Walter Becker & Donald Fagen - You Gotta Walk It Like You Talk It [OST] (1970)

You Gotta Walk It Like You Talk It (Or You'll Lose That Beat) is an eight-track, 31-and-a-half-minute soundtrack to a low-budget 1970 film that features an embryonic version of Steely Dan: Donald Fagen on keyboards, Walter Becker on bass and guitar, and Denny Dias on guitar and percussion, plus John Discepolo on drums. There are only four actual songs, plus three instrumentals and a reprise of the title track. Yet the playing is suggestive of the sinuous sound that Becker and Fagen would cook up a couple of years hence in the Dan. Nevertheless, it should be sought out by hardcore fans only; there are no gems here, only some baubles. (source)

Steely Dan were a '70's band that acquired a strong following and kept it long after they vanished from sight. Steely Dan mainly consisted of the duo of Walter Becker and Donald Fagen, as well as the professional musicians that were hired to assist them in their recordings. Steely Dan were strictly a recording band for most of their existence; they never performed live after 1973 (until their 21st century reunion, that is). The band tended to avoid the usual rock trappings, drawing much of their inspiration from jazz, rhythm and blues, and old-fashioned pop. Their unique approach to these styles made their music distinctive and appealing. The duo split in the early '80's, but reunited for the 2000 album Two Against Nature, which won the Grammy for Album Of The Year and showed that Steely Dan hadn't lost their touch.

Before Steely Dan's official beginning, the duo recorded a soundtrack for a '60's counter-cultural comedy film as Walter Becker and Donald Fagen. The album was titled You Gotta Walk It Like You Talk It Or You'll Lose That Beat (For those who want to split hairs, the film was actually titled You've Got To Walk It Like You Talk It Or You'll Lose That Beat. The film's editor was none other than future horror auteur Wes Craven). The movie was made in 1968 but was unreleased until 1971, which was the album's release year; the album was apparently recorded in 1970. The other musicians on the album were Denny Diaz (guitar and percussion) and John Discepolo (drums). The producer was Kenny Vance, whom the duo met while working with Jay & The Americans.

Fittingly for a soundtrack to a low-budget '60's movie, the album has a loose and improvisational feel. It sounds less like a Steely Dan album than one by Crosby, Stills and Nash with a jazz pianist. The spacey sound elements that are Steely Dan trademarks are nowhere to be found here. None of the tracks are bad, but none are special; it took three instrumentals and two versions of the title song to pad the album to its short 31-minute length. Though it may disappoint most fans, the album is painless and sometimes appealing. It should not be considered an early Steely Dan recording, but it is interesting listening for the curious. (source)

Big Brother & The Holding Co. - Joseph's Coat (1986)

Big Brother and the Holding Company – amerykański zespół rockowy, utworzony w San Francisco w 1965 r. Big Brother and the Holding Company jest najbardziej znany dzięki występującej w nim w latach 1966-1968 Janis Joplin.

Big Brother and the Holding Company stali się stałym zespołem Avalon Ballroom - klubu muzycznego, którego właścicielem był Chet Helms. Grali wtedy progresywnego, instrumentalnego rocka. Janis przyjechała do San Francisco i dołączyła do zespołu w czerwcu 1966 r.

Można by powiedzieć, że ani ona nie zachwyciła nas, ani my jej - obie strony odniosły podobne wrażenie.

Pierwszymi singlami były "Blindman" i "All is Loneliness". Pozostałe single to: "Down On Me" - "Call On Me" oraz "Coo - Coo" - "Last Time".

Dlatego zrezygnowano z projektu live i zdecydowano się na nagranie materiału studyjnego ("Down On Me" oraz "Piece Of My Heart" nagrane w Grande Ballroom zostały potem włączone do solowej płyty Janis - In Concert, wydanej w 1972 r.). Jednak kłopotliwe okazało się zaadoptowanie nieokiełznanego brzmienia grupy i nieuporządkowanego trybu życia jej członków do warunków studyjnych; postęp zachodził powoli, a presja Grossmana, Columbii i prasy wzrastała.

Uczestniczyli też w nagrywaniu płyty Here We Go Again tego zespołu. Dave i Peter opuścili Country Joe w maju 1969 r., z myślą o reaktywacji Big Brother and the Holding Company z gitarzystą Davidem Nelsonem. Przesłuchali kilkoro potencjalnych wokalistów, jednak w końcu zespół został reaktywowany w 1969 r. w prawie tym samym składzie, co oryginalny (oprócz Janis): Albin, Andrew, Getz i Gurley, a oprócz nich Nick Gravenites (wokal), Dave Schallock (gitara) i Kathi McDonald (wokal). Płyta Be A Brother została wydana w 1970 r. Ostatni album studyjny zespołu, How Hard It Is został nagrany w 1971 r. Skład jest podobny: Sam, Kathi i Nick śpiewają, gra też z nimi Mike Finegan. Zespół grał w takim składzie do 1972 r., jednak narkotyki, utrata managera, brak występów i wewnętrzne konflikty doprowadziły do rozpadu grupy. W ciągu następnych 15 lat zespół raz zagrał ponownie razem – był to koncert ‘The Tribal Stomp' w 1978 r. w Greek Theatre w Berkeley.

Big Brother & The Holding Company is certainly a mainstay in the realm of Classic Rock - no question. In the late sixties I was a huge fan once I heard "Cheap Thrills". And then I investigated the remainder of the catalog only to find that Janis was not always in the band. What I also found out was that the band without Janis and with other front vocalists like Kathi McDonald was even more interesting - my opinion, obviously.

Janis was amazing. No one doubts that. But for me, she was just a bit over the top and sometimes it was more about her than the band - or even the song. When you listen to tracks below where Kathi McDonald was in the band, you hear the song, your hear the band - and it's mighty pleasing!

Joseph's Coat - Originally released on vinyl in 1970/71, this album is a compilation of tracks from Be a Brother and How Hard It Is with the "A" side produced by Nick Gravenites (source)

VA - Australia: Songs of the Aborigines and Music of Papua, New Guinea (1993)

Two distinct musical cultures of the Australian Aborigines are documented in this recording: that of the Cape York peninsula in north Queensland and that of Elcho Island, to the north-east of Arnhem Land. This material was gathered during the course of a field-trip made by Wolfgang Laade, Professor of Ethnomusicology at the University of Zurich, sponsored by the Australian Institute of Aboriginal Studies. The documents include both ceremonial and secular music, and of particular interest are the examples using the didieridu, the most characteristic instrument of the original culture of Australia.

Horny Trees - Branches of Dirty Delight (2009)

Grał i współpracował z: Trapezfik, Słoma i Bębnoluby, Batyskaf, Marek Biliński, Mamadu Diouf, Anna Patynek, Beckaye Aw, K.a.s.a, Drums NRG, Muzykoterapia, Mafrik, Makossa, Kerd.

(kilogram)

This record made a great impact on me and I would like to recommend it wholeheartedly: it's original, avantgarde but simultaneously accessible and easy-to-listen. How is it possible? Perhaps a reason is that this trio unites talents of t(h)ree players of very different jazz background who nonetheless managed to harmonize their styles and produce common and very interesting sound.

Hubert Zelmer (drums) has graduated from legendary Warsaw Music Academy and since then played in both classical and jazz music projects. Although young he excelled in many mainstream jazz recordings like in projects with Wojtek Staroniewicz, Zbigniew Namysłowski or Adam Pierończyk. Paweł Szamburski (clarinet) on other hand is one of the leaders of Polish avantgarde scene and member of such fantastic bands as Tupika, Cukunft or SzaZa cooperating with such important artists as Raphael Rogiński, Tomasz Duda or Mikołaj Trzaska. As for Maciej Trifonidis Bielawski (bass guitar and wind instruments) I believe he is self-taught but his ambition and talent are exceptional. He saturates music with pure madness showing that people who come from world outside of musical schools have a lot to offer to jazz.

Speaking shortly, it is great that these young but very talented lads decided to work together disregarding all differences in their careers and music genres they played so far. The result is magnificent indeed! As with all the best contemporary jazz it is eclectic music uniting such different influences as free improv, klezmer, chamber, rock, electro-accoustic and even rave or trance. But in the end instead of chaos we got coherent and original music showing how attractive (if executed so well as here) may be such a synthetic attitude (polish-jazz)

VA - From the Kitchen Archives No. 3: Amplified: New Music Meets Rock, 1981-1986

From the Kitchen Archives Vol. 3. Amplified: New Music Meets Rock, 1981-1986 is the third release in a series of CDs compiled from The Kitchen's archive that documents historic concert recordings at The Kitchen from the early 1970s to the mid-1980s. While the first two releases, New Music, New York 1979 and Steve Reich and Musicians, Live 1977 focused on major figures of new and experimental music from The Kitchen's first decade, Amplified moves into the early 1980s, representing a vocabulary that emerged from the avant-garde, minimalist, and No New York scenes in the 1960s and 1970s in New York City. Highlights from the CD include the layered guitars of Rhys Chatham's works, classical cello played through electronic effects pedals by Arthur Russell, a Christian Marclay piece created with multiple turntables 'prepared' with his 'To and Fro-nograph,' one of the earliest Sonic Youth concert recordings, two tracks by Swans and a rarely performed large orchestral piece by Elliott Sharp. Even now, more than twenty years after these shows took place, these recordings capture an explosive energy that still feels vibrant and vital. (soundohm)

Arrington de Dionyso & Thollem McDonas - Intuition, Science, And Sex (2008)

Intuition Science And Sex is a free trio album meditation on one mode with two musicians and drone machines. On September 11th, 2007 Arrington deDionyso (Bass Clarinet) and Thollem McDonas (Rickety Old Beat-Up Piano) met in an industrial area of Portland with a simple question and complicated answers. Simplicity and complexity in their respective perfections, each idea developed over long spans of time. The result is a very different kind of album for both of these two prolific musicians. VA - The Dartmouth Digital Synthesizer (1976)

The music on this recording was produced on a new kind of synthesizer developed at the Thayer School of Engineering at Dartmouth College. In 1972 composer Jon Appleton began working with two engineers, Sydney Alonso and Cameron Jones, to develop a computer-controlled synthesizer. Significant work had already been done on digital synthesis, but it was felt by the inventors at Dartmouth that an inexpensive, totally dedicated system could help many composers explore this new way of producing sound. The inventors also wanted to create a users language which did not require computer expertise as had previous computer music programs.

Why use a digital synthesizer instead of a Moog or other analog synthesizer? The answer is in the ability to create, by digital means alone, time-variant timbres which make all natural sounds interesting to our ears. The "steady state" timbres produced by analog oscillators are one of the most serious musical limitations of conventional synthesizers. The works presented on this recording have significantly different styles but they have in common the exploration of changing timbre values. These pieces were all composed in 1975 and are the first four compositions produced on the Dartmouth Digital Synthesizer.

Jon Appleton, Sydney Alonso, Cameron Jones, Inventors of the Dartmouth Digital Synthesizer

Georganna's Farewell has a conventional formal structure with a large, chordal gesture separating episodes in which similar pitch material is developed. The composer calls it the "stylistic analog of an earlier work, Georganna's Fancy (1965), which used conventional tape studio techniques." Appleton was born in Los Angeles, California in 1939 and in 1967 founded the Bregman Electronic Music Studio at Dartmouth College. He worked there until 1976 when he became the Director of the Elektronmusikstudion in Stockholm, Sweden. Some of his earlier electronic music is available on the recording The World Music Theatre of Jon Appleton.

Lars-Gunnar Bodin

Bilder (Images) by Lars-Gunnar Bodin is a spare but haunting work. It is in three sections, each exploring different tonal resources of the Dartmouth Digital Synthesizer. Bodin is Sweden's leading composer of electronic music and is Director of the Electronic Music Studio at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Stockholm. Born in that city in 1935, Bodin is known for his large scale works, often involving other media as well as music. In 1974 he visited Dartmouth College for a month where he studied the language of the new synthesizer and ultimately composed the work heard here.

Russel Pinkston

Emergence by Russell Pinkston is so titled to suggest the emergence of traditional tonality from an otherwise unfamiliar sonic setting. The composer also intends to communicate the sense of an emergency, especially in the first section of the work. Pinkston was born in Beirut, Lebanon in 1949 and was raised in Brooklyn, New York. In 1968 he came to Dartmouth College briefly only to leave as composer, arranger and guitarist for the rock group Tracks. In 1975 he returned to Dartmouth to finish his studies and first began to work with electronic music. He is presently living in New York City.

Tapestry JE by William Brunson is perhaps more "traditionally electronic" in its use of gesture and and timbre. Brunson has composed instrumental music as well as text-sound compositions and this work shows his continuing concern for layered construction. Brunson was born in Dallas, Texas in 1953 and graduated from Dartmouth College in 197 5. He is presently working in the electronic music studio at Fylkingen in Sweden.

Gwinciński / Richter / Skolik - Jupiter, Urizen, Wernyhora, Trungpa (1998)

Tomasz Gwinciński (ur. 15 stycznia 1963 w Bydgoszczy) – polski muzyk: gitarzysta, perkusista, kompozytor filmowy i teatralny; scenarzysta i reżyser filmowy. Lider grup Henryk Brodaty, Trytony, Maestro Trytony, NonLinear Ensamble i in. Współtworzył tzw. scenę yassową m.in. z Tymonem Tymańskim, Jerzym Mazzollem i Mikołajem Trzaską.

Artur Skolik - Perkusista jazzowy, kompozytor. Na stałe współpracuje z zespołem Graal, trębacza Ziuta Gralaka. Nagrał z nim 4 płyty: „Graal 1”, „Graal 2”, „Truskawki”, „Graal – muzyka do filmu Łukasza Wylężałka „Darmozjad polski”. Prowadzi swój własny zespół Checkmate, z którym zrealizował 2 płyty „Checkmate” i „Mirror Gambit” Przez kilka lat był perkusistą Stanisława Soyki z którym nagrał 2 płyty „Nr. 17” i „Live Pstrąg Zakopane”. Koncertuje z Joachimem Menclem w zespołach: jmTrio i Mencel, Logan, Skolik, Jerzym Milianem w zespole „Sticks Quintet”. Grał z Maciejem Sikałą, Piotrem Wojtasikiem, Tomaszem Szukalskim, Mietkiem Szcześniakiem, Lorą Szafran i wieloma innymi.

Loco jest z pochodzenia Niemcem. W swoim muzycznym życiu grał bluesa, jazz i rocka. (lastfm)

This is an amazing album, which is now available for download on several sites. It's a kind of guitar jazz instrumental music, reminiscent of Pink Floyd in the early post-Barrett period, with long, spacious and rhythmic relatively simple structures full of intrinsic tension and high quality instrumental touches and sounds, creating an eery, gloomy, hypnotic atmosphere. Jazz would not be a correct qualifier, but neither are rock nor fusion. The overall result is highly unusual, compelling and entrancing. With Tomasz Gwinciński on guitar and banjo, Loco Richter on bass guitar and B-3 organ, Arkadiusz Skolik on drums, xylophone, and with on some tracks Renata Suchodolska on cello and Tomasz Mucha on violin. This music is not about instrumental prowess, or clever harmonic development, rhythmic subtleties, or even about melody : it's all about atmosphere and mood, created over long repetitive rhythms, building a gloomy, sometimes melancholy tension with instrumental accents and shadings. Throughout the album the musicians keep their creative and unique approach to music, even if all tracks are different and by themselves of interest. Hypnotic and entrancing - I find no other words for it. (freejazzblog)

Ex Orkest - Een rondje Holland (2001)

Magiczne, szorstkie, ekspresyjne, hipnotyczne pieśni kultowej formacji awangardy punkowo-rockowej The Ex napisane do tekstów Jana Mulder wykonane na specjalnym koncercie na Holland Festival 2000 z udziałem małej orkiestry symfoniczno-jazzowej. Nagrania zarejestrowano 8, 10 i 11 czerwca 2000 roku. (ars2)

Rock bands and orchestras -- here's a worrisome cliché usually signaling the beginning of the end for a group of musicians getting too full of themselves or already on the nostalgia bandwagon. Of course, none of that applies here, for two main reasons. The first one is the Ex -- not your run-of-the-mill punk band, this Dutch institution has always been keen on collaborating with wide-ranging artists. The second reason is the orchestra convened here: 20 of Amsterdam's finest and most daring experimental musicians, from Palinckx's singer Han Buhrs to members of the ICP Orchestra (and of course all then-current members of the Ex, including Luc Ex). This ambitious -- but not over the top ambitious -- project came to life at the request of the Holland Festival in 2000. Recorded live in Holland, Belgium, and Germany over four consecutive nights, Een Rondje Holland ("A Dutch Trip") features 12 pieces that share affinities with the Ex's regular repertoire while moving much deeper into experimentation. Half of the tracks are genuine rock songs intelligently arranged, using the orchestra in unorthodox ways, exploiting the possibilities offered, for instance, by the presence of three drums, three bassists, and five singers (the Ex's G.W. Sok and Katrin, plus Han Buhrs, Jan Mulder, and Braaxtaal's Jaap Blonk). The other half consist of instrumental pieces, more or less improvised, erasing the distinction between rock band and orchestra. Highlights are numerous and range from the more "typical" songs "Kokend Asfalt" and "My Happiness" to an interpretation of Alexander Mossolov's "Symfonie Voor Machines." Obviously, Een Rondje Holland is not for every Ex fan, but those fond of the group's previous collaborations with Buhrs, Han Bennink, or Tom Cora will probably find it at least interesting. On the other hand, followers of the Dutch avant-garde scene who are usually put off by the Ex's punk rock but enjoy the ICP Orchestra, Splinks, or even Palinckx should definitely give this album a try. (François Couture)

Terry Fox - Berlino / Rallentando (1988)

Terry Fox (1943 – October 14, 2008) was an American video, conceptual, sound, and performance artist.

Fox was born in Seattle, Washington. At the age of seventeen, he was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease, later referencing the cycles of illness and wellness in several artworks. Fox was an important figure in post-minimal sculpture, conceptual art, performance, and video art on the West Coast. Before permanently moving to Europe, he was based in San Francisco in the late 1960s and 1970s. Fox later moved to Liege, Belgium. Patife Band - Corredor polonês (1987)

Patife Band is a project by the musician/composer Paulo Barnabé, that started in São Paulo, Brazil, in 1985, when they recorded their 1st EP. Initilly founded as “Paulo Patife Band”, had its name reduced to “Patife Band”, and recording their 2nd album, named “Corredor Polonês” (WEA/1987) Paulo Barnabé is influenced by classical composition techniques leading to assymetrical rythms, atonal cells, dodecaphonic “harmonies”. Also there´s confessed punk-rock, jazz and brazilian rhythms influences, that makes the “joke” even more spicy! Only in 2003 they came back for a concert in the demo-sul festival, Londrina/PR/Brazil with the formation: Paulo Barnabé - vox, Emerson Vilanni - guitars, Eduardo Batistella - drums, Mauricio Biazzi - bass. Kiruna - Irun (2003)

Kiruna is a Norwegian trio consisting of Kare Chr. Vestrheim (Rhodes, organ), Erland Dahlen (drums, percussion) and Thomas Tofte (bass, micromoog).

In 2003 these three accomplished musicians met up in a barn deep in the woods near Sarpsborg, and recorded a vast amount of free improvisational material. They decided to isse the best parts as an album, named Iruna.

Their particular brand of improvisational music; with references to artists as diverse as Black Sabbath, Miles Davis, John Cage and Stockhausen; was and still is hard to categorize; but the innovative approach saw to it that they were noticed after this initial production.

Four years would go before a sophomore effort saw the light of day. The three musicians were kept busy with other projects after 2003, but managed to take the time to hook up in recording studios from time to time; and when it was time to put together a new album they had lots of material to choose from; this time around also with the participation of guest musicians like Rolf Yngve Uggen (Gluecifer), Hallvard Wennersberg Hagen and Jens Petter Nilsen (Xploding Plastix).

The end result was issued as Tarasarus in 2007; a diverse production covering a plethora of rather different musical directions, more or less within the same musical framework as their debut album. (progarchives)

Arhythmic Brain - From the Beginning to the End (2003)

Trio powstało jako jedna z wariacji podstawowego składu Arhythmic Perfection, prezentuje jednak bardziej radykalne i bezkompromisowe podejście do rytmu, melodii i harmonii

The trio was created as one of the basic make-up of Arhythmic Perfection. However, it shows a more radical and uncompromising approach towards the rhythm, melody and harmony. The band performs new music penetrating not explored yet areas of arhythmia, so its pulse and melodics cannot be compared to styles known so far. basing on starting and unique Mazzoll's compositions and scales, the band explores depths of experiments, but also sometimes reaches the edge of embarrasment, creating not known yet amalgam of musical visions and shades. The music of Arhythmic Brain fluctuates somwhere between free and contemporary classical chambEr music, between vanguard performance and total improvisation. (mozg)

Oren Ambarchi - Sagittarian Domain (2012)

For anyone who still associates Oren Ambarchi exclusively with the clipped, bass-heavy tones of solo electric guitar works such as Suspension, this rhythmically churning one-man-band monster of an album-length piece might seem to come out of nowhere. However, listeners who have followed the breadth of his work for the last few years (solo and in projects with collaborators from Jim O’Rourke to Stephen O’Malley and Keith Rowe to Keiji Haino) will have noted how Ambarchi has allowed increasingly clear traces of his enthusiasms as a music listener (for classic rock, minimal techno and 70’s fusion, among other areas) to surface in his performances and recordings, all the time filtering them through his signature long-form structures and psychoacoustic sonics.

Recorded in a single inspired studio session, Sagittarian Domain displaces Ambarchi’s trademark guitar sound from the centre of the mix, its presence felt only as an occasional ghostly reverberated shimmer. Endlessly pulsating guitar and bass lines sit alongside electronic percussion and thundering motorik drumming (familiar from his work with Keiji Haino) at the core of the piece, locking into a voodoo groove like Faust covering a 70’s cop show theme. The work is founded on hypnotic almost-repetition, the accents of the drum hits and interlocking bass and guitar lines shifting almost imperceptibly back and forwards over the beat as they undergo gradual transformations of timbre. Cut-up and phase-shifted strings enter around the half-way mark like an abstracted memory of the eastern-tinged fusion of the Mahavishnu Orchestra’s classic Visions of the Emerald Beyond, before returning for an extended, stark yet affecting come-down coda, equal parts Gavin Bryars and Purple Rain.

While Sagittarian Domain contains traces of a diversity of influences, it mines all of them to uncover something that is clearly an extension of Ambarchi’s own investigations up to this point, exhibiting the same care for micro-detail and surrender to the physicality of sound that are present in all of his work, extending them in new ways to repetition, pulse and rhythm. Niski Szum - Siedem Pieśni Miejskich (2013)

W kwietniu 2013 ukazała się nowa płyta projektu niski szum "Siedem pieśni miejskich". Tym razem płyta została nagrana w duecie z Olgą Hanowską (skrzypce barytonowe).

"Siedem pieśni miejskich" to spotkanie gitary, dronowych, folkowych brzmień oraz muzyki miasta. Dzięki odwołaniu się do dźwiękowych efektów pracy niemieckich artystów Urban Audio powstała wyjątkowa, hipnotyczna płyta, nasycona bogactwem brzmienia. Projekt nie jest wyrazem fascynacji industrialnym aspektem miasta a raczej to kontynuacja poszukiwań z płyty "Songs from the woods". "Siedem pieśni miejskich" to przeniesienie punktu ciężkości na tajemnicę i poetyckość przestrzeni miasta. Wydawcą jest krakowska oficyna Mathka Rec (sublabel Audio Tong). (serpent)

Niski Szum is a new project of Marcin Dymiter, famous for solo recordings (as Emiter) and bands: Ewa Braun, Mordy or Mapa.

In April 2013 released a new record Niski Szum project "Siedem pieśni miejskich". This time the album was recorded as a duet with Olga Hanowska (baritone violin).

The Keith Tippett Group - Dedicated to You, But You Weren't Listening (1971)

(rockjazz)

Pianist, composer, arranger, and bandleader Keith Tippett's first album, You Are Here...I Am There, was issued in 1969, and received some notice as the work of an ambitious composer looking for a voice. Apparently, by the time he recorded Dedicated to You, But You Weren't Listening, which was released in 1971, he'd found it in spades. Tippett has become one of the great lights of the British free jazz movement, and for more than 30 years he has led groups of improvising musicians, from two to 40 in number, on some of the most exploratory and revelatory harmonic adventures in musical history -- whether those in America know it or not. The band here is comprised of 11 pieces, including Elton Dean, Robert Wyatt, Nick Evans, Roy Babbington, Gary Boyle, Neville Whitehead, and others. The commitment to jazz here is total, as Tippett grafts the dynamic sensibilities of George Russell, the textural and chromatic palettes of Gil Evans, and the sheer force of Oliver Nelson onto his own palette. The interplay between soloists and ensembles is dazzling -- check "Thoughts for Geoff," with blazing solos by Nick Evans, cornetist Marc Charig, and Tippett himself in a series of angular arpeggios interspersed with chordal elocution. Wyatt's drumming, which opens the record with a bang on "This Is What Happens," is easily the most inspired of his career on record. The nod to Mingus on "Green and Orange Night Park" is more than formal; it's an engagement with some of the same melodic constructs Mingus was working out in New Tijuana Moods. In sum, this is an adventurous kind of jazz that still swings very hard despite its dissonance and regards a written chart as something more than a constraint to creative expression. Brilliant. The CD reissue by Disconforme is fantastic in sound and in package. (allmusic)
