VA- Vintage Sex Songs (2008) 2CD

In 2008 Proper/Primo released a 40-track anthology of Vintage Sex Songs recorded during the 1920s, '30s, '40s, and early '50s. This collection's immediate predecessors were two 18-track compilations (Sugar in My Bowl and Ride Daddy Ride) presented by Buzzola Records in 2004, and unfortunately the 2004 and 2008 releases have numerous titles in common. Each of these albums presents a varied mixture of classic blues, piano blues, hokum, early modern urban blues, and rhythm & blues, and may provide ideal background music for casual partying and intimate misbehavior. Titles like "I've Got Ford Movements in My Hips," "I Want Plenty Grease in My Frying Pan," and Bessie Smith's ode to horniness "I Need a Little Sugar in My Bowl" mingle nicely with various not-so-subtle songs about things that one sits upon, different kinds of holes, things that go into holes, and how they fit. Three consecutive "Let Me" songs epitomize the attitudes of men possessed by sexual cravings, at least two different singers extol the feats of "jockeys," and a cluster of food tunes reference more than one brand of hunger. The most outrageous numbers include Bull Moose Jackson's "I Want a Bow-Legged Woman" and Lucille Bogan's explicitly pornographic "Shave `Em Dry," a breathtakingly lewd performance that you will never hear broadcast over the radio. This collection's lineup is exceptionally varied, and with material drawn from four different decades, perceptive listeners can learn a lot while being entertained. ~ arwulf arwulf
