VA - Hungry Krauts, Daddy!: German Psychedelic Underground 1968-1974

Like its predecessor, Kraut! Demons! Kraut! this is a label-less CD compilation, probably unauthorized but with reasonably good sound quality and annotation, of rare vintage Krautrock. As is the case with such specialist collector series, the quality dips down a bit as you get into the second volume, but it's basically comparable in style and merit to the first installment. And like Kraut! Demons! Kraut! it's more in the psychedelic style than it is in the progressive, electronic sound identified with more well-known Krautrock bands. Sometimes the reference points to famous British and American acts are clear, though the execution is often eccentric and stiff, albeit sometimes in a likable way. Staff Carpenborg & the Electric Corona, for instance, sound like an unholy mating of the Crazy World of Arthur Brown with the very early (Daevid Allen-era) Soft Machine. Motherhood offers a too-brief slice of raga-rock with "Negrito; " Gottfried von Hungsberg gets into fierce distorted electronics with "Die Insel," which will be more to the liking of party-liners who want the "classic" sort of Krautrock weirdness; "Golgatha" offers cheesy but charming Gregorian chant-cum-psychedelia, like a Teutonic variation of the Yardbirds' "Glimpses"; the John Bassman Group, actually from just over the German border in Holland, offer some variety with a strident female vocalist. Lots of Can members were involved in the rare 1968 single by Inner Space, the only track to feature famous musicians. (allmusic)
