VA - Australia: Songs of the Aborigines and Music of Papua, New Guinea (1993)

Two distinct musical cultures of the Australian Aborigines are documented in this recording: that of the Cape York peninsula in north Queensland and that of Elcho Island, to the north-east of Arnhem Land. This material was gathered during the course of a field-trip made by Wolfgang Laade, Professor of Ethnomusicology at the University of Zurich, sponsored by the Australian Institute of Aboriginal Studies. The documents include both ceremonial and secular music, and of particular interest are the examples using the didieridu, the most characteristic instrument of the original culture of Australia.
