Cock", "Out for Blood", "I Don''t Give a Shit", "Drink, Fight, and Fuck", "Convulsions", "I Wanna Fuck Your Brains Out", "I Want to Rape You", "Teacher''s Pet", "Fuckin' the Dog", "Cock on the Loose", "Clit Licker", "God of Fire in Hell", "Blow Jobs"- Tytuły mówią chyba wystarczająco dużo?

Jak przystało na każdego prawdziwego punka, Allin nie odmawiał sobie alkoholu i wszelkiego rodzaju środków psychoaktywnych. A brał wszystko co wpadło mu w ręce. Anegdoty mówią, że łykał podane mu tabletki bez pytania co właśnie zażywa. Z czasem uzależnił się też od heroiny. Taka mieszanka wszelkiej maści substancji, które aplikował sobie muzyk, nie mogła pozostać obojętna dla psychicznej kondycji GG. Wraz z uzależnieniami przyszedł okres najbardziej "kreatywnych" lat Allina.

Aby wzmocnić swój outsiderski wizerunek artysta przestał się myć. Oprócz wizerunku wzmocniła się też woń unosząca się w promieniu kilku metrów od muzyka. Prawdziwy przełom nastąpił jednak na scenie. Allin do klasycznego elementu rockowych koncertów dodał kilka własnych elementów. Z dziką przyjemnością zdzierał z siebie śmierdzące ciuchy i występował całkiem nago. Stałym elementem jego popisów było samookaleczanie się poprzez energiczne uderzanie mikrofonem w głowę. W ten sposób piosenkarz pozbył się kilku przednich zębów. Niejednokrotnie też usiłował wepchnąć sobie tenże mikrofon do odbytu...Gwoździem programu artysty była defekacja, obsmarowywanie się fekaliami, ewentualnie obrzucanie nimi publiczności. Aby ułatwić sobie ten numer, artysta zażywał przed występem ogromne ilości środków przeczyszczających. Koncerty zespołu kończyły się najczęściej po kilkunastu minutach od wejścia kapeli na scenę. Do tego czasu, zakrwawiony i uświniony własnymi wydzielinami, muzyk zdołał kogoś obrazić, pobić lub w inny sposób złamać któryś z artykułów amerykańskiego prawa. Najszybciej interweniowali właściciele lokali, w których grupa Allina występowała. Jednak najczęściej impreza kończyła się wraz ze wkroczeniem na salę policji, która rozganiała podekscytowanych fanów i aresztowała energicznego muzyka...bądź przewoziła go na oddział intensywnej terapii, gdzie lekarze zbierali połamanego piosenkarza do kupy.Tak więc GG stał się wyjątkowo częstym gościem komisariatów i tymczasowych aresztów, do których trafił prawie czterdzieści razy. "Zrobiliśmy sobie tournee. Byłem aresztowany w Dalton, Georgii, następnie w Colorado, na Florydzie(...), Houston, no i w Texasie". Artysta znalazł sobie nowe hobby – zaczął interesować się słynnymi mordercami i śledził ich biografie. Z jednym z nich nawet się spotkał. Przebywający w więzieniu zabójca trzydziestu młodych mężczyzn, John Wayne Gacy, uznał Allina za dobrego, aczkolwiek wyjątkowo śmierdzącego, człowieka. Kolejne konflikty z prawem i opinia szaleńca wisząca nad artystą zdawały się jedynie podkręcać ego GG. Wkrótce uznał się za mesjasza najprawdziwszego rock`n`rolla i opublikował swoje poglądy w formie manifestu. "Kiedy urodziłem się w 1956 roku rock`n`roll dopiero powstawał. Jak myślicie, czemu tak było? Bo to ja go stworzyłem. To ja stworzyłem Elvisa. Ja byłem tą siłą twórczą. Nawet zanim przyszedłem na świat – już to tworzyłem. Ale przez te wszystkie lata ludzie pozwolili rock`n`rollowi odejść. Teraz jestem gotowy aby go przywrócić.(...)" - fragment manifestu Allina. Swoje mesjanistyczne przesłania muzyk coraz częściej wygłaszał w formie monologów, które przemycał pomiędzy kolejnymi utworami podczas koncertów, a także na swych kolejnych albumach, m.in. na płycie nagranej wraz z grupą ANTiSEEN.

Do rockowych historii przeszły też słynne samobójcze próby artysty. Kilkakrotnie przesuwał termin swego samounicestwienia na scenie, ponieważ za każdym razem kiedy "ten dzień" miał nadejść GG, z jakiegoś powodu, trafiał za kratki... Jednym ze słynniejszych powodów był gwałt i znęcanie się nad kobietą – muzyk okaleczył ją nożem, pił jej krew i przypalał ciało. Allin bronił się twierdząc, że poszkodowana zgodziła się na takie traktowanie.

Niestety, GG zmarł w mało spektakularny sposób. Po jednym z (jak zwykle) zakończonych przed czasem koncertów w Nowym Yorku nagi i zakrwawiony artysta opuścił wraz z fanami lokal i swoim nadpobudliwym zachowaniem narobił sporo zamieszania na ulicy. Wkrótce piosenkarz trafił na domową imprezę, gdzie zaaplikował sobie zbyt dużą dawkę heroiny i wyciągnął kopyta... Ale, show must go on - zabawa trwała nadal. Co jakiś czas ktoś robił sobie zdjęcie ze zwłokami Allina, ale nikt na tyle nie przejął się obecnością trupa, aby zawiadomić pogotowie. Dopiero rano któryś z imprezowiczów zorientował się, że GG opuścił ten padół smutków i rozpaczy...Podczas pogrzebu otwarta trumna ukazała niezbyt ciekawy widok. Zgodnie z życzeniem zmarłego jego ciało nie zostało umyte ani odpowiednio do pochówku przygotowane. Nad bladymi, brudnymi zwłokami unosił się typowy dla Allina smród kału, a koło niego spoczywała butelka whiskey. Ponadto wielu przyjaciół żegnających GG wpychało mu do ust różnego typu narkotyki i wlewało alkohol. Publikację tego zdjęcia sobie darowaliśmy, ale dla upartych jest ono do znalezienia w sieci.

Dzieło mesjasza prawdziwego rock`n`rolla żyje w pamięci największych jego fanów, którzy regularnie dewastują grób swojego idola lub traktują miejsce jego pochówku jak latrynę. GG byłby z nich dumny! (coldseed - joemonster.org)

Kevin Michael "GG" Allin (born Jesus Christ Allin, August 29, 1956 – June 28, 1993) was an American punk rock singer-songwriter, who performed and recorded with many groups during his career. GG Allin is perhaps best remembered for his notorious live performances, which often featured transgressive acts, including coprophagia, self-mutilation, and attacking audience members. AllMusic has called him "the most spectacular degenerate in rock & roll history."

Although more notorious for his stage antics than for his music, he recorded prolifically, not only in the punk rock genre, but also in spoken word, country, and more traditional-style rock. His extremely politically incorrect lyrics, which often covered subjects such as misogyny, pedophilia and racism, polarized listeners and created varied opinions of him within the highly politicized punk community. When questioned about his music and concerts, Allin often replied that he was trying to make rock music "dangerous" again.

Allin's music was often poorly recorded/produced, given limited distribution, and was met with mostly negative reviews from critics. Despite these factors, Allin maintained a cult following throughout his career, and a fanbase that has greatly expanded since his death. Though Allin promised for several years before his death that he would commit suicide onstage during one of his concerts, he died June 28, 1993 of an accidental heroin overdose.

Allin was born Jesus Christ Allin at Weeks Memorial Hospital in Lancaster, New Hampshire, the younger of two sons to Merle Colby Allin, Sr. and Arleta Gunther. He was given this messianic name because his fanatical Christian father told his wife that Jesus Christ himself had visited him, and told him that his newborn son would be a great and all powerful man in the vein of the Messiah.

His older brother, Merle Colby Allin, Jr., was unable to pronounce "Jesus" properly and kept calling him "Jeje", which became "GG". The family lived in a log cabin with no water or electricity in northern New Hampshire. Allin's father, who forbade all conversation in the home after dark, was a religious fanatic and an antisocial man, and was physically abusive towards his wife and children, though GG himself never publicly stated that this caused any of his later personal troubles. At age 12, Allin contracted Lyme disease and claimed to have never fully recovered from the effects of having the disease at such a young age.

In 1961, Arleta filed for divorce from Merle Sr., as his mental instability was worsening. GG Allin and his brother were from that time raised by their mother and stepfather, and settled in East St. Johnsbury, Vermont in 1966. Arleta changed her younger son's legal name to Kevin Michael Allin on March 2, 1962 during his first year of schooling. Arleta had allowed his birth name to stand until this point, and finally changed it in order to give her son a chance of a mockery-free childhood.

Allin was a poor student at school, being placed in special education classes and having to repeat the third grade. According to his older brother, Allin experienced bullying by fellow students due to not fitting in. In his sophomore year of high school, he began attending school cross-dressed, which he said was inspired by the New York Dolls. When asked about his childhood, GG has been quoted as saying "Very chaotic. Full of chances and dangers. We sold drugs, stole, broke into houses, cars, etc. Did whatever we wanted to for the most part - including all the bands we played in. People even hated us back then."

In 1976 GG was accepted to Ringling Brothers Clown College in Sarasota, Florida. He attended the school for one year but didn't graduate.

GG Allin's earliest musical influences were 1960s British Invasion bands like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Dave Clark 5, and The Monkees. In the early 70s, Alice Cooper became a large influence on Allin. Allin's earliest recorded musical endeavors were as a drummer. In his mid-teens, he and his older brother Merle formed their first band, Little Sister's Date, which lasted a little over a year. The group covered songs by Aerosmith, KISS, and other popular hard rock bands of the time period.

Allin graduated from Concord High School in Concord, Vermont in 1975, and shortly after formed the band Malpractice with several high school friends and Merle Allin. He was the drummer for Malpractice until the band separated in 1977. He became the drummer for the band Stripsearch, writing and performing the songs "Galileo" and "Jesus in New York".

From September 1977 to April 1984, Allin performed as frontman for The Jabbers, in which he played drums and performed vocals. Allin's 1980 debut album was Always Was, Is and Always Shall Be. Allin was a punk rock frontman akin to Iggy Pop and Stiv Bators who played music that was catchy, a danceable mix of power pop and hardcore punk. The lyrical content was often brash yet humorous, and was not yet outrageously offensive. At one point, industry veteran and The Dead Boys producer Genya Ravan managed him. Tension within The Jabbers mounted as Allin grew uncontrollable, uncompromising and vicious.

The Jabbers disbanded and parted ways. Allin's drug use started during this period. Allin fronted many acts during the early to mid 1980s. This includes albums from The Cedar Street Sluts, The Scumfucs in 1982 and The Texas Nazis in 1985. Allin remained in the underground hardcore scene yet was not part of the east coast hardcore scene. His performances in Manchester, New Hampshire with the Cedar Street Sluts earned him the nickname of "the madman of Manchester."

Allin gained wider attention with the Reachout International Records (ROIR) cassette-only release of Hated in the Nation (1987) containing tracks from Allin's out-of-print catalogue with The Jabbers, The Scumfucs and Cedar Street Sluts. The tape also featured several in-studio and in-concert recordings with an all-star band assembled by producer Maximum RocknRoll and early Allin patron Mykel Board. This band featured J Mascis of Dinosaur Jr. on lead guitar and Bongwater record producer/musician Mark Kramer on bass.

By the mid to late 1980s, Allin was addicted to heroin and alcohol and generally abused any intoxicants provided to him, sometimes taking pills without even asking what they were. His hygiene was atrocious and he rarely bathed. At this point, Allin also began eating laxatives before performances - as defecation was becoming a regular stage act. Allin described himself as "the last true rock and roller". By this, he meant that rock and roll music itself had started as an embodiment of danger, anti-authoritarianism and rebelliousness but had become largely taken over by corporations and business concerns. Allin's music and performances were thus meant to return rock and roll to what he saw as its roots, reclaiming it from the corporate system.

Allin idolized country music legend Hank Williams, Sr, and saw himself as a kindred spirit. Both were relative loners and outsiders, both were habitual users of intoxicants, both lived with few, if any, possessions and both traveled the country relentlessly. GG Allin's acoustic output, documented particularly on the EP The Troubled Troubador, was heavily influenced by Williams. He recorded his own rewrites of Hank Williams, Jr.'s "Family Tradition" and David Allan Coe's "Longhaired Redneck", calling his own versions "Scumfuc Tradition" and "Outlaw Scumfuc" respectively. Later, Allin also released another country album Carnival of Excess; this is probably his most professionally recorded and mixed album.

During this period, Allin collaborated with Bulge (also known as Psycho under a different name, on the album Freaks, Faggots, Drunks and Junkies), The Aids Brigade (the 7" EP Expose Yourself To Kids) and The Holymen (You Give Love a Bad Name).

Allin also began performing many spoken word pieces. Video footage of these are available but rare. Unwilling to seek steady employment, Allin supported himself by selling his own records. He also claimed to have committed criminal acts such as breaking and entering, robbery and mugging. Allin was also fascinated with serial killers. He wrote to and visited John Wayne Gacy in prison a number of times and Gacy painted a portrait of Allin, which became the album cover to the soundtrack of the film Hated: GG Allin And The Murder Junkies (see murderabilia). When asked about Allin, Gacy said: "G. G., Great kid - love'em to death - but if he doesn't stink like the worst pissy-ass wino."

By this point, Allin's performances, which often resulted in considerable damage to venues and sound equipment, were regularly stopped after only a few songs by police or venue owners. Allin was charged with assault and battery or indecent exposure a number of times. His constant touring was only stopped by jail time or by long hospital stays for broken bones, blood poisoning, and other physical trauma.

Another attraction to Allin performances was his continual threats of suicide. In 1988, Allin wrote to Maximum RocknRoll stating that he would commit suicide on stage on Halloween 1989. However, he was in jail when that day came. He continued his threat each following year but ended up imprisoned each following Halloween. When asked why he does not follow through with his threats, Allin stated, "With GG, you don't get what you expect—you get what you deserve." He also stated that suicide should only be done when one had reached his peak, meeting the afterlife at his strongest point and not at his weakest (see jump the shark).

In late 1989, Allin was arrested and charged with rape and torture of a female acquaintance in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Earlier in the year, he had been signed by Enigma Records who later dropped him in light of these groupie beating rumors. Enigma had a distribution deal with EMI/Capitol at the time and was for all intents and purposes a major label.

In a psychological evaluation made as part of the trial, Allin was judged as having at least average intelligence, and was described as "courteous, cooperative and candid". The unnamed evaluator noted Allin did not appear psychotic, and seemed comfortable with his unorthodox lifestyle. However, the evaluator asserted Allin did have behaviors consistent with masochism and narcissism, and displayed symptoms of borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorder.

Allin initially denied the charges, claiming that the woman was a willing participant in their sexual activities. Allin admitted to cutting her, burning her, and drinking her blood, but insisted she did the same thing to him. Allin also claimed that inconsistencies in the woman's statements to authorities supported his assertions. The judge in the case agreed there were substantial inconsistencies in the woman's account. Ultimately, however, Allin plea bargained to reduced felony assault charges, and he was imprisoned from December 20, 1989 to March 26, 1991.

After his release from prison, Allin skipped parole to go on another tour, footage of which was shot for Todd Phillips' documentary Hated: GG Allin and the Murder Junkies. The film contained graphic scenes from a performance Allin gave at an East Village, New York rock club, Space at Chase. Allin stripped naked, defecated on the floor, wiped his feces on himself and threw feces into the audience. Allin broke a woman's nose and assaulted several other people in the crowd. Clips were included from other Allin appearances, as well as interviews with Allin, his band, and their fans. The film came out in 1994 and was released on DVD in 1997.

During the 1990s GG Allin recorded his Murder Junkies album released by New Rose Records and featuring the band ANTiSEEN. This album contained ten musical tracks and ten spoken-word pieces. Other than Freaks, Faggots, Drunks and Junkies, Allin considered this album to be his most polished professionally recorded album that explored his persona and stated his philosophy on life. It was also during this period that Allin recorded the War In My Head - I'm Your Enemy album released on Awareness Records and featuring the band Shrinkwrap. This particular album consists of one 45-minute track that is a collage of spoken-word pieces which Shrinkwrap put to music.

Meanwhile, Allin's growing notoriety led to appearances on various television shows: Geraldo, The Jerry Springer Show and The Jane Whitney Show. At the time of his death, Allin was making plans for a spoken-word album. He also mentioned a somewhat unlikely European tour, enthusiastically talking about it in the hours before his death.

It was during this time in prison that Allin began feeling re-energized about his life and "mission", as he put it. He wrote and published The GG Allin Manifesto (1990) during this period.

GG Allin's last show was on June 27, 1993 at a small club called The Gas Station, a punk venue located inside of a former gas station at 194 E 2nd Street in Manhattan. During the second song, the power went out, after which he trashed the venue, walked across the street entirely naked, and then continued on (now wearing shorts, but still covered in blood and feces) through the neighborhood, followed by a large group of fans.

After walking the streets for several hours, Allin eventually went to the apartment of John Handley Hurt and Dwanna Yount at 29 Avenue B in Manhattan. There, he and others continued to party and use drugs. Sometime during the evening, Allin ingested large amounts of heroin, on which he accidentally overdosed and slipped into an unconscious state. Those in the apartment posed for photos with Allin around 2 A.M., not realizing that the musician was already in the early stages of respiratory failure.

One fan at the scene later told police that he was snoring at the time the pictures were taken, leading the others in the apartment to believe he had fallen asleep.

Sometime in the early morning of June 28, Allin died from the effects of his accidental heroin overdose. He was 36 years old.

The next morning, some noticed that Allin still lay motionless in the same place where they had left him and called for an ambulance. Allin was pronounced dead at the scene.

There were two wakes for GG, one was a traditional Irish wake and the other was his rock and roll wake, according to GG's mother Arleta. At his funeral, Allin's bloated, discolored corpse was dressed in his black leather jacket and trademark jock strap.

He had a bottle of Jim Beam beside him in his casket, per his wishes (openly stated in his self-penned acoustic country ballad, "When I Die"). As part of his brother's request, the mortician was instructed not to wash the corpse (which smelled strongly of feces), or apply any makeup.

Allin's funeral became a wild party. Friends posed with the corpse, placing drugs and whiskey into its mouth. As the funeral ended, his brother put a pair of headphones on Allin. The headphones were plugged into a portable cassette player, in which was loaded a copy of The Suicide Sessions. The video of his funeral is widely available for purchase, and is an extra feature on the Hated DVD and some bootleg VHS tapes. Allin was buried in mother Arleta's plot beside his grandparents.

As of some time late 2009, GG Allin's headstone went missing from his grave site. How it disappeared is unknown. The base of his grave marker is still there. (wikipedia)

Powstanie Warszawskie 1944 - Warsaw Uprising

W poniedziałek przypada 67 rocznica Powstania Warszawskiego. PAMIĘTAJMY !!!

Powstanie Warszawskie, rozpoczęło się 1 sierpnia 1944 roku o godzinie 17:00. Chociaż według planów działania zbrojne miały rozpocząć się dopiero po 24 godzinach od ogłoszenia pogotowia, to już przed godziną W rozpoczęła się walka, pomiędzy koncentrującymi się oddziałami polskimi a patrolami czy mniejszymi oddziałami niemieckimi. Warszawa została podzielona na siedem obwodów: Śródmieście, Mokotów, Żoliborz, Wola, Ochota, Praga, i obwód "Obroża" - mający w swym zasięgu powiat warszawski, oraz samodzielny rejon "Okęcie". Do walki w samym mieście stanęło około 38 tysięcy żołnierzy, oraz około 11 tysięcy żołnierzy obwodu podmiejskiego. Ze względu na fatalne rozkazy wydane w przeddzień powstania, m.in. odesłanie do okręgów wschodnich dużych partii uzbrojenia wraz z amunicją (łącznie około 900 pistoletów maszynowych) uzbrojenie oddziałów AK, było fatalne. Według stanu z 29 lutego 1944 roku okręg Warszawa dysponował ogółem: 20 ciężkimi karabinami maszynowymi, 98 ręcznymi karabinami maszynowymi, 604 pistoletami maszynowymi, 1386 karabinami, 2665 pistoletami, 2 armatkami przeciwpancernymi, 2 piatami, 12 rusznicami przeciwpancernymi, 50 000 granatami i 5000 butelkami zapalającymi. Powyżej przedstawione liczby ukazuję nam dysproporcje pomiędzy żołnierzami AK a regularnymi oddziałami Wermachtu i SS.

Sama dysproporcja sił i środków, nie wpłynęła na klęskę powstania. Na końcową porażkę nałożyło się wiele czynników, natury zarówno politycznej jak i wojskowej. Najczęściej wskazuje się, na bierną postawę strony radzieckiej, choć niewiele osób wie iż dowództwo Armii Czerwonej, nie ustaliło ze stroną polską zasad jakiejkolwiek pomocy. Większą rolę odegrała tu strona Amerykańska i Brytyjska, które na prośby Naczelnego Wodza Władysława Sikorskiego, o przekazanie Polsce samolotów dalekiego zasięgu1, kolejno odsyłały go z kwitkiem. Wpłynęło to na niedostateczne zaopatrzenie AK w broń i amunicje. Innym czynnikiem, wskazywanym przez wielu historyków były błędy w strategii wypracowanej przez KG AK. Zakładała ona iż słabo uzbrojone oddziały opanują ponad 150 obiektów i następnie będą się w stanie bronić, aż do wejścia sił radzieckich do miasta. Wielkie znaczenie miała też łączność, która prawie w całości opierała się na pracy łączniczek.

W latach późniejszych wydano wiele prac, które odpowiadały na szereg pytań: "Czy powstanie można było uratować?", "Czy miało ono sens?", jednakże niewiele jest prac czysto teoretycznych, które prezentują teorie dotyczące sytuacji w Europie czy i nawet na świece, w momencie, kiedy powstanie nie zostaje rozpoczęte...

Jeżeli rozpatrzyć powstanie tylko jako czynnik polityczny to w momencie kiedy nie doszło by do skutku to i tak nie zmieniłoby to sytuacji.

Przypomnijmy: powstanie warszawskie, było częścią planu "Burza", którego celem było zamanifestowanie polskiej obecności na wschodzie i występowanie wobec nadchodzących oddziałów radzieckich, w roli gospodarzy zarówno wojskowych jak i cywilnych. Jednak granice Polski powojennej zostały ustalone już na konferencji w Teheranie w dniach 28.11. - 1.12 1943, a ostatecznie po małych korektach w Jałcie. Widzimy więc, iż pomimo staranie ze strony KG AK, działania mające potwierdzić polskość, miast znajdujących się na wschodzie, pozbawione były sensu. Inną bardziej znaczącą konsekwencją, zaniechania powstania, było podważenie jednej z głównej, nazwijmy to idei, przyświecającej powstaniu Armii Krajowej. Brzmiała ona tak: "Konspiracja działa z ukrycia i stawia sobie jako cel główny przygotowanie narodu do powstania [...], przez co zaprawia naród do walki i podrywa ducha u wroga" 2. Widzimy więc, iż powstanie czy to ogólnonarodowe, czy te, które wybuchło w stolicy, było jednym z głównych założeń utworzenia ZWZ/AK. W sytuacji kiedy do takowego by nie doszło, zachwiana zostałaby wiarygodność, czy to samej Komendy Głównej AK, a przez to całej Armii Krajowej, czy polskiego Rządu na Uchodźstwie, którego AK była zbrojnym ramieniem w ramach AMGOTu (Allied Military Goverment of Occupier Territories)3. Nie wolno zapominać o samych żołnierzach Armii Krajowej, którzy przecież od początku świadomi byli celu swoich działań, jakim było powstanie, czy to ogólnokrajowe czy przeprowadzone tylko w określonych rejonach. Gdy do takowego by nie doszło, duch walki, oddanie, wszystko to znikło by, ponieważ zabrakło by celu, który je podtrzymywał.

Pod względem wojskowym Powstanie Warszawskie, jest bardziej złożonym problemem i ewentualny jego brak komplikował i zarazem upraszczał sytuacje po obu stronach frontu. Gdyby generał Bór-Komorowski nie wydał rozkazu do rozpoczęcia niemiecka sytuacja wyglądała by zapewne inaczej, gdyż nie mieliby oni w bezpośrednim sąsiedztwie frontu, punktu zapalnego, jakim niewątpliwie było powstanie. Świadczyć o tym może np. liczba generałów niemieckich, którzy w liczbie dwunastu, znaleźli się w bezpośrednim sąsiedztwie bitwy, aby czuwać nad rozwojem sytuacji. Innym niewątpliwie ważnym powodem dla którego Niemcy nie chcieliby, aby doszło do powstania, były straty jakie ponieśli w toku walk. Reichsführer SS Heinrich Himmler mówił 21 września 1944 r.: "Od pięciu tygodni prowadzimy walkę o Warszawę. [...] Walka ta jest najcięższa spośród tych, jakie prowadziliśmy od początku wojny. Można ją porównać z walką uliczną o Staligrad. Jest ona tak samo ciężka". Straty niemieckiej 9. Armii, która miała bronić się w oparciu o Wisłę na odcinku warszawskim, wynosiły około 26 tysięcy żołnierzy (17 tysięcy zabitych i 9 tysięcy rannych), wynosiły około 25% stanu osobowego. Jednak gdyby nie wybuchło powstanie w Warszawie, Stalin zapewne nie wydałby rozkazu zatrzymania armii radzieckich na linii Wisły i te po jej przekroczeniu, zaatakowały by niemieckie armie już na zachodnim brzegu. A tak przez 2 miesiące niemieckie oddziały były praktycznie nie niepokojone przez czerwonoarmistów, dając im czas na reorganizacje i uzupełnienia. Dla strony radzieckiej ewentualny brak powstania, zmusiłby ich do bardzo ciężkich walk ulicznych na terenie Warszawy.

Widzimy więc iż Powstanie Warszawskie było wydarzeniem, którego ewentualny brak, bardzo zmieniłaby historię. Było ono "zapisane" w historii już od 1939 roku, kiedy zaczęły powstawać pierwsze organizacje podziemne. Same powstanie wybuchło, przede wszystkim ze względów politycznych a nie jak to powinno być, wojskowych. Nie powinno się oceniać powstania w sposób szablonowy. Myślę iż dobrym zakończeniem wszystkich rozważań o tej jednej z najbardziej krwawych i najdłuższych bitew II wojny światowej, będą słowa Owidiusza: "Koniec wieńczy dzieło" - koniec, krwawy, pełen cierpienia i rozpaczy....jak i cała historia Armii Krajowej. On 1st August 2004 Poland commemorated the 67th Anniversary of the Warsaw Uprising. This moment was marked by the unveiling of the brand new Rising Museum in a solemn ceremony which was attended by Colin Powell and Chancellor Schroeder alongside other eminent statesmen. The unprecedented brutality of the Second World War may have long since been consigned to the history books by many countries, particularly those in the West, but in Poland the terrible wounds are far from healed. Poland lost seventeen percent of its population during the war, a staggering 6 million people (compared to 500,000 Americans, or 400,000 Brits), and its capital, Warsaw, was utterly destroyed.

Moreover, unlike its Allies, Poland's sufferings didn't stop in 1945 at the end of the War. For nearly half a century more, the Poles were denied their freedom and forced to endure the brutal and totalitarian regime of Soviet Russia. During these fifty years of Communist rule all mention of the heroic Warsaw Uprising was forbidden - unless it was to slander those who had taken part in it. Following the absorption of Poland into the Soviet sphere of influence, Stalin declared the Uprising illegal and set about hunting down any surviving freedom fighters, with a view to killing or imprisoning them. It was a cynical attempt to suppress Polish nationalism and spirit.

Sixty years on and the enforced silence of the Communists has been broken: the brave resistance of the Armia Krajowa (also known as the Home Army) is finally gaining the recognition it deserves as one of the most heroic - and ultimately tragic - episodes of the Second World War.

The Struggle

In the Summer of 1944 the tides of war were turning against the Germans. The Americans and British had landed in Normandy and the Red Army had bulldozed through the Eastern front, and was marching on Warsaw. Ever since the beginning of the Nazi occupation the Poles had been preparing for a full-scale underground offensive, and on 1st August 1944 the order was finally given by General 'Bor' Komorowski for the forces of the Armia Krajowa (AK) to rise up and claim Warsaw back from the Nazis, who had held the city for over four years.

So it was that a force of 50,000 soldiers, some trained and equipped - others volunteers (including women and children , took up arms and began an assault on key strategical positions throughout the city. The Home Army won several bloody skirmishes in those first few days, and during this time the bold red and white of the Polish national flag flew over the Old Town. The mood was triumphant and, in those areas secured by the insurgents, the Varsovians held concerts, poetry readings and other entertainments as they celebrated their newly earned freedom. Unbeknown to them it was to be the city's last taste of freedom for forty-four years.

Although the Polish attack was planned to displace the German troops stationed in the city, it was only ever planned to hold the town for several days until the Russians arrived with support. Upon hearing the news of the Uprising, Himmler was so furious that he decreed that the whole city and its population should be destroyed as an example to the rest of Europe. Meanwhile, far from coming to the rescue of the doomed Poles, Stalin halted the Russian advance, claiming that the resistance was illegal and the AK were 'fascists'. The mighty Red Army did little more than watch the struggle from across the Vistula as the Germans regained control of the city. What's more, kindly 'Uncle Joe' deliberately obstructed the rest of the Allies from dispatching aid to the insurgents - refusing even to allow the Americans and the Brits to use precious airbases that were now under Soviet control.

What was the reason for this inaction? Simply put, Stalin hated the Poles, considering them his arch-enemy. He was still harbouring resentment over the Soviet-Polish War in which the Bolsheviks were humiliated and the Poles were able to claim all disputed territories from the Russians, including Lwow (now Lviv, in the Ukraine) and Wilno (now Vilnius, in Lithuania) - the same struggle in which he was almost court-martialled for his inadequacies a military commander. Now that the Germans were doing such a good job of destroying his bitter enemies, Stalin certainly didn't want to stop them. Moreover, with the last of Poland's home-based soldiers and leaders destroyed, he would be free to work his will over the ruined country.

And so, what was supposed to be a two or three day coup turned into a brutal and bloody two month struggle for the Home Army. The heavily reinforced Germans struck back at the insurgents with the full force of their firepower: tanks, rocket launchers, and air raids were just some of the hazards the ill-equipped Poles had to contend with. The city became a giant warzone and civilians were not spared. Just a few days after the Uprising began the Germans sent a chilling message to the insurgents, executing at least 30,000 citizens in what is now referred to as the Wola massacre. They rounded up people from the houses in the districts which they still controlled and shot them - women, children and the elderly were not spared. This inhumane genocide was intended to crush the Poles spirit for the fight. It didn't work. However, another diabolical tactic - using female civilians as human shields for German tanks - proved effective, stacking the odds further against the beleaguered Home Army.

Unable to compete with the reinforced German troops, the insurgents were forced into hiding, often into the sewers, from where they continued to orchestrate and co-ordinate attacks. The Germans were in control of water and power supplies whereas the Home Army were desperately lacking supplies of any kind - including food and ammunition (every animal in the city had been eaten - even the vermin - and shooting at the German planes was banned in order to conserve precious bullets). As the battle for the city raged on, with Varsovians dying at a rate of 2,000 a day, it became only a matter of time before the rebels were forced to capitulate. They finally did so on October 2nd, 63 days after the Uprising began.

In the two month struggle 18,000 Home Army soldiers died and 12,000 were wounded with the survivors either sent to German POW camps or managing to go into hiding. A staggering 250,000 civilians were killed during the Uprising. Meanwhile the German suffered 10,000 fatalities with nearly as many again wounded.

The Aftermath

The tragedy of the Warsaw Uprising lies not only in the bloody 63 day struggle but also in the immediate and long term aftermath. The Germans were the first to punish Warsaw and its people for daring to defend its freedom. Hitler ordered the city to be all but wiped off the face of the earth and special units were brought in to systematically detonate any building of the remotest importance to Polish culture. The city was effectively destroyed block by block, and when the Russians finally crossed the Vistula to liberate the city, they inherited only ruins.

Later, in the years directly following the War, as the Poles tried to rebuild their shattered country under Communist leadership, it was forbidden to talk of the brave soldiers of the Uprising. The movement was denounced as illegal and every effort was made to slander those involved. Keen to behead Polish society of its heroes and intelligentsia Stalin sent many of the surviving members of the AK to Siberia for lengthy spells of hard labour, whilst he executed those whom he perceived as particularly dangerous. The fact that nobody was able to honour these brave soldiers for fifty odd years is partly why there is so much renewed interest in the Uprising today.

What Were They Fighting For?

One of the biggest question marks that hangs over the Warsaw Uprising is whether it should have happened at all. Even at the time there was much debate about whether to launch an attack on the Germans or to wait for the course of the War to run itself out. The Germans were already retreating across much of Europe with the Red Army liberating many former Nazi strongholds. Surely it was only a matter of time before they freed Warsaw?

Despite this the Uprising took place, not least because the Poles didn't trust Soviet intentions. This is hardly surprising when you bear in mind that, at the very time Hitler had invaded them from the West, Stalin had entered their territory from the East. In fact the Soviet-Nazi agreement to share Poland between them only ended when Hitler attacked Soviet forces, driving the Red Army out of Poland and making Russia a surprise ally to the British and Americans. In addition to remembering the aggressive behaviour of the Russians in 1939, there were also the recent revelations at Katyn - the cold blooded massacre of 15,000 Polish officers - which was being pinned (rightly it turned out) on the Russians. The Poles knew that if Russian, rather than Polish, troops were to liberate Warsaw, then it was highly probable that Poland's future would be no better than it was under Nazi rule. A fact that was tragically borne out by history.

Other Poles and advocates of the Uprising state that the reason for the insurgency had little bearing on what the Russians were or weren't doing - it was that they simply had to make some gesture of defiance to the Nazis and to fight for their freedom. If it was a 'gesture' then it was an expensive one. A quarter of a million civilians were killed and 85% of the city destroyed in the struggle which the Home Army brought upon themselves.

Regardless of whether the decision to rise up turned out to be a correct one, it's important for us today to recognise that the decision was made for the right reasons. There are few black and white issues in history but the struggle of Poles fighting for their freedom against the tyranny of German and imminent Russian oppression is as close as good vs. evil as you can get. Whether those deaths were in vain or not is entirely separate from the question of whether we should honour those that fought, suffered and died - the answer to which is unequivocally 'yes'.

Western Betrayal

There are those who blame the Western Allies for the failure of the Warsaw Uprising, and the subsequent pawning of Poland to Stalin and the Soviet Regime. They are not without reason. A few (mainly inaccurate) airdrops, made from long-range bases, were the only aid the members of the Uprising received from the Allies, who admittedly were being obstructed by the Russians at nearly every turn. In a telegram to Roosevelt, Churchill suggested launching aid missions in defiance of Stalin, but the American president sent the following response:

'I do not consider it advantageous to the long-range general war prospect for me to join you in the proposed message to Uncle Joe.'

Roosevelt didn't want to anger Stalin prior to the Yalta conference, in which amongst other things he planned to persuade Stalin to join the fight against Japan. It was at Yalta that the Western leaders made further concessions to Stalin, effectively allowing him to install a Communist government in Warsaw which was faithful to Moscow. They had previously agreed to Stalin's territorial acquisitions of Eastern Poland in the 1943 Teheran conference in Iran. The irony of sacrificing Poland to Stalin was of course that Britain had entered the War to save its Central European ally from Hitler. Freed from one tyrannical regime, she was being passed to an equally vicious one in the form of Stalin's Russia.

As early as 1943, at the Teheran conference held in Iran, Churchill and Roosevelt had agreed to Stalin's territorial acquisitions of Eastern Poland; meanwhile at Yalta the question of Poland was complicated by the fact that the Red Army already occupied Warsaw. The two Western Leaders agreed to allow Stalin's installed government to hold sway, effectively preventing the exiled Polish government (which had moved to London during the war) from returning to power and allowing Poland to become a Soviet satellite. Other Central European countries suffered similar fates whilst Estonia, Lithuania and Latvia were completely absorbed into the USSR.

Was this betrayal by the West? Or did Stalin simply hold all the trump cards? His army already occupied most of Europe and it was Russian forces that effectively won the War (despite what is portrayed by Hollywood and Western culture and education). It was Russian troops that had engaged 80% of the Nazi forces - and had lost a staggering 23 million men doing so - and this gave Stalin a very powerful hand at the negotiating table. Churchill in particular was suspicious of his Russian 'ally', but to fail to appease him could mean another war - a war that no one wanted and which Britain, America and the other Allies were unlikely to win. What's more America was more interested in securing Russian support against the Japanese in the East, which was a more important issue to them than the wranglings of post-war Europe.

Poland, and others, were certainly betrayed, but the real question is did the West have any other choice?

President Bush, during a speech in Latvia, recently described the negotiations of Yalta as an "attempt to sacrifice freedom for the sake of stability", and that "when powerful governments negotiated, the freedom of small nations was somehow expendable."

Well, that's cleared that up...

First Hand Accounts of the Warsaw Uprising

"I wasn't afraid because, frankly, one had little to lose. The occupation was awful. Anyway, we expected the Bolsheviks to help and the British to drop supplies, and we thought the Rising would end quickly." Wanda Gutowska.

"It was the heaviest fighting. Machine guns on all sides and terrible losses. But what I remember most was Tadeusz Araki, a brave boy, a good shot who sang beautifully and had a sense of humour. He was wounded in the stomach. We got to him with a stretcher, but a mortar hit, wounding the stretcher bearers and Araki a second time ... The hospital was so full of wounded men there was not space on the floor for him, but they did try to operate. I was called in. He was dying. Before he did, though, he asked me to say goodbye to the boys. I only cried twice during the Uprising and that was once." Dr. Halina Jedrzejewska recalls the day the Home Army took a school on the tactically crucial corridor of Stawki Street.

"Imagine what it felt like to live in areas held by the resistance. Never underestimate the everyday fear of occupation by the Nazis - and what it was like to be suddenly in a place that was free." Waclaw Gluth-Nowowieski.

"What went on was monstrous. The SS seized the director of a printing firm and his pregnant wife. They raped her in front of her husband, ripped out the unborn child with a bayonet, held it up for the father to see and finally killed him." Wanda Gutowska (re: Wola massacre).

"Imagine the scene: executions here, houses ablaze there - and then they burnt the bodies. You don't forget a smell like that." Edmund Baranowski (re: Wola massacre).

"Women were running with their babies and children, screaming and swearing at the Germans, and at us too, for making this happen." Zofia Dabrowska

"We were close to the Germans and they loved that tune, and when it finished, they'd shout: Friends, friends, play it again." Edmund Baranowski talking about 'Si Bonne' by Hanka Breczinska, which the Poles would play on their gramophone.

"We'd hold on as long as we could. Then, when we were about to lose our position, the survivors would fight a retreat or go into the sewers, to fight again." Edmund Baranowski.

"The canals, in my view, embody the worst of the Uprising. Imagine a narrow tunnel the shape of an egg, and having to run bow-legged with one foot on each inner shell of that egg, over sediment of toxic chemicals and decomposing bodies of the many who died down there, from suffocation or carbide gases the Germans used. Once, I was moving along and I got my foot caught in something. I tried to pull it away, but it was stuck in a decomposing body; when I got it free it was covered in rotten flesh." Stefan Baluk.

"We got completely lost - we should have gone north, but ended up east. I was half-blind and my wounds kept weeping. People began losing their nerve. The first sewer was small and round, some 80 cm by 70 cm, so the able-bodied crawled on hands and knees in the filth, with the person in front pulling the stretcher and the one behind pushing it. The worst thing was the panic. We were terrified the SS would put gas or grenades or electricity into the sewers. The manhole covers were open and we could hear German voices outside." "We did not only grow up quickly during those days, we grew old. At first it was a big adventure. But we hadn't thought what it would be like to see your comrades lying on the ground, their entrails lying beside them, begging their friends to kill them, to put them out of their pain." Zofia Dabrowska

"There was rubble everywhere,nowhere to hide - just imagine us, children, dragging this box of ammunition in the warm morning sun. Then we saw a medical orderly being carried by two other soldiers, both his legs torn off and dangling from his waist, blood covering the two men who were helping." Wanda Olkoska-Wolkonowski

"They always told us you don't feel pain, but they are wrong. Jadwiga was hit in the head and stomach and I from the waist down. I lay there until a boy scout came by. I told him: 'Take the order to command, and send help.' It was the worst night of my life - shooting-flashes-darkness; shooting-flashes-darkness, and the pain. At last they took me to hospital, but there was no room - I had to go to the cellar, where I was the only person not to die from blood poisoning. They gave me medicine as a special treatment, maybe because I was a young girl. I got gangrene, though, and on 17 September they amputated my leg. By now, I was alone. All my friends had been killed. That is how it was. You would talk to someone one day, and the next day they would be dead." Wanda Olkoska-Wolkonowski.

"The attitude of the civilians changed. In the last places to hold out, people knew what had happened in Wola, in the Old Town, and they were terrified of the Nazis. Those who supported everything we did at the start were now tired - tired of having no food, water or light, tired of the killing." Dr. Halina Jedrzejewska.

"By the end of September, the civilians were exhausted. They had had enough of the Uprising. They were concerned for their lives and the lives of their families. They couldn't take it any more. So on 30 September, Warsaw fell silent. The Germans came out of their bunkers. We came out from our barricades. We stared at each other in amazement. We shared cigarettes. We asked, 'What is going on? What happens next?'" Edmund Baranowski.

"I managed to escape from prison camp, but when I got back to Warsaw, I couldn't believe the destruction. There was nothing left of my city. Everyone I knew had vanished. I was walking alone, by the Vistula, and a single figure came towards me, as lost as me. I recognised him. It was a clerk who had organised a loan for me. We saw each other and embraced, amazed to see a familiar face in such a place as Warsaw was then." Pan Bartelski.

Szelest Spadających Papierków - Rascheln fallender Papiere (2011)

W zamierzchłych czasach tego bloga prezentowaliśmy już Szelest Spadających Papierków. Zespół wydał właśnie nową płytę jest więc okazja by przypomnieć o tej kapeli.

Niegdyś (lata 80/90) była to grupa zupełnie niesubordynowana, o płynnym składzie i zmiennym instrumentarium (muzycy często niszczyli lub gubili instrumenty po szaleńczych koncertach). W 2008 roku odrodziła się za sprawą Szymona Albrzykowskiego i Sławka 'Oziego' Żamojdy. W obecnym składzie SSP to zwarty noisowy duet serwujący abstrakcyjną nie-muzykę przy użyciu analogowego generatora (syntezatora) znanego m.in. także z Prawatta i KSAS oraz zestawu Game-Boy’ów. W obecnym składzie grupa nagrała jeden album studyjny i dwa koncertowe.

Szelest Spadających Papierków XXI wieku to szelest cybernetycznych stosów. Nie daje wytchnienia, ani ukojenia. To abstrakcyjny galimatias ośmiobitowych retro-dźwięków zapomnianej konsoli Nintendo zaplątany w gąszcz generatorowych pisków, zgrzytów i warkotów.

Tu nie ma nawet namiastki melodii. Jest cybernetyczny trans, do którego główkami ruszają kondensatory i diody. To dyskoteka dla kserokopiarek i niszczarek dokumentów. Albo zestaw ulubionych mruczanek robota R2D2. Jakkolwiek ująć to w słowa – jedno jest pewne: to propozycja radykalna. Tylko dla największych śmiałków Kosmosu.

Zapisali się w historii muzyki rozrywkowej m.in. tym, że spalili sprzęt nagłośnieniowy w Lipsku i gdańskiej Łaźni. W klubie Buffet ich koncert został przerwany, bowiem szklanki spadały z półek na głowy barmanów i barmanek. Tomek Żukowski (perkusista m.in. Biafro), który siedział w tym czasie na kolumnie sub-basowej, przeżywał stany ekstatyczne.

Ostatnie koncerty Szelestu zawierają nieco więcej utworów "balladowych", pojawiają się sample.

Trochę prehistorii:

W latach osiemdziesiątych SSP grał sporo koncertów, przede wszystkim na imprezach organizowanych przez środowisko totartalne. Przyniosły one niszową sławę zespołowi, który objawił się jako przykład rewolucyjnego i radykalnego podejścia do materii muzycznej.

Znakami charakterystycznymi Szelestu z tamtych czasów były: prowokacja, awangarda i muzyczna destrukcja. Koncerty grupy były wydarzeniami o charakterze bardziej happeningowym niż muzycznym. Członkowie zespołu często przebierali się w najbardziej niespodziewane stroje, między utworami odczytywali manifesty. Bardzo często muzyka schodziła na drugi plan, wydawała się tylko dodatkiem. Szelest grał w tamtych czasach bardzo chaotyczny, ekstremalny hałas, inspirując się dość wyraźnie dokonaniami zachodniej awangardy i bardzo wówczas silnego nurtu industrialnego. Koncerty SSP kończyły się regularnie niszczeniem instrumentów i interwencjami służb bezpieczeństwa.

Kryzys Totartu i Pomarańczowej Alternatywy dotknął także i Szelest. Trapiony problemami personalnymi i zdrowotnymi członków grupy zespół zniknął na dłuższy czas. Pod koniec lat dziewięćdziesiątych grupa reaktywowała się, by w październiku 1999 roku zarejestrować album koncertowy o nazwie „Płyta Redłowska”. W gdańskim klubie Plama spotkali się wówczas: Joanna Charchan (saksofon altowy), Krzysztof Siemak (gitara i pętle), Paweł Końjo Konnak (zlewiny liryczne), Sławomir Ozi Żamojda (gitara), Szymon Albrzykowski (bas) , Tomasz Ballaun (perkusjonalia).

Przemysław Gulda napisał o „Płycie Redłowskiej”:

Zespół gra dość spokojną muzykę, opartą w dużej mierze na elektronicznie generowanych pętlach rytmicznych, będących bazą dla improwizowanych partii gitary i saksofonu. To transowa, przez większą część płyty wyciszona muzyka, co zabrzmieć może szokująco dla tych, którzy pamiętają zespół sprzed lat. Pewien niepokój wprowadzają fragmenty, w których pojawiający się zawsze na koncertach zespołu Paweł Konnak recytuje swe najnowsze, refleksyjne wiersze.

Nowy album SSP to zapis dwóch koncertów, które odbyły się w 2010 roku. Pierwszy z nich miał miejsce podczas katowickiego OFF Festiwalu, drugi zaś podczas Moving Closer w Warszawie. Prócz dwóch filarów obecnego wcielenia SSP (czyli Szymona Albrzykowskiego i Sławka "Oziego" Żamojdy), na płycie można usłyszeć także Krzysztofa Siemaka (gitara), który powoli wraca do składu Szelestu oraz kontrabasistę Rafała Piekarskiego.

Choć Szelest na żywo robi piekielne wrażenie, za każdym razem przymierzając się do spalenia wszystkich wzmacniaczy, rozerwania kolumn i stopienia lutów, paradoksalnie ta płyta brzmi dość łagodnie. Szymon i Ozi pozostawili sporo miejsca na solo kontrabasu (a wiadomo, że ten instrument potrzebuje dużo miejsca). Jest dużo plam dźwiękowych, spod powierzchni których próbują się co rusz wydobyć różne struktury soniczne. Czasami są to enigmatyczne rozmowy w obcych językach, czasem rozstrojone pomrukiwanie automatu perkusyjnego Szymona, jeszcze kiedy indziej piskliwe i niepokojące ośmiobitowe emisje Sławkowych GameBoyów.

W zasadzie tylko na pierwszych dwóch utworach (z Katowic) słychać atmosferę koncertu. Słychać odgłosy publiczności, mamy też oszczędny dialog (a raczej monolog) Szymona ze słuchaczami. Pozostałe brzmią niemal jak utwory studyjne. Takie to szelestowe ballady na triodę i opornik.

SSP w genialnie swój sposób emituje dźwięki, które brzmią, jakby próbowali zgrać cały internet i odtworzyć go w ciągu kilkudziesięciu minut. To nie muzyka - to doświadczenie. (materiał zaczerpnięty z Nasiono Records)

Friedensreich Hundertwasser (1928-2000)

Friedensreich Hundertwasser, właściwie Friedrich Stowasser urodził się 15 grudnia 1928 w Wiedniu, a zmarł 19 lutego 2000 roku.

Ten jeden z najbardziej kontrowersyjnych twórców minionego stulecia, nazywany był „królem o pięciu skórach”. Według Hundertwassera każdy człowiek ma pięć skór: skórę naturalną, ubranie, dom, środowisko społeczne i planetę, które odkrywa w poszczególnych etapach swojego życia.

W roku 1953 po raz pierwszy w pracach Hundertwassera pojawia się charakterystyczny element jego późniejszej twórczości, mianowicie spirala. Friedensreich Hundertwasser nienawidził linii prostej, uważał ją za niemoralną i bezbożną, co wiele razy podkreślał w swoich przemówieniach, manifestach i happeningach. Hundertwassera używał bardzo niekonwencjonalnych i radykalnych metod do zilustrowania swoich poglądów, co spotykało się często z zupełnym brakiem zrozumienia i ostrą krytyką.

W jednym ze swoich manifestów: „Prawo Twojego okna – Twój obowiązek wobec drzewa”, Hundertwasser zwracał się do ludzi kreatywnych: Masz prawo kształtować swój własny gust, tak daleko jak sięga Twoja ręka, Twoje okno czy fasada. Artysta uważał, że ulice i dachy powinny być zadrzewione, ponieważ w miastach powinna być możliwość oddychania powietrzem z lasów. Uważał, że człowiek powinien żyć w zgodzie z naturą.

Rada miejska Wiednia zwróciła się do Hundertwassera z prośbą o wybudowanie domów komunalnych na rogu Lowegasse. Wcześniej Hundertwasser często malował domy, które później znajdowały odzwierciedlenie w rzeczywistości. Charakterystyczne elementy architektury Hundertwassera to przede wszystkim: nieregularnie umiejscowione okna, barokowe kolumnady, kopuły, kolorowe mozaiki, a także obowiązkowa obecność roślinności w przestrzeniach architektonicznych. W jego domach każde mieszkanie miało inny kolor, każde było odrębną, niezależną częścią całości. W budynku, oprócz mieszkań, znalazły się także: gabinet lekarski, pralnia, sala zabaw dla dzieci, sklepy, restauracja, kawiarnia i oczywiście tarasy leśne, a także ogród zimowy. Każdy dom liczył 50 mieszkań. Dzień otwarcia domów stworzonych przez Hundertwassera zaplanowano na 8 września 1985 roku. Już pierwszego dnia w kolejce do zwiedzania ustawiło się 70 000 chętnych. Dom ów stał się symbolem postmodernistycznego Wiednia.

Przez kolejne 15 lat Hundertwasser wykonał około pięćdziesięciu projektów, z czego połowa została zrealizowana.Oprócz budynków mieszkalnych Hundertwasser na swoim koncie ma projekt spalarni śmieci i miejskiej ciepłowni w Spittelau (1988-1992). Ciekawostką jest fakt, iż poziom dwutlenku węgla, który uwalnia elektrownia, wynosi zaledwie 0,1g na rok. Zainteresowanie technologiami ekologicznymi i energooszczędnymi spowodowało, że jego projekty powstawały w oparciu o firmy posiadające odpowiednie materiały budowlane, jak YTONG i SILKA firmy Xella.

W grudniu 1999 roku połączono na lini wschód-zachód miasta Uelzen i Stendal. Wilheliamski dworzec i perony z 1888 roku zostały gruntownie przeprojektowane przez Friedensreicha Hundertwassera. Celem było stworzenie obiektu atrakcyjnego artystycznie i funkcjonalnego ekologicznie.

Niesamowitym projektem Hundertwassera była wioska w Blumau, we wschodniej Styrii. Otwarta została 10 maja 1997 roku. Praca nad tym projektem trwała 7 lat. Wioska jest przykładem idealnej harmonii między człowiekiem a naturą. Ma powierzchnię 35 hektarów, 250 pokoi, 2 baseny, 5 łaźni termalnych. Miejsce do spacerów znajduje się na terenie całego kompleksu, łącznie z trawiastymi dachami. W Blumau znajduje się 5 typów domów: dom-kopiec, dom z trawiastym dachem, dom-fosa, dom-taras oraz dom-łąka. W marcu 1998 Hundertwasser otrzymał nagrodę zasług specjalnych dla turystyki przyznawaną przez Związek Niemieckich Dziennikarzy Turystycznych.

Dom fundacji Ronald McDonald w Grugapark w Essen był ostatnim projektem Friedensreicha Hundertwassera. Faliste kształty, bogactwo kolorów, naturalne zaokrąglenia, łąka na dachu. Wygląda, jakby dosłownie wyrósł pośród niewielkich zielonych pagórków. Dom Ronald McDonald jest jednak dziełem ludzkiej ręki. Do jego budowy użyto materiałów SILKA i YTONG.

Pomysł połączenia działalności fundacji Ronald McDonald z wyrafinowaną estetyką Hundertwassera narodził się w roku 1999, gdy Manfred Welzel, dyrektor niemieckiej McDonalds Kinderhilfe zobaczył projekty architektoniczne Hundertwassera. Welzel spytał artystę, czy byłoby możliwe zbudowanie takiego domu w Essen, który następnie sam wybrał spośród wielu propozycji Grunapark jako lokalizację. Hundertwasserowi spodobało się przypominające krater ukształtowanie terenu. Chronione położenie odpowiadać miało potrzebom rodzin szukających azylu i poczucia bezpieczeństwa.

Wśród firm wspierających realizację projektu Hudnertwassera znalazła się również Xella. Gdy Jan Buck Emden, ówczesny dyrektor Xella Kalksteine GmbH, dowiedział się na jednej z imprez dobroczynnych o planach wybudowania domu przy Klinice Uniwersyteckiej w Essen, spontanicznie obiecał fundacji Ronald McDonald wsparcie w postaci materiałów budowlanych o wartości 10.000 euro. Połowę tej kwoty przeznaczono na bloczki SILKA a drugą połowę na bloczki YTONG – znakomite fundamenty dla domu, którego mury w całości wykonano z produktów Xella, produktów odzwierciedlających społeczne, ekologiczne i energooszczędne oczekiwania współczesnego społeczeństwa.

Można by pomyśleć, że postawienie takiego niezwykłego, cechującego się indywidualizmem domu było wyjątkowo skomplikowanym przedsięwzięciem. W końcu indywidualność nie jest głównym wyróżnikiem bloczków budowlanych, które nie są ani nierówne, ani kolorowe a wprost przeciwnie – perfekcyjnie wymierzone i jednakowe. Bloczki YTONG i SILKA udowodniły jednak, że można z nich zbudować nawet „krzywe” domy, nawet łącząc je w autorskim Systemie 20 cm Xella.

Ostatni projekt Friedensreicha Hundertwassera wykonany z materiałów Xella na pewno przejdzie do historii. Ten niezwykły i radośnie kolorowy dom powstał jednak z bardzo poważnego powodu. Jest on tymczasowym miejscem pobytu dla rodzin ciężko chorych dzieci leczonych w Klinice Uniwersyteckiej w Essen. Fundacja Ronald McDonald stworzyła ten dom, wychodząc ze słusznego założenia, że w czasie choroby nic nie jest dzieciom potrzebne bardziej, niż bliskość i wsparcie rodziców oraz rodzeństwa. Fundacja prowadzi w Niemczech 15 takich domów, ale ten w Essen jest szczególny. Zamiast linii prostych dominują tutaj łuki i krzywizny a fasada przypomina nieregularną kolorową mozaikę. Każde ze 148 okien jest inne. Nawet podłogi nie są tutaj zupełnie płaskie - gdzieniegdzie ozdobiono je płytkami, które przedstawiają kałuże i liście. Friedensreich Regentag Dunkelbunt Hundertwasser (December 15, 1928 – February 19, 2000) was a Jewish Austrian painter and architect. Born Friedrich Stowasser in Vienna, he became one of the best-known contemporary Austrian artists, although controversial, by the end of the 20th century.

Hundertwasser's father Ernst Stowasser died three months after Hunderwasser's first birthday. The Second World War was a hard time for Hundertwasser and his mother Elsa, as she was Jewish. They avoided persecution by posing as Christians, a credible ruse because Hundertwasser's father had been a Catholic. To remain inconspicuous, Hundertwasser joined the Hitler Youth.

Hundertwasser developed artistic skills very early. After the war, he spent three months at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. At this time he began to sign his art as Hundertwasser instead of Stowasser. He left to travel, using a small set of paints he carried at all times to sketch anything that caught his eye. In Florence he met the young French painter René Brô for the first time; they became lifelong friends. Hundertwasser's first commercial painting success was in 1952-3 with an exhibition in Vienna.

His adopted surname is based on the translation of "sto"(the Slavic word for "one hundred") into German. The name Friedensreich has a double meaning as "Peaceland" or "Peacerich" (in the sense of "peaceful"). The other names he chose for himself, Regentag and Dunkelbunt, translate to "Rainy day" and "Darkly multicoloured". His name Friedensreich Hundertwasser means, "Peace-Kingdom Hundred-Water". Hundertwasser married Herta Leitner in 1958 but they divorced two years later. He married again in 1962 but was divorced by 1966. By this point he was very popular with his art.

He moved into architecture from the early 1950s. Hundertwasser also worked in the field of applied art, creating flags, stamps, coins, and posters. His most famous flag is the Koru Flag. As well as postage stamps for the Austrian Post Office, he also designed stamps for the Cape Verde islands and for the United Nations postal administration in Geneva on the occasion of the 35th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Hundertwasser was buried in New Zealand after his death at sea on the RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 in 2000, at the age of 71.

Hundertwasser's original and unruly artistic vision expressed itself in pictorial art, environmentalism, philosophy, and design of facades, postage stamps, flags, and clothing (among other areas). The common themes in his work utilised bright colours, organic forms, a reconciliation of humans with nature, and a strong individualism, rejecting straight lines.

He remains sui generis, although his architectural work is comparable to Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926) in its use of biomorphic forms and the use of tile. He was also inspired by the art of the Vienna Secession, and by the Austrian painters Egon Schiele (1890–1918) and Gustav Klimt (1862–1918).

He was fascinated by spirals, and called straight lines "the devil's tools". He called his theory of art "transautomatism", based on Surrealist automatism, but focusing on the experience of the viewer, rather than the artist.

Although Hundertwasser first achieved notoriety for his boldly-coloured paintings, he is more widely known for his individual architectural designs. These designs use irregular forms, and incorporate natural features of the landscape. The Hundertwasserhaus apartment block in Vienna has undulating floors ("an uneven floor is a melody to the feet"), a roof covered with earth and grass, and large trees growing from inside the rooms, with limbs extending from windows. He took no payment for the design of Hundertwasserhaus, declaring that the investment was worth it to "prevent something ugly from going up in its place".

From the early 1950s he increasingly focused on architecture. This began with manifestos, essays and demonstrations. For example, he read out his "Mouldiness Manifesto against Rationalism in Architecture" in 1958 on the occasion of an art and architectural event held at the Seckau Monastery. In Munich in 1967 he gave a lecture called "Speech in Nude for the Right to a Third Skin". His lecture "Loose from Loos, A Law Permitting Individual Buildings Alterations or Architecture-Boycott Manifesto", was given at the Concordia Press Club in Vienna in 1968.

In the Mouldiness Manifesto he first claimed the "Window Right": "A person in a rented apartment must be able to lean out of his window and scrape off the masonry within arm's reach. And he must be allowed to take a long brush and paint everything outside within arm's reach. So that it will be visible from afar to everyone in the street that someone lives there who is different from the imprisoned, enslaved, standardised man who lives next door." In his nude speeches of 1967 and 1968 Hundertwasser condemned the enslavement of humans by the sterile grid system of conventional architecture and by the output of mechanised industrial production. He rejected rationalism, the straight line and functional architecture.

For Hundertwasser, human misery was a result of the rational, sterile, monotonous architecture, built following the tradition of the Austrian architect Adolf Loos, author of the modernist manifesto Ornament and crime (1908). He called for a boycott of this type of architecture, and demanded instead creative freedom of building, and the right to create individual structures. In 1972 he published the manifesto Your window right — your tree duty. Planting trees in an urban environment was to become obligatory: "If man walks in nature's midst, then he is nature's guest and must learn to behave as a well-brought-up guest."

In the 1970s, Hundertwasser had his first architectural models built. The models for the Eurovision TV-show "Wünsch Dir was" (Make a Wish) in 1972 exemplified his ideas on forested roofs, tree tenants and the window right. In these and similar models he developed new architectural shapes, such as the spiral house, the eye-slit house, the terrace house and the high-rise meadow house. In 1974, Peter Manhardt made models for him of the pit house, the grass roof house and the green service station – along with his idea of the invisible, inaudible Green Motorway.

In the early 1980s Hundertwasser remodelled the Rosenthal Factory in Selb, and the Mierka Grain Silo in Krems. These projects gave him the opportunity to act as what he called an "architecture doctor".

In architectural projects that followed he implemented window right and tree tenants, uneven floors, woods on the roof, and spontaneous vegetation. Works of this period include: housing complexes in Germany; a church in Bärnbach, Austria; a district heating plant in Vienna; an incineration plant and sludge centre in Osaka, Japan; a railway station in Uelzen; a winery in Napa Valley; and a public toilet in Kawakawa.

Opisy nie będą zbyt obszerne. Prezentowana płyta jest rejestracją jednorazowego koncertu, który odbył się w Collage Of Marin Country niedaleko San Francisco w 1969 roku. W tym swoistym jam session wzięło udział mnóstwo znakomitych muzyków z grup Linn County, Shades of Joy, Sir Douglas Quintet, Group Therapy oraz Harvey Mandel.

Not too much to say about this excellent album. This Lp was recorded in the spring of ’69 at an outdoor gig at the College of Marin County near San Francisco, CA. The members of the Buddy Miles Express, Sir Douglas Quintet, Linn County, McCoys, Shades of Joy, Group Therapy, plus Harvey Mandel and Eddie Hoh decided to do a spontaneous jam. Jarocin w obiektywie bezpieki

Podczas pracy nad tą publikacją staraliśmy się nie tylko przedstawić zakres inwigilacji i specyfikę esbeckich źródeł, ale próbowaliśmy ukazać ten problem w szerszym tle społecznym. Dotarliśmy do muzyków, organizatorów festiwali i ówczesnych decydentów - Tomasz Toborek (IPN)

Pracownicy IPN w Łodzi odnaleźli na początku 2004 r. materiały operacyjne organów bezpieczeństwa, dotyczące festiwalu rockowego w Jarocinie. Ponieważ odnalezione teczki zawierały dużą ilość interesujących fotografii, zdecydowano się na wydanie publikacji – albumu „Jarocin w obiektywie bezpieki”. Wspomniana publikacja spotkała się z ogromnym zainteresowaniem. Podczas pracy nad nią starano się nie tylko przedstawić zakres inwigilacji i specyfikę SB-ckich źródeł, ale także ukazano problem na szerszym tle społecznym, docierając do muzyków, organizatorów festiwalu i ówczesnych decydentów. Opisano zmagania muzyków z cenzurą, ich stanowisko wobec przemian w kraju, stosunek do polityki i PRL-owskiej rzeczywistości. Rozmawiano z muzykami zespołów: Dezerter, Moskwa, Brygada Kryzys, Abbadon, T’Love, z organizatorem festiwalu Walterem Chełstowskim i ówczesnymi ministrami kultury: Kazimierzem Żygulskim i Józefem Tejchmą. W albumie znalazły się też wycinki prasowe, teksty utworów i reprodukcje plakatów i folderów festiwalowych. Publikacja ukazała się w grudniu 2004 r.

Kontynuacją wykonanych wówczas prac jest wystawa, nosząca taki sam tytuł jak album. Składają się na nią fotografie ze zbiorów IPN – z zachowanymi oryginalnymi podpisami funkcjonariuszy SB. Ekspozycję uzupełniono zdjęciami łódzkiego fotografika Tomasza Barasińskiego. Prezentowane są także wydawnictwa związane z festiwalem – foldery, znaczki, plakaty. Wystawa składa się z dwóch części. Prezentuje historię imprezy i jej charakter – począwszy od Wielkopolskich Rytmów Młodych aż do 1994 r. Przedstawione materiały opatrzone są komentarzem i podpisami. Ukazane jest także życie miasta podczas festiwalu, wydarzenia na scenie oraz jarocińska publiczność.

W albumie opublikowane zostały zdjęcia ze zbiorów Archiwum IPN w Łodzi i Muzeum Regionalnego w Jarocinie, wykorzystano także prace niezależnego fotografa Tomasza Barasińskiego oraz zdjęcia ze zbiorów prywatnych.

Oprócz materiałów ikonograficznych w albumie opublikowano 21 dokumentów ze zbiorów Archiwum IPN.

W pracach nad przygotowaniem albumu uczestniczyli historycy z IPN - dr Krzysztof Lesiakowski, dr Tomasz Toborek oraz Paweł Perzyna. Graficznie album opracował Andrzej Rosołek.

Klan - Mrowisko (1971)

Klan – polski zespół muzyczny założony w 1969 w Warszawie, jedna z pierwszych polskich grup, którym udało się zerwać z domowym bigbitem i muzyką nawiązać do czołowych osiągnięć rocka progresywnego.

Pierwszy skład grupy to Marek Ałaszewski (ur. 2 grudnia 1942 w Warszawie) (gitara i śpiew), Roman Pawelski (gitara basowa), Andrzej Poniatowski (eks. Pesymiści) (instrumenty perkusyjne) i Maciej Głuszkiewicz (instrumenty klawiszowe).

Zespół debiutował w warszawskim klubie "Medyk" i wkrótce zwrócił na siebie uwagę dzięki interesującej, progresywnej muzyce i surrealistycznym tekstom, choć Ałaszewskiemu zarzucano czasami kopiowanie stylu wokalnego Niemena. Zespół nagrał kilka interesujących piosenek i wydał swoją pierwszą płytę EP Klan. Najważniejszą jednak płytą zespołu jest ich druga płyta zatytułowana Mrowisko, muzyka napisana do spektaklu baletowego o tym samym tytule. Mrowisko jest powszechnie uznawane za jedną z żelaznych pozycji polskiego kanonu rockowego.

Po nagraniu ich drugiej płyty z zespołu odeszli Głuszkiewicz i Poniatowski, a zastąpili ich Krzysztof Dłutowski (eks-Dzikusy, Blackout, Breakout, Pięciu) oraz perkusista Wojciech Morawski. Zespół koncertował z materiałem z Mrowiska jeszcze do sierpnia tego samego roku i wkrótce potem rozpadł się.

Klan wznowił działalność w 1991 w składzie Marek Ałaszewski, Artur Łobanowski (gitara, instrumenty klawiszowe), Wojciech Ruciński (gitara basowa) i Radosław Nowakowski (perkusja, eks-Osjan), i rok później nagrał drugą płytę długogrającą Po co mi ten raj. Zespół promował ją koncertami w Polsce, po czym zawiesił działalność.

W roku 2008 lider zespołu ponownie reaktywował Klan (najpierw pod nazwą Marek Ałaszewski Band). Obecnie (2010) prócz Marka Ałaszewskiego w zespole grają: jego syn, również Marek (śpiew, gitara basowa), Jacek Kępka (śpiew, gitara), Paweł Jedliński (śpiew, perkusja) oraz Piotr Gąssowski (gitara). Grupa przygotowuje nowy album, zatytułowany "Laufer". Pierwsze koncerty ukazujące nowy materiał, odbyły się już w lipcu 2010. Na nowy album zespołu Klan składać się będzie siedem całkowicie nowych kompozycji, oraz nowa wersja utworu "Should be", znana z wydania "Po co mi ten raj".

Planowana premiera nagrań, które powstają w analogowym studio "The Rolling Tapes" w Srebrnej Górze, odbędzie się w maju 2011 r. Realizacją i masteringiem płyty zajął się Marek Szwarc. (wikipedia)

Klan were a Warsaw fusion quartet born in 1969 and headed by guitarist/vocalist Marek Allaszewski. His mates were keyboard player Maciej Gluszkiewicz, bassist Roman Pawelski and drummer Andrzej Poniatowski. Their music had a remarkably mature psychedelic sound for a band from an Eastern-Block country in the early 70's - somewhat in the vein of Vanilla Fudge albeit slightly less heavy and more melodic.

After releasing a self-titled E.P. in 1970, lyricist Marian Skolarski joined the band and composed a ballet called "Mrowisko", their best release todate. It is a majestic, flowing psychedelic concept with a very undergorund feel, full acid leads and fuzz-guitar solos, some violin and some jazzy parts. The songs are well constructed (vocals are in Polish) and the musicianship is quite good. Both the LP and the EP are now collectable items but have thankfully been reissued on a single CD in 2000. In 1993, Allaszewski reformed KLAN who released an album called "Po Co Mi Ten Raj". Perhaps due to the time lapse, it doesn't quite have the punch of the amazing "Mrowisko".

Fans of early psych prog will be amazed at the maturity of this band's early material. The compilation CD "Mrowisko + EP" is definitely recommended. (progarchives)

Arvo Pärt - Tabula rasa (1984)

Arvo Pärt urodził się 11 września 1935 roku w Paide – miasteczku położonym niedaleko miasta Tallinn – stolicy Estonii.

Edukację muzyczną rozpoczął w 1954 roku w Liceum Muzycznym w Tallinnie. W 1957 roku rozpoczął naukę w Konserwatorium w Tallinnie. Studiował tam kompozycję pod kierunkiem profesora Heino Ellera. Pärt pracował jako realizator nagrań w Estońskim Radiu oraz pisał muzykę do sztuk, jak również do wielu filmów. Już w 1963 roku, gdy ukończył Konserwatorium, uznawano go za profesjonalnego kompozytora. Rok wcześniej zdobył pierwszą nagrodę w Konkursie Młodych Kompozytorów Republik Związkowych za swoją kantatę z udziałem dziecięcego chóru pt. Nasz ogród oraz za oratorium pt. Postęp Świata.

Żyjąc w Związku Radzieckim, Pärt miał utrudniony dostęp do współczesnej muzyki zachodniej. Mimo to, na początku lat 60. do Estonii dotarło wiele nowych technik kompozycyjnych. Pärt był jednym z pierwszych kompozytorów, którzy wykorzystywali je w swojej pracy.

Oficjalna krytyka muzyki Pärta była skrajnie różna. Niektóre z jego dzieł wychwalano, a wykonania innych zakazano. Tak było z utworem Credo (1968). Był to jego ostatni kolaż muzyczny. Po jego ukończeniu, Pärt zdecydował się na zawieszenie swojej pracy. Była to pierwsza z wielu przerw, podczas których rozmyślał, jak również studiował dzieła tworzących od XIV do XVI wieku francuskich i franko-flamandzkich kompozytorów muzyki chóralnej, takich jak Machaut, Ockeghem, Obrecht i Josquin. Dla Pärta rozpoczął się okres wytężonej pracy. Fratres, Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten oraz Tabula Rasa – te trzy spośród dzieł napisanych w 1977 roku są nadal uważane za jedne z najwybitniejszych w jego twórczości. W 1980 roku Pärt wyjechał z Estonii do Wiednia, gdzie przyjął austriackie obywatelstwo. Rok później otrzymał stypendium i wyjechał na wymianę studencką do Berlina Zachodniego, w którym mieszka do dziś.

Od wyjazdu z Estonii, Pärt skoncentrował się głównie na pisaniu utworów religijnych, popularnych wśród chórów i orkiestr z całego świata.

Arvo Pärt was born in Paide, Estonia, a small town near Tallinn, the country's capital, on 11 September 1935. In 1944, Estonia saw the occupation of the Soviet Union, which would last for over 50 years, and would have a profound effect on his life and music.

His musical studies began in 1954 at the Tallinn Music Secondary School, interrupted less than a year later while he fulfilled his National Service obligation as oboist and side-drummer in an army band. He returned to Middle School for a year before joining the Tallinn Conservatory in 1957, where his composition teacher was Professor Heino Eller. Pärt started work as a recording engineer with Estonian Radio, wrote music for the stage and received numerous commissions for film scores so that, by the time he graduated from the Conservatory in 1963, he could already be considered a professional composer. A year before leaving, he won first prize in the All-Union Young Composers' Competition for a children's cantata, Our Garden, and an oratorio, Stride of the World.

Living in the old Soviet Union, Pärt had little access to what was happening in contemporary Western music but, despite such isolation, the early 1960s in Estonia saw many new methods of composition being brought into use and Pärt was at the fore front. His Nekrolog was the first Estonian composition to employ serial technique. He continued with serialism through to the mid 60s in pieces such as the Symphony No. 1, Symphony No. 2 and Perpetuum Mobile, but ultimately tired of its rigours and moved on to experiment, in works such as Collage über BACH, with collage techniques.

Official judgement of Pärt's music veered between extremes, with certain works being praised and others, like the Credo of 1968, being banned. This would prove to be the last of his collage pieces and after its composition, Pärt chose to enter the first of several periods of contemplative silence, also using the time to study French and Franco-Flemish choral music from the 14th to 16th centuries: Machaut, Ockeghem, Obrecht, Josquin. At the very beginning of the 1970s, he wrote a few transitional compositions in the spirit of early European polyphony, like his Symphony No. 3 from 1971.

Pärt turned again to self-imposed silence, but re-emerged in 1976 after a transformation so radical as to make his previous music almost unrecognisable as that of the same composer. The technique he invented, or discovered, and to which he has remained loyal, practically without exception, he calls "tintinnabuli" (from the Latin, little bells), which he describes thus: "I have discovered that it is enough when a single note is beautifully played. This one note, or a silent beat, or a moment of silence, comforts me. I work with very few elements —with one voice, two voices. I build with primitive materials —with the triad, with one specific tonality. The three notes of a triad are like bells and that is why I call it tintinnabulation." The basic guiding principle behind tintinnabulation of composing two simultaneous voices as one line —one voice moving stepwise from and to a central pitch, first up then down, and the other sounding the notes of the triad— made its first public appearance in the short piano piece, Für Alina.

Having found his voice, there was a subsequent rush of new works and three of the 1977 pieces —Fratres, Cantus in Memoriam Benjamin Britten and Tabula Rasa— are still amongst his most highly regarded. As Pärt's music began to be performed in the west and he continued to struggle against Soviet officialdom, his frustration ultimately forced him, his wife Nora and their two sons, to emigrate in 1980. They never made it to their intended destination of Israel but, with the assistance of his publisher in the West, settled firstly in Vienna, where he took Austrian citizenship. One year later, with a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange, he moved to West Berlin where he still lives.

Since leaving Estonia, Pärt has concentrated on setting religious texts, which have proved popular with choirs and ensembles around the world. Among his champions in the West have been Manfred Eicher's ECM Records who released the first recordings of Pärt's music outside the Soviet bloc, Paul Hillier's Hilliard Ensemble who have premiered several of the vocal works and Neeme Järvi, a long time collaborator of Pärt who conducted the premiere of Credo in Tallinn in 1968 and has, as well as recording the tintinnabuli pieces, introduced Pärt's earlier compositions through performances and recordings.

Pärt's achievements were honoured in his 61st year by his election to the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He was nominated as 14th International Composer for the year 2000 by the Royal Academy of Music in London. In May 2003, he also received the "Contemporary Music Award" at the Classical Brit Awards ceremony at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

11 September 2010 was the date of Arvo Pärt's 75th birthday. As a homage to the composer, the Arvo Pärt Festival 2010 took place in several Estonian towns. (arvopart.info)
